Silvinho Gets Spanish Citizenship

Silvinho is free to play for Barcelona after the Brazilian acquired Spanish citizenship on Tuesday.

The former Celta Vigo star signed for the club in the summer on condition he acquired a European passport so Barca would not exceed the limit of three non-EU players per team.

Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Rafa Marquez are now the only three non-EU players in the squad after Edmilson acquired Italian citizenship last week.

Verteidiger Sylvinho vom FC Barcelona hat neben der brasilianischen auch die spanische Staatsbürgerschaft erworben und gilt damit als EU-Bürger.

EU-Gesetzgebung

Im Rahmen der momentan geltenden EU-Gesetzte dürfen europäische Klubs maximal drei Nicht-EU-Spieler aufstellen. Nach Barcelonas Transferaktivitäten im Sommer war die Zahl dieser Profis auf fünf gestiegen, den Abschied von Rüstu Reçber nicht eingerechnet. Sylvinho, Verteidiger Edmílson sowie Stürmer Javier Saviola, der diese Saison an den AS Monaco FC ausgeliehen ist, gelten jedoch mittlerweile alle als EU-Bürger. Nur Ronaldinho und Samuel Eto'o sind somit keine Bürger der Europäischen Union.

Zweijahresvertrag

Der in Sao Paulo geborene Sylvinho unterschrieb bei Barcelona einen Zweijahresvertrag, nachdem er im Juli RC Celta de Vigo verlassen hatte. 2001 war er nach Spanien gekommen und besitzt seitdem einen gültigen Arbeitsvertrag - eine der Voraussetzungen, die erfüllt sein müssen, um die doppelte Staatsbürgerschaft beantragen zu können.

Javier Saviola ist gestern als neuer Spieler vom AS Monaco präsentiert worden. Er erhält die Rückennummer 9. Bei seiner Präsentation sagte Saviola: " Morientes hat hier letzte Saison grosse Arbeit geleistet. Ich hoffe, ich kann dies auch tun. Ich habe nicht um einen Transfer zu Monaco gebeten, aber ich werde das Beste geben hier und möchte helfen das Monaco wieder eine so grosse Saison hat. "

Aber schon bei der Präsentation machte Saviola kein Geheminiss daraus was nach der Saison passieren soll. Saviola: " Ich habe gesagt, dass ich danach wieder nach Barcelona zurückkehren will und dazu muss ich hier Grosses leisten."

Auch Laporta hat nochmal darauf hingewiesen das Saviola in den Zukunftsplanungen von Barcelona eine Rolle spielt und er nächste Saison wieder für Barcelona spielen wird. Und Laporta sagt das Saviola das auch ganz genau weiss.

With the squad now complete and the Spanish League under way, Txiki Beguiristain spoke to fcbarcelona.com about the season ahead.

What's your overall feeling about this new Barca?

"I'm very satisfied with the new squad we've assembled. It's well balanced, competitive and high quality that means we can control possession, which is the basis for success".

What are the principle differences between last season and this, then?

"One is the average age of the squad our typical player now is experienced and able to perform at his best right now. We've put together a team made up of players who were leaders in their old teams - Eto'o in Majorca, Deco in Oporto, Edmilson in Olympique de Lyon and Giuly in Mónaco, as well as players like Xavi, Puyol, Valdés, etc.."

It looks to be a more solid squad, with all the positions well covered and highly versatile players.

"Yes, there are 20 players who could be first choices. Frank now has the option of distributing and sharing the work as any team he puts out will be a competitive one, with the option of winning. Then there are players like Gabri, Edmilson, Deco or Gio, who can play in a number of positions".

The new payers seem to have settled in very quickly

"We've come into this year on the back of a great second half to last season and that has influenced how we go into this one and how we play. The players who were here last year know how the team works and they as much as the manager, are responsible for making sure the new lads understand this. In many ways it's easier for the players to explain to other players what's wanted".

Would you agree th eteam is now less dependant on Ronaldinho?

"We've been working to make that happen. We'll always depend on him, I'm happy about that he guarantees quality and spectacle, I'd like to have him on the pitch for every game, but you can never guarantee that a player can make it through a whole season, so we really need a group of natural leaders for the team".

Are Eto'o and Larsson compatible?

"Yes, they are. Eto'o and Larsson can play together, as can Iniesta, Xavi and Deco, or Deco and Ronaldinho. Quality players are always compatible if you use them correctly and maintain the overall balance of the team, between attack and defence".

The atmosphere in the squad seems to have improved too

"Well, it's a new group. With a new air about it and a new spirit. They are a group of very good players with a winning mentality, who've not had to go through failure. They've done great things and are now determined to take a further step forward and do that with a big club like ours. Barca will bring them an enormous prestige in this respect".

Is this a squad who can aspire to the League and the Champions League?

"It's a squad who can compete for titles, that doesn't mean we're guaranteed to win there's plenty of other circumstances that intervene in the world of football.

Can we win them?

Well, you have to bear in mind that we're not alone, there are other teams here maybe we don't have the best 20 players in the world, but when you are ready to fight for everything, and you have the right spirit, anything can happen".

Analysing the squad

Keepers

"We've got the position well covered. We've got a proven keeper in Valdes, who's really grown up professionally. We've also got Jorquera, who we've got a lot of confidence in. Rubén will play in the B team and when we need him, he can come in and perform for the first team".

Defence

"We've created a profile for every position and we've covered the positions well. The full backs have to defend well, as well as get forward and put in crosses. We have Belletti and Gabri on one side and Gio, Silvinho and Fernando Navaro on the other. In the center of defence we have two tough tackling markers in Puyol and Oleguer, with others - Márquez and Edmilson, who are able to bring the ball out from the back".

Midfield

"We play with three midfielders, one in front of the defence where we've got Edmilson, who's right footed, or Motta who's a left footer and there's also Marquez who can play there. If the full backs push forward, they can cover. We also have the creativity of Xavi, Iniesta, Deco and Gerard. If we want to add a more defensive element, we can bring in Gio or Gabri".

Forwards

"Ronaldinho is ready to take on the responsibility, whilst Iniesta showed what he can do in attack last year and every time he plays, he puts in a spectacular performance. Then there's Larsson, who's a classic center forward and the pace of Eto'o and Giuly."
