Also das hab ich mir nie gedacht und ich muss eingestehen ich bin beim 2:0 schlafen gegangen (ärger,ärger) weil ich mir gedacht hab: "Jetzt ist es wohl gelaufen".

4 Manschaften in der Euro- League -ich korrigiere: in der Austro-League, das gabs ja noch nie.

Und von allen vieren hat wohl Rapid die besten Chancen auf das 1/8-Finale.

Goodnight Vienna. Or rather goodnight Villa. Martin O’Neill’s side crashed out of the Europa League last night, a sucker punch of an away goal settling this play-off tie just as they had appeared to turn round a first leg deficit.

It may not have the cache of the Champions League but it is the kind of exit that damages ambition, halts momentum. No European football this season. It’s a statement with a bitter after taste. Villa were expected to make short work of Rapid whose supporters, keeping up a wall of noise throughout, style themselves the Taxi Boys. But the cabs were for Villa who will rue Ashley Young’s first-half penalty miss and the failure to award another in injury-tme. For Villa there was understandable anxiety. After all they had conceded in just 16 seconds on the first leg and on Thursday night a series of free-kicks were ceded.

From one Steffen Hofmann, Rapid’s captain, curled a dangerous right-footed shot that had Brad Guzan scrambling. Earlier and James Milner had collected a flick-on by John Carew, restored to fitness and restored to the starting line-up, but his cross was, just, too far ahead of the onrushing Emile Heskey.

On the half-hour Ashley Young had the opportunity to calm matters. After deft work from Fabian Delph, Young ran in from the left wing, was met with an attempted forearm smash by Andreas Dober – who ridiculously, and not for the last time, threw himself to the turf, rightly earning a caution – and slalomed into the area.

Markus Heikkinen caught his foot but Young’s penalty lacked conviction and was blocked by goalkeeper Helge Payer. What a chance.

But, astonishingly, there was, seven minutes later, a carbon-copy of the move with Delph, neat in possession, again spraying the ball to the wing.

This time, it was the hapless Dober – more a Dobbin – who caught Young as he again charged into the area. Milner took over penalty duties and he side-footed high into the net. The tie was now level.

Rapid grew angry. Challenges flew in and they took the fight to Villa. On 47 minutes they almost drew level. A quick break and Curtis Davies deflected a cross out – only to Hoffman whose shot by-passed Guzan but was headed off the line by Cuellar. It was edgy stuff.

A back-heel by Carew almost settled the nerves only for the ball to drift wide before the Norwegian, collecting Milner’s pass, broke away, cut inside Ragnvald Soma, and neatly beat Payer with a low shot inside the near post.

Not that Rapid were beaten. They pushed on knowing that a goal would change the landscape and should have achieved that when Guzan parried Stefan Maierhofer’s over-head kick. The ball fell to Nikica Jelavic who, inexplicably, poked it wide. But he soon redeemed himself. Again Guzan blocked, this time from Markus Katzer, it fell to Jelavic who turned and struck his shot. The killer blow.

Earlier and Milner had hit the side-netting after Payer had pushed out Young’s cross-shot while the goalkeeper tipped over a drive from Delph. But Rapid, too, remained dangerous and, somehow, Hofmann blasted over from seven yards with the goal beckoning.

Es ist doch immer wieder herrlich wie die Briten schreiben Dobber als Dobbin (Zug- oder Arbeitspferd) oder Jelavic als the Killer zu bezeichnen - hat defenitiv was.

Ich kanns noch immer nicht fassen, nachn 2 Tor hab ich ma dacht, ui, jetzt müssen unsere Burschen noch mehr reinbeissen, was sie auch dann gemacht haben. Jela hat sich sein Geburtstagsgeschenk selbst gemacht Payer war 1ste Sahne Maierhofer hat mit seiner Einwechslung nochmals Schwung in die Partie gebracht, er war richtig motiviert, eh klar
