Ferdinand fears unfounded

Filed: Monday, 24th July 2006

Author: Matthew O'Greel

Anton Ferdinand will be fit for the start of the new Premiership campaign, West Ham United have revealed this morning.

Ferdinand suffered a problem with his hamstring during Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Gothenburg and initial fears were that the injury could keep him out of action until September, thereby missing the opening three games of the Premiership campaign.

But the club have revealed that the injury is less severe than intially anticipated and, according to club physio Steve Allen, Ferdinand is likely to return to action within a fortnight.

"Anton is now back at Chadwell Heath undergoing intensive physiotherapy," he told whufc.com. "We are looking forward to seeing him resume full training soon."

na also. wars doch nicht so schlimm.

Chin-Up Robbo!
West Ham United rounded off their pre-season trip to Sweden with a 3-1 victory against Ljungskile SK on Tuesday evening.

Against another physical and well-organised outfit here in Scandinavia, Alan Pardew's men conceded an early goal before stepping up a gear in the second half and turning the game around with goals from Dean Ashton, Bobby Zamora and Yossi Benayoun.

Hammers started the encounter brightly, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring after 15 minutes - in controversial fashion - as what appeared to be a blatant push by Martin Smedberg on John Paintsil wasn't punished - and the Swedish striker controlled before firing an excellent volley past Stephen Bywater from 12 yards out.

Three minutes later, Hammers almost drew level, as a neat move involving Ashton and Mark Noble - captaining the team for the first time - ended with the striker seeing his angled shot cleared for a corner. From the resulting kick, Ashton was handed an even greater opportunity, but unfortunately glanced his free header wide from six yards out.

As the first half wore on, the visitors began to look stronger, and Carlton Cole went close on two occasions, with a snapshot that just cleared the bar and a fierce drive, after chesting down Tyrone Mears's cross, that was well saved.

Hammers couldn't find an equaliser before the interval, but it took just six minutes for the breakthrough to arrive in the second half. Noble released Ashton on the right, and the big striker cut inside before showing his clinical quality with a blistering right-foot drive that flew into the far corner of the net for his second goal in three pre-season games.

Two minutes later, Lee Bowyer almost added an instant second with a near post header that was blocked by the goalkeeper, before Pards continued his early pre-season policy of making wholesale changes midway through the second half, as the manager introduced the likes of Harewood, Zamora, Konchesky, Collins, Fletcher and Benayoun - who played a key part as Hammers took the lead on 66 minutes.

Once again, the move was initially created by Noble, with a clever pass that released Benayoun, who beat his man before cutting the ball back for Zamora to net from close range with a cheeky finish - an effort that also signalled a double tally for him in Sweden.

Just moments later, the third goal and best goal of the night arrived, as Konchesky released young substitute Kyel Reid down the left, and his cross was only half-cleared to the edge of the penalty area, where Benayoun was on hand to curl a superb left-footed effort into the top corner.

Hammers finished the game by seeing out their victory in comfortable fashion, and Pards will have been pleased with the way his team grew stronger in the second half to produce their best display over the course of the three matches here in Sweden.

Hammers: Bywater; Mears (Fletcher 58), Paintsil, Dailly (Collins 58), Clarke (Konchesky 58); Noble (Ephraim 67), Bowyer (Benayoun 58), Mullins (Stokes 78), Etherington (Reid 67); Ashton (Zamora 58), Cole (Harewood 58).

Gillingham v West Ham United 1-2

First half goals from Teddy Sheringham and Hayden Mullins earned Hammers a 2-1 victory over Gillingham in Andy Hessenthaler's Testimonial match on Saturday afternoon.

Following their return from the pre-season tour to Sweden on Wednesday, Alan Pardew's men began their return to action on home soil with another determined performance against the League One battlers, who start their Football League campaign next Saturday.

With Anton Ferdinand, Danny Gabbidon and Christian Dailly all currently sidelined through injury, Pards handed a senior debut to 17-year-old central defender James Tomkins, and the England under-18 youngster gave an impressive display alongside James Collins at the back.

It took Hammers just four minutes to open the scoring, as Lee Bowyer's free-kick from the left was headed against his own post by defender Brent Sancho, and 40-year-old Sheringham showed the quickest reactions on the pitch to stroke the loose ball into the net.

Bowyer himself almost grabbed his first goal in a West Ham shirt with a low left-foot effort that flew just wide, while Bobby Zamora and Marlon Harewood - playing a wide role on the right side of midfield - also had their chances as Hammers dominated the first half.

Just 10 minutes before the break, the second goal arrived, and from an unusual source, as Matty Etherington's inswinging corner from the right dropped in the six-yard box - to be met by the head of Mullins, who made no mistake from close range.

Hessenthaler left the pitch to thunderous applause early in the second half, and the pace of the game began to slow as both sides took the opportunity to make wholesale substitutions.

Sheringham almost made it three on 56 minutes after being set-up with some excellent hold-up play from Zamora, but Gills goalkeeper Matt Baker saved well with his feet.

Substitute Carlton Cole headed just wide with 15 minutes remaining, while Dean Ashton found the net with a speculative instant volley from 35 yards out - only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

The hosts pulled one back with just five minutes remaining, as substitute Andrew Crofts beat Jimmy Walker with a powerful header from Spiller's corner, but Hammers held on for their third victory in four pre-season friendlies so far, and will look forward to another stern test against lower league opposition when they take on Cambridge United on Tuesday evening.

Hammers: Walker; Clarke, Collins (Ngala 83), Tomkins, Konchesky; Harewood (Ephraim 46), Mullins (Noble 46), Bowyer (Stokes 81), Etherington (Reid 88); Sheringham (Ashton 70), Zamora (Cole 70). Unused: Bywater.

Hammers complete Pantsil signing

West Ham United today completed the signing of Ghanaian international John Pantsil from Israeli side Hapoel Tel-Aviv in a deal that could rise to £1million.

The 25-year-old defender has agreed a four-year contract at Upton Park after impressing on a brief trial with Alan Pardew's men, although he will have to wait for international clearance and a work permit before being eligible to play for the Club - an issue that is expected to be resolved shortly.

A versatile defender who starred for Ghana at the World Cup finals in Germany this summer, John is recognised as a right-back but has also featured in central defence and at left back for his country.

He began his career in Ghana at Berekum Arsenal FC before moving to Liberty Professionals. He then headed to Europe for a brief spell with Polish side Widzew Lodz, before joining Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2002, where he won the Israeli title and reached the Israeli Cup final in his first season.

In December 2004, he signed permanently for Hapoel Tel Aviv after completing a short loan move across town from Maccabi.

A member of the Ghana under-21 side that reached the FIFA World Youth Championship final in Argentina in 2001, John soon moved onto senior duty and was selected to play in the 2002 and 2006 African Cup of Nations in Mali & Egypt respectively.

He was also selected for the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece and played all matches at the World Cup finals this summer, when Ghana progressed through the group stages only to be beaten in the second round by Brazil. He now has 25 full international caps to his name.

Recommended to Hammers by his former colleague in the Israeli league, Yossi Benayoun, John becomes Alan Pardew's fifth summer signing following the arrivals of Lee Bowyer, Jonathan Spector, Carlton Cole and Tyrone Mears.

Ferdinand? Tyrone Mears? Pantsil?

Harewood keen to stay at West Ham

Marlon Harewood

Marlon Harewood has insisted he wants to stay at West Ham, despite being linked to Tottenham and Newcastle.

"You take all the speculation as a big compliment but it was Alan Pardew who brought me here and I want to give back what he gave to me," said Harewood.

"It is good to have competition in the squad. I don't see it as a threat. It makes you want to go out and improve."

Striker Harewood, 26, faces competition from Dean Ashton, Bobby Zamora, Carlton Cole and Teddy Sheringham.

West Ham manager Pardew is happy with the competition he has up front and is confident all his forwards will stay at the club.

"All our strikers know that in some games I will pick two of them and in other games it might only be one," said Pardew.

"None of them want to leave and that is the key."

Pardew had previously reacted by speculation over Harewood's future by stating: "I am not surprised to hear clubs want him.

"But Marlon is not for sale. He is on a long contract with us and, like the rest of the squad, is looking forward to the club's European campaign."

Harewood was in impressive form as the Londoners sealed a place in the Uefa Cup next season with their appearance in the FA Cup final.

Pardew added: "He was terrific last season and was our most improved player. His pace, power and strike rate would be an asset to any club.

"The fans love him here and he has become a hero with his many goals, not least of all the winner in our FA Cup semi-final win over Middlesbrough."

Harewood cost West Ham £500,000 when he signed from Nottingham Forest in November 2003.

Aris FC 2-2 West Ham United

In a fairly evenly matched game that was refelected in the 2-2 score line, West Ham United did well to take a share of the spoils with a limited squad to choose from. Strikers Bobby Zamora and Marlon Harewood both scored early in the second-half to give the Hammers the lead, but Aris fought back well to bring the game level.

West Ham's starting eleven was Jimmy Walker in goal, Tyrone Mears returning to right-back, James Collins and young James Tomkins in the centre of defence with Paul Konchesky on the left. The midfield was slightly more unusual with Teddy Sheringham partnering Hayden Mullins in the centre, Mark Noble on the right and Matty Etherington on the left. Bobby Zamora and Marlon Harewood lead the field up front.

The game started slowly for both teams but it was Aris who came to life first when in the 9th minute Belem tried his luck with a long range effort from 30yards but it was caught easily by Jimmy Walker.

A minute later Aris were on the attack again, this time Weisheimer sliced the ball towards goal, the ball beat Jimmy Walker but just went wide of his bottom right hand post.

On 21 minutes Aris had a free-kick which found Costa 20yards out who drove the ball low towards the left corner but Walker got behind it to keep it out.

Eight minutes later and West Ham had their first real chance of the game when Harewood's ball found Zamora on the right who cut the ball aross the goal but no one was there to knock it in.

A minute later and the game's best chance fell to Aris as Weisheimer was clean through and one-on-one with Walker, but the Greek player hesitated and allowed the Hammers 'keeper to block the ball.

The action went straight up the other end of the field as Zamora had a shot on the turn from 18yards out that went just over the bar.

The game really began to pick up pace now as in the 35th minute Nebegleras had a shot from 25yards forcing a good save from Walker down low to his left to tip the ball round the post.

Six minutes later Garcia had a good effort from 20yards out that hit the top of the cross bar.

First-half: Aris FC 0-0 West Ham United

The second-half began with a bang as within a minute West Ham were a goal up. Some good work from Zamora through the middle found Etherington on the left who crossed the ball in for Harewood to poke it in from close range.

Four minutes later and West Ham almost made it two as Zamora caught the ball on the volley and smashed it towards goal, it beat the 'keeper but just went wide.

A minute later and Zamora was involved again as he put Marlon in who drove the ball hard towards goal but the 'keeper did well to get down and save it.

On 58 minutes Aris had their first chance of the second-half as Nebegleras was found unmarked in the box six yards out but skyed the ball over the bar.

West Ham made their first substitution of the night as Kyle Reid replaced Etherington on the left of midfield.

Twenty minutes into the second-half Carlton Cole came on for Mears to partner Zamora up-front as Harewood moved to the right of midfield and Noble shifted to right-back.

A minute later West Ham doubled their lead as Noble's excellent long ball found Bobby in the middle of the park who ran at the 'keeper and coolly slotted the ball past him.

A minute later Aris pulled a goal back as Javito shot from just outside the box beating Walker down low at his right-hand post.

Aris drew level on 72 minutes when a cross into the box found Reyes who side-footed it into the net from 5yards out.

Three minutes later the Greeks almost took the lead when Kiriakos volleyed the ball towards the top right corner but it just went over.

On 76 minutes, Hogan Ephraim came on for Konchesky. Reid moved to left-back as the Hammers switched to a five-man midfield with Cole on the left and Zamora playing the lone striker.

Maragos almost won the match for Aris in injury time with an inswinging shot from just outside the box that looked bound for the top right corner but the ball just whistled over.

Full-time: Aris FC 2-2 West Ham United.

Wichtiger Spieler
PAOK Salonica 2 West Ham United 1

West Ham suffered a second pre-season defeat at the hands of PAOK in Greece tonight.

A scratch Hammers side - which later in the game featured both youth team coach Kevin Keen and goalkeeper Stephen Bywater in midfield - went down to a goal either side of the break, despite Dean Ashton scoring his fourth goal of pre-season.

The Hammers started with just Carlton Cole up front, whilst Bobby Zamora and Dean Ashton started in midfield. Matthew Etherington at left-back completed an unfamiliar line-up sent out by Peter Grant in the absence of Alan Pardew.

The home side - managed by former Hammer Ilie Dumitrescu - began the game well and could have taken the lead after just three minutes when the Hammers were at sixes and sevens trying to deal with a low cross. Fortunately for Grant's side, the home side wasted the opportunity.

The returning Roy Carroll, making his first pre-season appearance was forced into a good save on nine minutes before committing a howler less than a minute later when he fumbled James Collins' (admittedly strong) back-header.

The ball eventually ended up in the back of the net through Dimitris Salpiggidis, who saved the blushes of a team mate who had rounded Carroll before hitting the post from no more than two yards out.

Stung, the Hammers looked to hit back immediately and forced a good save from the PAOK keeper from a corner. But the home side continued to press and created two good chances before Dean Ashton levelled the scores on 25.

A deep cross from Tye Mears found Carlton Cole on the penalty spot; the former Chelsea man unselfishly nodded the ball down to Ashton who composed himself before firing home from eight yards out.

Level again, the Hammers suffered a scare on 27 minutes when Hayden Mullins conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box; fortunately the resulting effort struck Hogan Ephraim (positioned on the end of the wall) before going safely out of play.

Mullins - captain for the night - had a good chance to redeem himself minutes later but he fired wide when given space on the edge of the box.

As the game neared half-time PAOK began to push forward and Roy Carroll had to be at his best to tip over a dipping drive from Pantelis Konstantinidis on 38 minutes - an effort which proved to be the last of an entertaining half.

Peter Grant sent out the same XI for the start of the second half and within four minutes they were 2-1 down to a fine strike from PAOK's Zegarra.

Not for the first time the Hammers failed to deal with a corner, and Zegarra was first to react to a loose ball which resulted from a Dean Ashton clearance; the striker fired a clever volley into the roof of Roy Carroll's net.

Just two minutes later the Hammers wasted a fine chance to level the scores. An incisive through ball by captain Mullins left Bobby Zamora one on one with the keeper, but he failed to convert (although the keeper will be pleased with his save).

West Ham made the first of four substitutions on 54 minutes; Marlon Harewood replacing Zamora, who had moments earlier missed that great opportunity.

Later arrivals were Teddy Sheringham (on for Carlton Cole), coach Kevin Keen (on for James Collins) and most bizarrely of all, keeper Steve Bywater for Hayden Mullins in the centre of midfield (Bywater thereby making the first outfield appearance by a goalkeeper since the late Les Sealey's run-out at Highbury under the charge of Harry Redknapp).

With the home side making seven substitutions of their own, it was no surprise that the second half offered far less than the first. Arguably the highlight of the final half hour was goalscorer Zegarra squaring up to Dean Ashton on the hour mark; a Greek handbag duly withdrawn and the game continued unaffected.

The Hammers enjoyed their best spell of the second half between 60 and 70 minutes although failed to create anything of substance; the best chance falling to James Collins who fired wide from the edge of the box on 63.

Apart from a PAOK effort on 68 which was hit well over Roy Carroll's bar, neither side created anything dangerous until the dying minutes when James Tomkins saved a certain goal with a brave header off the line.

With the Hammers defence all at sea the 17-year-old found himself in the right position to divert a fierce volley from no more than 10 yards out. Roy Carroll, prone at the time, found time to thank his young team mate.

West Ham's last chance to earn a draw arrived in the shape of a corner three minutes into injury time, but the keeper was well positioned to ensure the home side would be leaving the ahppier of the two.

All in all little can be really be learned from tonight's game due to the ludicrous line-up (and resulting substitutions). But the Hammers may well have to face similar nights to this in the UEFA Cup this season, and if nothing else, the experience of travelling to places like Sweden and Greece can only be good experience.

West Ham United: Carroll, Mears, Etherington, Tomkins, Collins (Keen 76), Mullins © (Bywater 79), Ashton, Reid, Ephraim, Zamora (Harewood 54), Cole (Sheringham 72).

man bemerke die einwechslungen von keeper bywater für mullins (!) und Nachwuchstrainer Keen für Collins (!).

also ist das ergebnis mit abstand zu genießen.

He came in through the transfer window

Filed: Tuesday, 8th August 2006

Author: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham have completed the signing of Sunderland full-back George McCartney, according to reports.

Details of the deal remain sketchy at present although it is believed that Clive Clarke will move in the opposite direction in a player-plus-cash swap deal, with West Ham also paying an estimated £600,000.

Belfast-born McCartney joined Sunderland in 1998, and made his debut for the Black Cats against Luton in the Worthington Cup in 2000.

He briefly captained the side during the 2003-04 season after Jason McAteer suffered a long-term injury.

The 25-year-old defender won his first cap for Northern Ireland in September 2001 in their 3-0 home World Cup qualifying win against Iceland, and was voted Player of the Year by Sunderland fans for the 2004/05 season.

However he has been out of action for some considerable time with knee ligament damage - an injury that is likely to keep him sidelined until the beginning of October.

McCartney - who despite favouring the left-back position can also operate as a central defender - becomes Alan Pardew's sixth signing of the summer.
