Liverpool have reached a prelimary deal to bring Real Sociedad midfielder Xabi Alonso to Anfield, according to the player's agent.

"The crossing of Xabi Alonso to Liverpool is practically done," admitted Inaki Ibanez. "On the part of the player everything is closed and now there are only small details between the club to be done."

Benitez has been tracking the Spanish international for a while and will see him as a perfect partner for Steven Gerrrard in the centre of midfield. Alonso was first capped for Spain last year and featured during their disappointing Euro 2004 campaign.

Meanwhile Rafael Benitez confirmed today that Antonio Nunez has joined from Real Madrid.

The 25-year-old joins the Anfield club on a three-year contract as part of the deal, which saw Michael Owen move to the Bernabeu last week.

"Nunez trained with his new team-mates at Melwood on Tuesday after passing a medical," said a statement on the Liverpool website.

"Even if Owen hadn't signed for Madrid, I already had an offer from Liverpool and I knew that the manager was keen to sign me, which is something to be proud of," said Nunez.

Nunez, who only started ten games for Real, said he was looking forward to the challenge of the Premiership.

"Last season, I found out how hard it would be to play at Real and I know Liverpool will be the same, but I hope to get some more minutes on the pitch."

Real Sociedad have confirmed they have reached an agreement in principle to sell Xabi Alonso to Liverpool.

The Spanish international has been a long-standing target for The Reds since Rafa Benitez was appointed manager earlier in the summer.

Alonso, who had also been attracting Real Madrid's interest, is now close to sealing a switch to The Premiership, for a fee believed to be in the region of €16 million (£10.5 million).

After several days of talks between Sociedad officials and their Liverpool counterparts, the Basque side have acknowledged a deal has been struck.

Sociedad now expect Alonso's switch to Anfield to be concluded swiftly, possibly ahead of The Reds' Premiership clash against Manchester City on Saturday.

The midfielder's agent Inaki Ibanez told skysports.com on Monday that the transfer was extremely close to being completed.

Ibanez confirmed that Alonso had concurred on a five-year contract with the Merseyside outfit and was waiting for the two clubs to reach an accord.

Alonso should now arrive in Liverpool to tie up the move on Thursday, after he has featured for Spain in Wednesday's friendly against Venezuela.

Xabi Alonso today admitted he has turned down the opportunity of playing for Real Madrid to secure a 'dream move' to Liverpool.

The Real Sociedad midfielder is expected to complete his transfer to Anfield later in the week to become Rafael Benitez's third signing as Reds' manager.

Just days after Michael Owen opted to quit Anfield for the Bernabeu, Kopites everywhere will be heartened to hear the lure of Liverpool is still too strong for some players to resist.

"Liverpool are one of those clubs that any player always dreams about being able to play for," he said.

"It is sad that I will not be in the same team as Michael Owen but sometimes things change in life and the future is still positive.

"When it came down to a choice between Madrid and Liverpool I chose Liverpool. They are the club that showed the biggest interest in me."

Alonso also admitted his decision to choose Liverpool owed a lot to his respect for manager Rafael Benitez.

"Not only is Benitez a great coach, he is a master of psychology," said the 22 year old.

"He can make the players become friends and he can help them perform to a higher level. This is how he enabled Valencia to triumph in La Liga.

"I believe under Benitez our work will be excellent. I am convinced that this season the Reds can be considered to win the championship".

The Spanish armada bound for Liverpool's first team hit a rock today when Antonio Nunez suffered a knee injury in his first full training session.

He was only unveiled by the Reds today after joining from Real Madrid in part exchange for Michael Owen, but the club suspect he may have suffered ligament damage, and could be on the sidelines for some time.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "We are all desperately disappointed for Antonio because this injury has come at such a bad time for him and he is understandably gutted. We will know more about his injury tomorrow afternoon."

Nunez, who twisted his left knee with no other player in close attendance, is definitely out of Saturday's Barclays Premiership clash with Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez had earlier announced Nunez's arrival by saying: "I'm very happy because we have signed a good player. He is a winger and a right-midfielder, and for us it is another possibility."

Benitez admitted he has long been an admirer of Nunez, despite his lack of first-team opportunities at Real Madrid. The £3million-rated Nunez failed to start a game during his time in the Spanish capital, his 10 appearances and solitary goal coming as a substitute.

"In Spain you know almost all the players at Real Madrid well," said Benitez. "When I was at Valencia I was looking for a man like this. My idea was the same here and we had this opportunity to sign him. "Michael Owen has gone now and we can't do anything more than sign a good player."

While Nunez claimed it was a wrench bidding farewell to the team he has supported since childhood, he was overjoyed to be joining "one of the biggest teams in the world".

"I am very happy to be here," he claimed. " They are nice people and everybody is always trying to help me. It was difficult leaving Real because I was happy there. But this is my team now and this is the only thing to think about."

RAFAEL BENITEZ'S Anfield revolution continued last night with the capture of Luis Garcia for £6million.

Liverpool have taken advantage of a get-out clause in Garcia's contract to sign the Barcelona winger, 23, who is set to fly to Merseyside in the next 24 hours.

Benitez has been on Garcia's trail for a long time. He managed him at Tenerife and tried to sign his fellow Spaniard during his time at Valencia.

Barcelona had tried to fight off Liverpool's interest even though they loaned Garcia out to Atletico Madrid last season.

But Benitez capitalised on his close relationship with the player to persuade him that his future lies at Anfield.

Garcia, who can play on either wing, will join fellow Spaniards Xabi Alonso, Josemi and Antonio Nunez at Anfield.

Alonso was due at Liverpool today to have his medical and tie up the loose ends of his £10.5m move from Real Sociedad.

Alonso and Garcia's arrivals take Liverpool's spending to over £26m this summer, although they have recouped most of that by selling Michael Owen, Danny Murphy and Emile Heskey for a combined £16.75m.

They will be hoping for happier starts to their Anfield careers than Nunez, who is out for a month after injuring his knee in training.

Man kann zu den Transfers sagen was man will, aber erneut konnte ein vielseitig verwendbarer Klassemann an die Anfield Road geholt werden - in den letzten Jahren wurde gerade das Flügelspiel vernachlässigt, weil einfach keine Flügelspieler da waren...der neue Coach Benitez ist ein Verfechter des Flügelspiels und hat auch dementsprechende Spielertypen, die im Kader der Reds Mangelware waren, eingekauft. Ich bin der Meinung alle 4 neuverpflichteten Spanier sind qualitativ hervorragende Spieler, können der Mannschaft entscheidend weiterhelfen und werden über kurz oder lang - es kommt darauf an wie schnell sie die Umstellung auf den englischen Fußball schaffen, Verteidiger Josemi hatte z.B. keine Probleme - einen Stammplatz bei den Reds ergattern und uns schon sehr bald viel Freude bereiten !!!

Es wird in einer ENGLISCHEN Mannschaft ein Spanier nach dem anderen verpflichtet, während an Transfers von wirklich guten englischen Spielern (auf Garcias Position etwa Shaun Writght Phillips) nicht einmal gadacht wird. LAngsam kommt mir bei dieser spanischen Einfärbung echt das kotzen. Hier wird eine 2. Söldnertruppe aufgebaut, wie etwa damals bei Barcelona und seinen Hölländern.

Da ist auch ein Dyer oder ein Woodgate auf dem Markt, beides englische Nationalspieler, und was ist : Wir kaufen Spanier....

Sollte Benitez nicht sofort grosse Erfloge feiern, wir er mit seiner Spanierpartie einen sehr schweren Stand an der Anfield Road haben. Ich möchte ja den Spaniern nicht ihr Können absprechen, aber in meinen Augen gehen wir genau den falschen Weg.

Beim FC Barcelona hat er auf dem rechten Flügel gespielt, wie Du richtig sagst -nur wurden ihm Deco und Giuly vor die Nase gesetzt, deshalb war ein Vereinswechsel absolut verständlich. Lt. Aussage im obigen Bericht kann er aber auf beiden Flügeln agieren...auf Rechts hilft er uns natürlich noch mehr als auf Links - auf Rechts haben wir dann mehrerer Optionen: die Defensivvariante mit Steve Finnan oder dem jungen Darren Potter, die Offensivvariante mit Luis Garcia - auf Links hat der FC Liverpool ohnehin Harry Kewell der gesetzt ist - als Alternative kann der junge Steve Warnock spielen, der Benitez begeistert hat und den er fördern will - als Defensivvariante steht auch noch John-Arne Riise zur Disposition...auf jeden Fall kann Benitez aus dem Vollen schöpfen... einzig und allein ein 4. Stürmer würde uns noch gut zu Gesicht stehen, aber, ob wir einen Mann benötigen wird die Zukunft weisen.... , außerdem wäre noch ein junger Innenverteidiger(mein Wunsch: Coloccini) von Nöten, da in den letzten Jahren auch Sami Hyppiä mit schnellen, wendigen Spielern seine Probleme hatte...aber man sollte bescheiden bleiben und mit den bisherigen Neuzugängen zufrieden sein

Stimmt, die Verteidigung ist die einzige "Schwachstelle" von Liverpool in diesem Jahr. Aber auch so glaube ich (hoffe auch einwenig), dass man hinter Arsenal und Chelsea, also vor Manchester, die 3. Kraft in England sein wird. Der beste Neuzugang bei Liverpool ist für mich nicht Cisse oder Alonso, sondern RAFAEL BENITEZ.

@ianrush: Genau das was Du KRANK findest, das finde ich wieder genial...gerade solche Spielertypen wie die verpflichteten Spanier können mMn dem FC Liverpool weiterhelfen und das spielerische Element weiter anheben...klar kann die Verpflichtung von Spielern mit einer anderen Mentalität einen Verein verändern...aber wie man am Beispiel Arsenals am besten sieht, absolut positiv... Auch Chelsea(heuer sind immerhin 3 Portugiesen geholt worden) und ManU(ein Cristiano Ronaldo allein ist eine Attraktion!!!) haben nicht nur Engländer in ihren Reihen, sondern viele Ausländer, deren Niveau und Klasse aber unumstritten ist. Ich finde wie schon oben erwähnt, das gerade diese Spieler den englischen Fußball variantenreicher und natürlich noch attraktiver machen.

Man hat sehr wohl an eine Verpflichtung von Engländern gedacht(ein Shaun Wright-Phillips ist schon seit längerem im Gespräch, nur hat er sich klar zu ManCity bekannt, deshalb kam ein Wechsel leider - natürlich hätte uns dieser jungen begnadete Engländer gut zu gesicht gestanden - nicht zustande ). Das Newcastle einen Jonny Woodgate bzw. Kieron Dyer zu einem Rivalen ums internationale Geschäft ziehen läßt, das steht für mich absolut außer Frage...sicher sind interessante englische Spieler auch auf dem Markt, aber der Coach kennt eben diese Spanier besser, ist absolut überzeugt von ihnen und weiß sicher am Besten, das sie den Kader des FC Liverpool verstärken werden !!!

Glaub mir, die verpflichteten Spanier sind allesamt Klasseleute. Josemi überzeugt mich schon jetzt mit tollem Zweikampfverhalten, sehr guter Physis und ist auch technisch über unsere bisherigen Rechtsverteidiger zu stellen. Antonio Nunez wollte Benitez schon als er noch Valencia trainierte - auch wenn Owen nicht zu Real Madrid gewechselt wäre - hätte er ihm ein Angebot unterbreitet, Xabi Alonso ist ein Juwel, ein zukünftiger Superstar Spaniens und der Flügelspieler Luis Garcia ist eine Granate(ihn trainierte Benitez schon als er noch Teneriffa-Trainer war - er ist ein Fan von ihm und wollte ihn ebenfalls schon zu Valencia holen -er kann nicht nur auf beiden Flügeln spielen, sondern ist auch im offensiven Mittelfeld und als Sturmspitze einsetzbar ...). Der Coach hat sich Spieler geholt, die für sein System passen und die Liverpool absolut weiterhelfen können und werden --> siehe Liverpool-Homepage - dort nimmt Benitez zu den 4 Neuverpflichtungen Stellung und erklärt deren Stärken !!!. Die Spieler sind lt. ihren Statements allesamt sehr glücklich und zufrieden unter Coach Benitez zu spielen, das ist ein weiteres Argument für die Verpflichtungen und gab den Hauptausschlag warum sie zum FC Liverpool wechselten...das spricht absolut für Rafa ...Ich verfolge die Karriere dieses tollen Trainers schon jahrelang und bewundere die tolle Arbeit die dieser Coach in Spanien geleistet hat. Ich bin überzeugt von diesem Mann und kann nicht oft genug betonen wie ich mich für den FC Liverpool freue, daß man diesen Trainer holen konnte !!!

Ich kann zwar Deine Meinung nicht beeinflussen, aber eine Söldnertruppe sehe ich keineswegs, sondern einen Verein, der ENDLICH sinnvoll einkauft - einen Trainer geholt hat, der sein Handwerk versteht, bislang einen tollen Job macht und den FC Liverpool wieder an die Spitze Englands führen kann...man muß der Mannschaft Zeit und Vertrauen geben und darf mMn nicht im Vorhinein schon alles negativ sehen und bekritteln...klar wird es Rückschläge und Enttäuschungen geben, aber ich finde der FC Liverpool ist auf einem sehr guten Weg, zwar erst am Beginn einer langen Reise, die den Club wieder an die Tabellenspitze in England führen wird und auch international kann der FC Liverpool wieder zu neuen Höhenflügen ansetzen - mit der Qualifikation für die Champions League ist ein erstes kleines Saisonziel fast schon erreicht . Die Vereinsspitze hat jedenfalls alles getan, um dem neuen Coach einen Kader zu schaffen, der absolut das Zeug hat einen Titel zu holen...wenn nicht schon heuer, dann sind wir auf jeden Fall in den nächsten Jahren zu beachten, die Weichen sind gestellt...wir können uns jedenfalls auf 5 interessante und (hoffentlich) erfolgreiche Jahre unter Coach Benitez freuen...

Ich hoffe, ich konnte Dich mit meinen Argumenten ein bißchen positiver stimmen und du siehst die Entwicklung im Verein vielleicht mit etwas anderen Augen...

Liverpool 2-1 Man City

Steven Gerrard completed Liverpool's second-half comeback as they came from behind to beat a battling City side.

Nicolas Anelka put City ahead against the run of play after Jerzy Dudek dropped the ball at his feet.

But Gerrard sent Milan Baros clear to equalise with a cool finish, and Liverpool pressed forward for more.

David James made several superb stops before Gerrard swept home the winner, and City's misery was complete when Richard Dunne was sent off late on.

New Liverpool boss Rafel Benitez had seen his side enjoy the lion's share of the early possession on his Anfield bow.

But their probing play struggled to break down a determined City defence.

The home side's best early chance came in the 11th minute when Gerrard fired in a long-range drive that James collected comfortably.

City continued to defend in numbers and chances were few and far between at either end until Harry Kewell's dipping shot which dropped just over James' crossbar on 29 minutes.

Kewell tested James again soon after with a low shot through a crowd which the England keeper did well to push wide.

The Reds were piling on the pressure, and from the ensuing corner Sami Hyypia had a clear sight of goal but could not keep his shot down.

City did not threaten until the 37th minute when Antoine Sibierski met Anelka's corner but could not direct his header goalwards.

And yet it was the visitors who snatched the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to an error by Liverpool keeper Dudek.

Jamie Carragher headed Shaun Wright-Phillips' chipped through ball back to Dudek but the keeper fumbled and allowed Anelka to steal in and slot home.

But City's lead only lasted until three minutes after the restart.

Gerrard's clever pass set Baros free in the area and he beat James with a composed finish.

Anelka almost restored their lead when he latched on to Reyna's flick - his first-time shot flying inches over.

City were looking comfortable despite Liverpool enjoying the majority of possession, but the home side burst into life in the closing 20 minutes.

In a whirlwind spell of pressure, Gerrard tested James with a powerful drive that James somehow pushed away.

Then a sweeping move forward sent Djibril Cisse running clear but James came out well to smother his shot.

And seconds later James was City's saviour again with another superb stop to deny Baros who was clean through after Dunne's slip.

But a second Liverpool goal looked inevitable and it duly came on 75 minutes.

A long ball forward sent Baros scampering away once more and although James did well to block his effort, the ball fell kindly to Gerrard who swept the ball home.

City's misery was complete when Dunne was sent off for a second booking after a foul on Cisse in the 85th minute.

REDS FIGHTBACK SECURES POINTS

Liverpool produced an excellent second half display to come from behind and beat Manchester City 2-1 in front of a capacity Anfield crowd today.

The Reds were reeling at half time after a mistake by Jerzy Dudek at the Kop end allowed Anelka to score his first goal of the season.

 

Dudek had little to do before spilling the ball into Anelka's path, as it was an unchanged home side who took the game to their close city rivals.

 

Gerrard, Kewell and Hyypia all went close in a first half where Liverpool threatened to break their visitor's resistance.

 

Liverpool took just 3 minutes of the second half though to cancel out Anelka's opener, as Milan Baros took Gerrard's through pass and calmly lifted the ball over David James.

 

And it was Baros involved again soon after when his surge into the area was brought to a halt by a firm challenge from Distan. Referee Graham Poll ignored the appeals for a penalty as the Reds looked to complete quick turnaround.

 

That signalled a period of Liverpool pressure that lead to them getting their noses in front for the first time on 75 minutes. Skipper Steven Gerrard had been at the centre of everything the Reds produced and he was on hand again to fire into the net after Baros' shot had been blocked by the legs of James.

 

Baros, Cisse and Gerrard himself had all previously come close as the Reds produced an all action second half display to seal the points.

 

A miserable day for City was completed near to the end as Dunne received his second yellow card for a foul on Cisse and was sent off by referee Poll.

This is Anfield. Liverpool's new manager, Rafael Benitez, was left in no doubt about the task he faces. First, the expectation of a frustrated crowd yearning for success after 15 years without a League title. And second, the disorganisation of his side who played the first half with a lack of cohesion.

Liverpool left the field after 45 minutes trailing to a Nicolas Anelka goal that defied the run of play. City had come for a draw. They showed little inclination to go forward and when Shaun Wright-Phillips lobbed the ball forward for Anelka to chase, the home defence was taken by surprise. Jamie Carragher and Jerzy Dudek made a mess of coping with the threat. The keeper let the ball slide out of his grasp and Anelka pounced like a true predator.

It was time for the man who led Valencia to two domestic titles to earn his corn. And quickly.

Liverpool levelled the scores within three minutes of the restart. Josemi, making his home debut, knocked the ball in from the right. Steven Gerrard, who had a fine game, stroked a pass to the feet of Milan Baros and the Czech striker found the net from close range.

Now Liverpool began to motor. David James in the City goal had plenty to cope with and he didn't always cope well. He fumbled as many as he caught but deserves credit for stopping a rush on goal by Djibril Cissé and pulling off a left-handed save to deny Baros.

But he was helpless to keep out Gerrard's winner. Baros shot from close range and James parried the ball to the feet of the Liverpool captain who rammed it home with some style.

City, by this time, were on the ropes and they suffered a body blow in the closing minutes when Richard Dunne was sent off for a second bookable offence.

It was a curious business. Dunne certainly appeared to hold back Baros but referee Graham Poll waved play on. He then stopped the game and consulted a linesman before giving the City man his marching orders and awarding a free-kick to Liverpool.

'I'm not going to comment,' said City manager Kevin Keegan of the incident, before commenting at length.

'When the referee has to call his linesman for police protection as they go down the tunnel that says it all. Our players thought Baros was offside. The referee didn't give the foul at first and the linesman wasn't with play.'

But he acknowledged that his side had been poor. 'We didn't play great. We never got our game going properly.'

Benitez said: 'We can score a lot of goals with this side. It was good that we won because it makes the fans happy.'

One suspects that the jury is still out. Cissé flitted in and out of the game, occasionally showing his pace and close control. But it was Baros, the workhorse, who posed the greater threat. And where would they be without Gerrard? He wins so much ball, testing the keeper with his cannonball shots and caressing the ball to open up the defence.

As for City, what of Wright-Phillips? The young man who thrilled St James' Park with his debut goal for England last Wednesday was largely played off the pitch by John Arne Riise.

The match over, Cissé sowed the seeds of a love affair with the fans by strolling across the pitch and tossing his shirt into the Kop. Whether this show of affection will be reciprocated only time will tell.

Der erste Auftritt vor heimischer Kulisse endete für den neuen Coach gleich siegreich ...sehr wichtig für die kommenden Spiele . Neuzugang Josemi wächst schon sehr gut in seine Rolle, spielt defensiv hervorragend und schaltet sich auch in die Offensive mit ein - er begeistert die Massen und ist drauf und dran ein Publikumsliebling zu werden - nur weiter so, Junge Stevie "Fußballgott" Gerrard ist zur Zeit in einer überragenden Form (Gott schütze Österreich ), hat bei jeder gefährlichen Aktion seine Beine im Spiel und erzielt wichtige Tore - es kann heuer "seine Saison" werden !!! Die restliche Mannschaft zeigt auch was in ihr steckt, wieder mal führt eine geschlossene Mannschaftsleistung zum Sieg -mit den spanischen Neuzugängen ist der FC Liverpool noch stärker und schwerer auszurechnen...der Kampf um die Stammplätze ist entbrannt, wird sehr spannend, jeder Akteur wird sein Bestes geben müssen, um Benitez zu überzeugen - Konkurrenzkampf kann sich nur positiv auf das Team auswirken !!! Mit 4 Punkten aus 2 Ligaspielen und dem Einzug in die CL, der am kommenden Dienstag wohl nur noch Formsache ist, wäre nach langer Zeit wieder einmal ein optimaler Saisonstart gelungen.
