Let me take you back to the 21st minute of a Champions League play-off in Linz.

LASK had gone to Glasgow a week earlier and lost three-nil.

Now, at home, Callum McGregor had just scored for Celtic.

Nil-one on the night.

Nil-four on aggregate.

LASK needed four goals just to take the game to extra time.

Five to win it.

At that moment, our best reconstruction puts their chance of reaching the Champions League at around 0.6 percent.

And it is in that 0.6 percent that we go to work.

In that 0.6 percent is a boy from Upper Austria who joined this club when he was ten years old.

Who came through its academy, level by level, until the boy behind the goal became the man standing in it.

In that 0.6 percent is a player who had already travelled through Vienna, Graz, Dresden, Innsbruck and Hartberg before arriving in Linz.

Who stayed.

Who became the longest-serving player in this squad.

Who became its captain.

And who, four goals down, kept asking for the ball.

In that 0.6 percent is a young man who came from Nigeria to Europe to chase a career in football.

Who lost months of that career to a cruciate-ligament injury.

Who fought his way back.

Who injured the same knee again.

Who fought his way back again.

And who, eleven minutes after Celtic made it four-nil on aggregate, scored the goal that started everything.

In that 0.6 percent is a Panamanian defender who tore his ACL playing for his country.

Who spent nine months away from competitive football.

Who returned.

And whose first competitive game back for LASK ended with his name on the scoresheet.

Andrés Andrade.

In that 0.6 percent is a Brazilian centre-back who came to Linz on loan.

Who earned his place.

Who earned the right to stay.

And who, with LASK one goal from elimination in the final moments of the ninety minutes, rose to a ball in the Celtic penalty area and helped create the goal that gave them thirty minutes more.

João Tornich.

And in that 0.6 percent is a striker from Houston whose road to Linz took him through England, Portugal, Spain and Germany; through Seattle, San Antonio, St. Louis and Philadelphia.

A player who has spoken about moments when he wondered whether to keep playing football at all.

Samuel Adeniran kept playing.

And on this night, he scored once to make the impossible imaginable.

Then, in the 109th minute, he scored again to make it real.

Five-one.

Five-four on aggregate.

LASK were going to the Champions League.

They had taken forty shots.

They had scored five unanswered goals.

And they had done it after reaching a point where, by our reconstruction, their chance of qualification was around 0.6 percent.

But perhaps that number tells us something.

Because football gives us numbers for everything.

Possession.

Shots.

Goals.

Tables.

Odds.

Probabilities.

And sometimes a number tells you what is likely to happen.

It does not tell you what has to happen.

LASK did not reach the Champions League because the odds were in their favour.

They reached it because, for seventy minutes, they played inside the tiny piece of possibility that was left to them.

A goalkeeper who grew up at this club.

A captain who found a home here.

Two men who taught injured knees how to play football again.

A Brazilian who came on loan and earned the right to stay.

A striker whose journey could have ended in half a dozen places before it ever reached Linz.

And thousands of people in a stadium who watched the scoreboard say that this was over—

and stayed anyway.

So remember that number.

0.6 percent.

Because sometimes 99.4 percent of the world can tell you what is going to happen.

And all you need is the part that says it still might not.

It is in that 0.6 percent that we go to work.

PS: total vergessen MOT zu wählen, wobei einzelne Spieler sollte man an so einen Abend eh nicht hervorheben

Denke wir müssen wirklich unsere 3 Innenverteidiger hervorheben, obwohl wir 5 Buden geschossen haben. 

Was Andrade, Tornich und Mbuyamba hier für eine Leistung gezeigt haben, und wie abgebrüht und clever die das gemacht haben (denke der Schiri hat auch gut laufen lassen meistens) war echt grandios

Dazu noch zwei Stangenschüsse und ein vergebener Elfer. Das hätte noch viel bitterer für die Schotten enden können

Überglücklich. In der Nacht noch @blauweiss78in der Krochledanen getroffen, die er seit dem Frühshoppen am Wochenende beim Schlager gegen Voitsberg nimmer ausgezogen hat. "Es sads de Numma 1 in Linz, oba mia hom de bessane Musi" säuselte er mir mostgeschwängert ins Ohr und sabberte mir etwas auf die Sherman-Jacke. Eine faire Geste.
