Auweh, schaut genauso aus wie damals bei Larsson. Dürfen wir also auch mit einer Pause von etwa einer Saison freuen, wenn ers überhaupt bis zum Start schafft .

Es ist wirklich wie verhext, da haben wir 2 der potentiell besten Stürmer Europas im Kader, nur der eine ist ein Schatten seiner Form im Nationalteam und der andere, der Rekordeinkauf des Clubs, überzeugte zwar bisher auch eher durch seine Schnelligkeit und hat nun einen Waden UND Schienbeinbruch. Zum speiben. Aber vielleicht zeigt uns auch Mellor, dass wir, noch immer, den besten Sturmnachwuchs der Welt haben...

RAFA HOPING TO STRENGTHEN IN JANUARY

Rafael Benitez says he hopes to strengthen his squad when the January transfer window opens in light of the injury to Djibril Cisse, but admitted it would have to be at the right price.

The Liverpool manager prefers not talk about names of players he may or may not be interested in, but did admit that he was looking to strengthen the squad.

Benitez said: "If we find someone good but not expensive maybe we will sign but if we don't we still have Neil Mellor, Milan Baros, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, and Luis Garcia and Harry Kewell can play as a second striker.

"We are not just scouting one player as we scout the whole market and have many names."

Die ersten interessanten Namen geistern bereits durch die Medien...der interessanteste neben Dauerkandidat Fernando Morientes ist das 18jährige Toptalent des US Lecce - Valeri Bojinov - er schaffte heuer so richtig seinen Durchbruch, hat Qualität und Klasse und sein Marktwert ist noch nicht in astronomischen Höhen angesiedelt...angeblich wurde er schon von Ex-Coach Houllier während dessen Managerperiode positiv gescoutet und er hat im Sommer 2004 Liverpool den jungen Bulgaren ans Herz gelegt....wäre ein Wahnsinn, sollte man ihn bekommen

Des weiteren wird der FC Liverpool lt. Liverpool Echo und KopTalk mit Saints-Stürmer James Beattie, Crystal Palace- Shootingstar Andrew Johnson (mit 8 Treffern 2. in der Torschützenliste hinter Henry!) sowie Saragossa-Angreifer David Villa(Riesentalent !!!) in Verbindung gebracht...

Interessante Leute, bin gespannt wen Benitez im Jänner holen wird bzw. aufgrund d. finanziellen Möglichkeiten holen darf.

@ianrush: Ich finde Du siehst Milan Baros zu negativ - er hat immerhin mit Cissé einen neuen Partner erhalten, mußte sich an einen neuen Coach und an ein neues Spielsystem(fallweise 4-5-1) und neue Mitspieler gewöhnen...im Nationalteam spielt er seit Jahren mit Koller, Nedved, Rosicky & Co zusammen ist eingespielt und dementsprechend erfolgreich...ich finde Du kannst das Nationalteam Tschechiens nicht mit dem "FC Liverpool-Neu" unter Rafa Benitez vergleichen...Milans Entwicklung nach seiner schweren Verletzung ist mMn sehr vielversprechend - er war unter Houllier NIE so richtig Stammspieler(dieser baute meistens auf das Duo Heskey-Owen wie Du als Fan sicher weißt), spielte nach seiner schweren Verletzung eine Klasse-EM - nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil er im Gegensatz zu anderen Topspielern auf Grund seiner längeren zwangsbedingten Pause frisch, topfit und erfolgshungrig war - mittlerweile ist er bedingt durch Djibrils Verletzung der einzige TOPSTÜRMER der Reds - er hat in den letzten 5 Pflichtspielen immerhin 4 mal getroffen, bisher in 10 PL-Spielen 4 Saisontore erzielt, und einige Assists gegeben -er wird mMn immer besser und torgefährlicher und ist absolut unersetzlich im Angriff...ich sehe seine Entwicklung daher sehr positiv

Liverpool plan Cruz swoop Wednesday 3 November, 2004

Julio Cruz’s stint at Inter could be coming to an end after he was today linked with Liverpool.

The Premiership side are looking for a new striker after they lost Djibril Cisse for the season with a leg fracture.

Cruz is definitely an option for Liverpool given his suitability to the English Premier League.

Inter could also be tempted to sell given the stiff competition for a striking shirt at the San Siro right now.

The former Bologna player is way down the list seeing as Adriano, Christian Vieri, Obafemi Martins and Alvaro Recoba are all at the club.

The Argentine could join the Anfield outfit either on loan or on a permanent basis once the January transfer window opens.

The only possible stumbling block is that Cruz has played in the Champions’ League this term, so he would be unable to feature in European competition for the Reds.

Cruz, now 30, has been in Italy since he was signed by Bologna in August 2000 from Feyenoord.

He joined Inter a year ago after the Nerazzurri sold Argentine striker Hernan Crespo to Chelsea.

Liverpool's aspirations of progressing to the knockout phase of this season's Champions League received a massive boost on Wednesday night with a crucial away victory over Deportivo La Coruna. 

A first half own goal by Jorge Andrade was enough to give the Reds a deserved three points at the Riazor and ensure them of their first win in Spain for 21 years.

 

This was Rafael Benitez's first return to his homeland as Liverpool manager and while victory was not essential with regards to staying in the competition he was well aware that a positive result was vital as the group phase enters its latter stages.

 

Deportivo may have been languishing at the foot of Group A after three games and still awaiting to register their first goal but the task facing Rafa's men was a difficult one.

 

Last season's Champions League semi-finalists had not conceded a goal from open play at home in Europe for eleven games and only one English club had previously flown back from this north-western tip of Spain celebrating a victory.

 

Arsenal, Leeds and Manchester United have all come unstuck against Depor at the intimidating Riazor in the past but it was hoped that Liverpool's Spanish contingent - amusingly dubbed 'The Benitles' in 'the morning edition of Marca - could play a key role back on home soil.

 

With Antonio Nunez yet to make his Reds bow and Xabi Alonso on the bench, that responsibility was left to Josemi and Luis Garcia but it was Igor Biscan, Alonso's replacement in the centre of midfield who ran the show in an impressive first half for the Reds.

 

The Riazor was surprisingly not full to capacity for this vital clash, although a healthy contingent of vociferous travelling Reds did their best to create an atmosphere worthy of the occasion.

 

Within the first 30 seconds Liverpool almost gave them something more to sing about. A defence-splitting pass from the midfield sent Milan Baros scampering towards goal with only Depor number oneMolina to beat. The Czech striker seemed certain to score but the keeper was quick off his line and did well to make a brave stop.

 

In what was an end-to-end opening the hosts then threatened to take an early lead. Sergio struck a sweet shot from 25-yards out that had Chris Kirkland diving at full length but fortunately the ball whizzed just wide of the post.

 

The Reds were not perturbed and on the quarter hour mark edged ahead. A surging run through the midfield by Biscan had the Deportivo defenders on the back foot. He then fed the ball through to Riise who rampaged down the left flank before delivering a teasing centre that Jorge Andrade turned into his own net under pressure as Baros lay in wait.

 

It was the least they deserved for making such an enterprising start and although Depor enjoyed moments of possession around the Reds box it was the visitors, with Biscan marauding through the midfield and Baros looking lively up front, who looked more likely to increase their lead.

 

As the interval approached Riise had a shot blocked off the line and the increasingly dominant Liverpool could justifiably count themselves unlucky not to have had the points sewn up as they went in at the break.

 

No doubt fired up by a half-time rollicking from Javier Irureta, the hosts came out for the second half in a more determined mood and during a good period of pressure Alberto Luque tested Kirkland with a well hit free-kick from the right of the area and the Reds keeper was forced onto his knees to make a low save.

 

The momentum continued when Hector then fired narrowly over from distance and the home crowd, who had been woken from their slumber, were given further cause for optimism when the prolific Diego Tristan entered the fray as a 58th minute substitute for Walter Pandiani.

 

Thanks to some heroic defending from a back line that was superbly marshalled by the ever-dependable Jamie Carragher Liverpool were fortunately able to quell the blue and white tide but they struggled to rediscover the free-flowing forward play that had been so evident during the first 45 minutes.

 

Molina in the Depor goal was reduced to the role of spectator as the Reds contently sat on their lead. With the home side staring Champions League elimination in the face Liverpool the attacking onus was on them and Liverpool were happy to try and hit them on the occasional break forward.

 

On a rare foray forward Luis Garcia should have ensured there would be no nervous finale but as he tried to round the keeper he failed to take the ball with him.

 

In the end it didn't matter. With minutes remaining Tristan wasted Deportivo's last chance with a poor header that Kirkland saved comfortably. Rafa's tactics had paid off and the Reds had pulled off a priceless result.

 

The last time a Liverpool team returned home from Spain with a win was in 1983, following a 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, and it's worth noting what happened come the end of that season - the Reds won the European Cup!

 

It may be a long while before that happens again but it's a good omen to cling onto and dreams do sometimes come.

Klasseleistung der Reds im gefürchteten Riazor, wo der AC Milan im Vorjahr mit 4:0 abgeschlachtet wurde und noch kein Team der Insel gewinnen konnte. Liverpool war besonders in der 1. Hälfte die bessere Mannschaft und setzte Depor unter Druck. Baros agierte als einzige Spitze, Kewell hängend und Luis Garcia am rechten Flügel - im zentralen Mittelfeld erhielt Igor Biscan gegenüber Xabi Alonso den Vorzug und war ein absoluter Aktivposten. Die Abwehr ließ nur wenig zu. In der 2. Hälfte kontrollierten die Reds das Spiel (Benitez brachte statt Harry Kewell den defensiv stärkeren Steve Finnan und Liverpool zog sich weiter zurück und verlegte sich nur noch auf Konter). Depor konnte nur wenige Chancen herausspielen und Liverpool geriet nie in Gefahr die 3 Punkte zu verlieren...

Mit diesem Sieg hat der FC Liverpool mit 7 Punkten bei 2 noch ausstehenden Spielen (davon ein Heimspiel gegen Olympiakos Athen) eine sehr gute Ausgangsposition im Kampf um den Einzug ins Achtelfinale der CL !!!

Rafael Benitez admitted it was a frustrating defeat for Liverpool against Birmingham City and said his team were made to pay for a lack of concentration from a corner for the vital goal. 

The Liverpool manager insisted his team should have concentrated better but switched off at a crucial moment which cost the Reds the game.

 

Benitez said: "For myself the supporters and the players it is very frustrating. We had many clear chances with the best to Luis Garcia and Hamann but didn't score.

 

"We made one mistake and they scored. We went to sleep for two seconds and lost concentration. That was enough. We must concentrate for the whole game and we will learn from that.

 

"When you have chances you need to score from them and Luis Garcia and Hamann will be disappointed they didn't score but you might say it was good goalkeeping and a case of bad luck."

 

On the subject of a possible penalty when Luis Garcia's effort was handled by Muzzy Izzett on the goal-line, Benitez refused to use it as an excuse for not winning the match.

 

Benitez said: "The players said we should have had a penalty because it was hand-ball but if the referee doesn't see it there's not a lot you can do about it."

Nach zuletzt guten Heimspielen, setzte es gegen die Blues aus Birmingham die erste Heimniederlage der Saison x/ - es fehlte neben Gerrard und Cissé auch noch Milan Baros, der zuletzt toll in Form war und ca. 1 Woche ausfallen wird, also hoffentlich gegen Crystal Palace wieder spielen kann - im Sturm spielten der junge 19jährige Franzose Sinama-Pongolle und der Australier Harry Kewell, sowie für 20 Minuten durfte im Finish Neil Mellor ran... Liverpool konnte zwar einige Chancen kreiren, doch scheiterte am starken Nordiren Taylor oder am eigenem Unvermögen - die besten Chancen hatten Luis Garcia und Didi Hamann Das Tor resultierte aus einer Standardsituation bei dem die Abwehr geschlafen hat....schade, angesichts der Niederlage von Newcastle und den Patzern von ManU und Arsenal wäre man mit einem Sieg 2 unmittelbaren Konkurrenten um Platz 4. näher gerückt, bei einem noch ausstehenden Nachtragsspiel stünden wir sehr gut da...aber was soll's...das Positive: die Mannschaft kann sich auch ohne Leistungsträger wie Gerrard oder Baros Chancen herausspielen, eine Heimniederlage wird uns nicht umwerfen, ist aber dennoch sehr bitter... Im nächsten Heimmatch gegen Aufsteiger Crystal Palace sind aber 3 Punkte Pflicht, um nicht endgültig den Anschluß zu verlieren...

Emlyn Hughes war einer der größten Reds-Spieler aller Zeiten. Er spielte in der Innenverteidigung, kam 19jährig von den Seasiders aus Blackpool, gewann 4 Meistertitel mit dem FC Liverpool, holte 2x den Europapokal der Landesmeister und 2x den UEFA-Cup unter den Trainerlegenden Bill Shankly und Bob Paisley - der langjährige Kapitän war stets ein Vorbild auf dem Platz, trug von 1967-1979 unglaubliche 665 mal das Reds-Trikot und absolvierte 62 Länderspiele für England. Der FC Liverpool und ganz Fußball-England trauert um eine Legende !!!

Rafael Benitez has stuck to his word and handed Academy graduates Neil Mellor, Darren Potter, Stephen Warnock and Zak Whitbread another chance to shine in tonight's Carling Cup 4th round tie at home to Middlesbrough.

There are also places on the bench for John Welsh, Richie Partridge and David Raven, as the Liverpool boss names a youthful squad for the visit of the holders.

Team in full: Dudek (captain), Finnan, Traore, Henchoz, Whitbread, Diao, Biscan, Warnock, Potter, Mellor, Pongolle. Subs - Luzi, Riise, Raven, Welsh, Partridge.

Talk about a chameleon performance. Having lulled Middlesbrough into a false sense of security by spending the first 80 minutes snatching at a series of half-chances and exhibiting a distinctly suspect first touch, Neil Mellor finally morphed into a predator supreme, scoring twice to eliminate the Carling Cup holders.

"It's good for Neil's confidence because he tried so hard to score all night and then finally managed it twice," said Rafael Benítez, Liverpool's manager. "I wanted to leave him on all game because I hoped he'd get a goal."

Both managers had insisted this competition was "extremely important" to them but the teamsheets indicated otherwise. Benítez made nine changes to the side that started against Birmingham on Saturday and Steve McClaren made six to the XI who began against Bolton on Sunday.

Harry Kewell ranked among the Liverpool absentees but, rather than being rested, the Australian has been partially separated from his team-mates while he undergoes an intensive "personal training programme" which Benítez hopes will prompt a much-needed renaissance in his form.

Stewart Downing's recent performances have seen McClaren's left-winger hyped as a candidate for the England squad to face Spain in next week's friendly but he found Steve Finnan, Liverpool's right-back, a tough opponent and exerted minimal impact in a first period which saw him outshone by Stephen Warnock, Benítez's left-winger.

Boudewijn Zenden had been finding the central-midfield going similarly onerous against Igor Biscan and Salif Diao but was left thoroughly frustrated when his 41st-minute shot past Jerzy Dudek was disallowed for offside after he had been played in by Mark Viduka. At that juncture Viduka looked rather more assured in possession than Mellor, the 22-year-old appearing anything but poised.

The impressive Ritchie Partridge, having missed out on a penalty after being tripped by Franck Queudrue, was destined to help win the tie and it was his incisive through-pass which created the on-rushing Mellor's late opener. Having found his range, Anfield's hero for the night then rifled a second shot past Carlo Nash after being set up by Darren Potter's dispossessing of Zenden.

"I'm disappointed," said McClaren. "Too many of my players were below par tonight."

Besonders freut mich, dass die Jugend eine ansprechende Leisung geboten hat und vielleicht sollte man Mellor, wie von mir schon gefordert, auch mehr Chancen in der Meisterschaft geben. Seon Potential zeigt er ja Woche für Woche im Reserves Team. Sehr wichtiger Sieg fürs Selbstvertrauen, auch der Fans, gegen Boro !

Mich natürlich ebenfalls Rafa Benitez und sein Assistant-Coach Paco Ayestaran haben gemeinsam mit L'Pool-Legende Stevie Heighway(=Entdecker v. Fowler, McManaman u. Gerrard) ehemaliger Linksaussen & Mitbegründer d.Liverpool Football Academy mit großer Freude registriert, daß die Jungspunde erneut(schon gegen Millwall spielten sie toll) aufgezeigt haben und für höhere Aufgaben bereit sind...

In spätestens einem halben Jahr sehen wir einige der Jungs in der Stammelf - besonders Zak Whitbread, den 20jährigen Amerikaner kann ich mir schon in Kürze sehr gut als Alternative für die IV vorstellen. Ich sah ihn bereits bei der letzten U20-WM und damals hat er mir schon als Linksverteidiger mit Offensivdrang imponiert ....aber auch Flo Sinama-Pongolle, Richie Partridge, Stephen Warnock, Johnny Welsh, Darren Potter, David Raven, Neil Mellor oder Robbie Foy(noch 18, Schotte, ein Riesentalent auf beiden Flügeln natürlich werden alle ihren Weg machen, davon bin ich überzeugt.

Außerdem warten noch die verliehenen Franzosen Carl Medjani (dzt. Lorient), Anthony Le Tallec (St.Etienne) u. Alou Diarra (RC Lens), die allesamt ebenfalls große Talente sind, auf eine Rückkehr nach Anfield. Benitez hat mit Freude registriert, daß Diarra so gut ins Lens kickt, daß er Stammspieler u. Nationalspieler wurde, Le Tallec hat nach anfänglichen Problemen beim franz. Rekordmeister ebenfalls Fuß gefaßt und Carl Medjani hat bei Lorient auch schon einen Stammplatz !!! Alle 3 werden lt. Benitez ständig beobachtet und bald wieder an die Anfield Road geholt werden...wichig ist dem Coach, daß sie spielen, Erfahrung sammeln und sich weiterentwickeln können, nur dann können Sie L'Pool helfen !!!

Wie Du siehst, mein lieber Ianrush, um die Jugend brauchen wir uns keine Sorgen zu machen - nur etwas Geduld und Zuversicht - Rafa Benitez hat bei seinen bisherigen Stationen eindrucksvoll bewiesen, was er aus der Jugend macht (siehe Valencia--> z.B. Vicente Rodriguez - er formte ihn zu einem Weltklassespieler )

PS: Ein Spieler auf der anderen Seite (M'Boro) würde dem FC Liverpool auch sehr gut zu Gesicht stehen...ManU ist leider schon wieder an ihm dran (er soll der Giggs-Nachfolger werden ...) - die Rede ist von Stewart Downing - ich glaube er kann die Zukunftslösung im englischen Nationalteam auf der linken Mittelfeldposition sein und sich mit Leuten wie Jermaine Pennant (Arsenal), Kieren Richardson (ManU) und Stephen Warnock um einen Platz im Nationalteam duellieren - jedenfalls ist er ein großes Versprechen für die Zukunft und wird bald bei einem der Großklubs landen. Ich würde ihn natürlich sehr gerne im L'Pool-Trikot sehen !!!

...nur etwas Geduld und Zuversicht...

Wenn man von beiden Eigenschaften nicht schon soviel in den letzten Jahren aufgebraucht hätte .

Anonsten glaube ich auch, dass der eine oder andere in der nächsten Zeit seinen Weg machen und einen Stammplatz ergattern wird. Am meisten Potentialsehe ich da ebenfalls bei Whitebrad und bei Warnock, da beide schon sehr ansprechende Leistungen in der Premier League gezeigt haben.

Ein Downing würde mir auch sehr gut gefallen wie auch ein Andy Reid, aber hier ist wieder das Problem, dass wir nichtmehr das Geld haben um es in Experimente zu stecken. Man versucht ja nurmehr "proven Talent" zu holen. Deshalb bin ich auch sehr gespannt wer im Winter als Cisse Ersatz kommt. Spionkop hat mich da auf eine sehr gute Idee gebracht, denn einen Bojinov von Lecce könnte ich mir aehr gut im Reds Dress vorstellen .

Naja lassen wir uns überraschen und lasst uns hoffen, dass SAF noch länger Trainer bei den Unaussprechlichen bleibt.

Last-Minute Tor von Milan Baros bringt Reds hart umkämpfte 3 Punkte gegen Aufsteiger Crystal Palace

Matchwinner Milan Baros in Jubelpose   

Milan Baros returned from injury with a superb hat-trick to give Liverpool a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield today.

 

The Reds had sorely missed their leading scorer in last week's home defeat to Birmingham and we saw just why as he produced a display full of pace, power and clinical finishing.

 

Last week's headlines had been all about Liverpool's failure in front of goal, but that was forgotten as Baros had the Kop singing with joy with the winning goal just when it looked like being another frustrating afternoon.

 

Crystal Palace came to Anfield brimming with confidence after an excellent recent run and it showed as they further endorsed their claims to stay in the Premiership with another good performance.

 

Iain Dowie, having to cope without leading scorer Andy Johnson, set his side with five across the middle in an attempt to frustrate the Reds and it seemed to work as they failed to create any meaningful chances in the early exchanges.

 

The match sparked to life though in the 23rd minute when Liverpool were awarded a penalty for Leigertwood's foul on Baros. And Baros picked himself up to send Kiraly the wrong way to give Liverpool the lead.

 

It had looked as if Rafa's men would hold that lead until the interval, but Joonas Kolkka stunned the Kop on the stroke of half time with an excellent half volley that gave Kirkland no chance.

 

The Reds restored their lead just a minute later however, as Baros was again in the right place at the right time to convert Alonso's cross from close range.

 

Baros almost made it 3-1 right at the start of the second half when his flick header forced Kiraly into a smart save at his near post. But the Reds were pegged back again on 53 minutes when Michael Hughes found himself unmarked to head home a cross from the scorer of Palace's first goal Joonas Kolkka.

 

Riise, Baros and Alonso all had chances after Palace's equaliser, but with time running out it looked as if Liverpool's home record would further be dented.

 

With Baros on the field though, the Reds always had a chance and they grabbed victory from the jaws of disappointment in the last minute when Baros scored from spot after being brought down by Granville.

 

Rafa Benitez will have been unhappy to have seen his side twice squander a lead, but he will be delighted to get back to winning ways after last week's defeat.

Mein Fazit: Der FC Liverpool holt vor den schwierigen Auswärtsmatches gegen den FC Middlesbrough und in der Champions League gegen den AS Monaco 3 wichtige Punkte. Nach der letzten unglücklichen Heimniederlage spürte man die Verunsicherung in Benitez’ Mannschaft. Der zuletzt sehr erfolgreiche Aufsteiger aus London war ein sehr starker Gegner und machte es den Hausherren nicht leicht. Ian Dowie’s Truppe zeigte erneut, daß die letzten Erfolge – man besiegte Birmingham City auf fremder Anlage und holte ganz überraschend einen Punkt bei den Gunners im Highbury, wo die Früchte des Erfolges bekanntlich sehr hoch hängen – kein Zufall waren. Crystal Palace ist ein sehr gutes Kollektiv, hat mit Andy Johnson, der dieses Mal fehlte, einen Torjäger in seinen Reihen und ist gut organisiert, defensiv sehr stark und natürlich schwer bespielbar, das bekamen auch die Reds zu spüren…doch der FC Liverpool hat Gott sei Dank einen Milan Baros, der sich langsam seiner absoluten Hochform der EM nähert. Mit 3 Toren, davon 2 Elfertreffer, besiegelte er das Schicksal der Eagles und bringt Liverpool fast im Alleingang in die Erfolgsspur zurück. Bravo Milan, Bravo Reds für eine großartige Moral !!!

Der FC Liverpool schiebt sich damit (bei einem noch ausständigen Heimspiel gegen Pompey) auf den 6. Tabellenrang vor und liegt gut im Rennen um die Champions-League-Plätze …jetzt geht es darum bei den starken M’Boro im Riverside-Stadium, gegen einen Mitkonkurrenten um die internationalen Plätze, zu punkten, den Anschluß nicht zu verlieren und sich Selbstvertrauen für die vermutlich entscheidende CL-Partie um den Aufstieg ins Achtelfinale, in Monaco zu holen !!!
