In an exclusive interview with fcbarcelona.com, Frank Rijkaard analyses his new squad and gives us his views on the opening match of the season.

How do you assess last Sunday's game against Racing Santander?

We met our objective. We usually have a lot of trouble there but we went for a win. We can say we deserved it.

Can we start talking about a battle between Barca and Real Madrid for the league title?

No. There are other teams in La Liga and every game is decided out there on the pitch. The main thing is for the team to keep on working hard and pile on the maximum number of points possible. Obviously the derbies between Barca and Real Madrid are surrounded by a special excitement but at the end of the day theyre just two more league games.

So do you think there's no clear favourite for the league title?

I never talk about favourites because I think you have to have the maximum respect for your opponent. History shows that, sometimes, the big teams drop points against teams that are theoretically weaker. Our obligation is to be always focussed against any team.

Can you analyse each part of the team for us?

- Home grown talent in goal: I'm in favour of this concept. I think that a goalkeeper who comes up through the ranks knows the Club well. This means that you must have a very strong team of coaches that is able to give the young players a chance. In our case, I believe we're on the right track; we've got a man like Juan Carlos Unzué, who's very experienced and who works exclusively with the goalkeepers. Valdés is doing very well. He's young, hardworking and is really committed to the Club. In addition he's full of courage and bravery. I'm very pleased with his performances. As for Jorquera, he's already demonstrated that he can come on at any moment and do a good job. Rubén is younger and also very safe.

- A solid defence with attacking skills: That's normal because the philosophy of Barca is to play well and win. We have a great team for attacking and that's what we have to do. We have a group of players who can defend and at the same time lend support when we attack.

- A creative midfield: That's right. This season we undoubtedly have a midfield made up of a group of really creative players. Each player has his role on the pitch but he has to be able to think of the collective.

- A strike force that guarantees goals: We've got one. There are various options in attack and that's very positive.

What differences would you highlight between this season's and last season's squads?

The current squad can't be compared to the one last season. There are a lot of players who have left and were very important for the team and for the Club. But right now we're working with some different players and it's important that the players have been able to form a group, a unit, during the pre-season, and that this shows out on the pitch. That's very important and we have to congratulate the players on that. It's fundamental in a team because you can have very good players in your team but if they don't get on it doesn't work. It's a question of attitude, intelligence and knowing how to help your team-mates.

How do you asses the Eto'o-Larsson duo?

Very good. I think that Larsson showed in the pre-season that he's a very useful and intelligent placer and every time he plays he gives 100%. As for Eto'o, he's a highly talented, elegant player. He can create some attractive moves, and also works hard. He's got a winning attitude and good team spirit.

What does Iniesta bring to the team?

There are times when you need someone on the pitch with the creativity, intelligence and style of play that Iniesta has to open up the game. He's a great player and a great person.

The difference from last year is that the team plays well even without Ronaldinho, as we saw on Sunday

In my opinion, Ronaldinho was the number one last year and still is. I always prefer to play the games with Ronaldinho rather than without him because we must never forget the work he did last year. I believe that 'Ronnie' is the barometer of the squad. When he's happy and plays there's no other player like him who can transmit this to the team and the fans. He's a jewel in the world of football. I always prefer to talk about the team, which is stronger with Ronaldinho.

After Sunday's match, how do you see the five new players?

Giuly is another example of a player who takes responsibility and is intelligent. He's always looking for a chance to do something special but when that's not possible he's got the intelligence to keep the ball and play for the team. And he scores goals. Belletti did very well and told me he was fine on the left. As for Deco I would highlight his attitude, his reading of the game and his team spirit on the pitch, always talking to his team-mates. He's a winner.

Before Sunday, you said it was very important to win the first league match. That's been done so what comes next?

Winning the second. We have our objectives but it's Barca's obligation to play to win in every match. We have to do everything possible not to lose and we've got the squad to do that. A squad of 21 players gives the youngsters from the ranks a chance That's Txiki's and my intention. To create a competitive squad and have a good relationship with the youth teams to give them a chance when we're missing a player.

What about Saviola? Will we see him again next season?

A player like Saviola has to play all the time and going to Monaco is a good solution. With his talent it's very possible he'll return to Barca.

Ich finde es schade, dass Saviola jetzt bei denn Monegassen ist.

Denn für mich ist Javier Pedro Saviola mindestens 2 Klassen besser als Eto'o .

Ich glaube mit Larsson, Saviola und Guily hätte man 3 spitzen Stürmer gehabt.

Natürlich ist Eto'o auch ein Klasse Stürmer aber trotzdem der schwächste der Stürmer.

Außerdem ist da noch RONALDINHO der ja als HS aufgestellt wird.

Fazit einer der 3 Stürmer muss draußen bleiben.

Kann mir einer die Aufstellung verraten???

Immerhin hat man jetzt Deco, Xavi und RONALDINHO wer spielt da wo und in der Verteidigung???

Und genau das empfinde ich als Frechheit, weil wenn man schon versichert, dass er zurückkkommen wird, dann sollte man in der Zwischenzeit auch gefälligst seine Rückennummer nicht anfassen.

Ich weiß, ist eigentlich nebensächlich, aber das hat den Anschein als würde man Saviola als einen 08/15- Jugendspieler ansehen, der sich nicht durchsetzen konnte und den man halt verleiht, damit er woanders Erfahrung sammelt. Und das ist er einfach nicht, nach all seinen Verdiensten für den Verein.

Ich bin auch deiner Meinung. Larsson hat mal gesagt dass es ihm grundsätzlich egal ist, welche Nummer er bekommt. Und Saviola gegenüber würd ich das nicht machen.

Zum Thema Saviola vs. Eto’o kann man Streiten, aber das Saviola Torgefährlicher ist, ist meiner Meinung nach klar.

Viel zu offensiv deine Aufstellung, da würde jedes Barca Match wo möglich 3:4, 4:4 oder 4:3 ausgehen. Statt Deco/Giuly/Larsson/Eto`o müsste Motta ins Spiel kommen, dann passt es.

Diese Aufstellung hätte dann Showdown.(abgesehen von Edmilson)

Meine Idee wäre, dass Xavi die Wege für Ronaldinho frei macht.

Belletti defensiv spielt und Deco von hinten raus spielt.

statt Eto'o könnte natürlich auch Larsson spielen, entschieden hab ich mich für Eto'o da er jünger ist und genauso torgefährlich. Edmilson eben statt Marquez am Anfang, Marquez halt fünfter Mann für die Verteidung.
