Einser Goalie wird wohl Kirkland nach seiner Verletzung werden. Er hat auch imho die besten Voraussetzungen der beste Goalie von der Insel zu werden. Ausserdem hat er seine stärksten Jahre noch weit vor sich und bis jetzt meistens auch sehr gut gehalten...

Achja und nein danke zu Hargreaves, der mir persönlich überhaupt nicht zusagt und auch als Hamann Ersatz für mich nicht vorstellbar ist. Ausserdem will ich ihn niemals im Reds Dress sehen.

Chris Kirkland wäre mMn schon längst Standardtorwart in der Nationalmannschaft, wenn er nicht immer so ein Verletzungspech hätte! Aber vielleicht hat er jetzt schon so einen "Vorsprung" an Verletzungen, dass er sich niemehr gröber verletzt?

Owen entscheidet die Trainerfrage mit

Neue Wege in der Trainersuche geht der FC Liverpool. Nach der Trennung von Gerard Houllier sollen langjährige Spieler des Rekordmeisters bei der Bestellung des neuen Trainers ein Wörtchen mitreden.

Valencia coach Rafael Benitez has left the Spanish champions.

He refused the offer to extend his contract, which is due to expire in summer 2005, by two years.

A club spokesman confirmed to PA International that Benitez had left and a press conference has been called for 12:30 local time (11:30 BST).

Benitez has led `Los Che' to two Primera Liga titles in the past three years and this year's UEFA Cup.

"I can confirm that Rafael Benitez will not continue at Valencia after the club and the coach agreed to part ways," the spokesman said.

Liverpool is widely expected to be his next destination.

Liverpool's attempt to attract significant investment from Thailand is on the brink of collapse after the country's prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, scrapped his proposed state lottery to raise the £56m required and hinted he might cancel the deal altogether.

Thaksin has seen opposition to the possible deal mount markedly over recent weeks and, having already offered various schemes to raise the money to purchase a 30% stake, accepted criticisms that the lottery would encourage poor people to gamble to try to win the 1bn baht (£13m) top prize.

"Taking money from the poor is not our aim," he said. "We have to scrap the lottery project. We will choose any other ways which are best for us, which have the least problems. Our financial experts and the legal team are performing [the due diligence], but nothing is certain. If it is affordable to buy we will buy, if not we will not. At the moment I am not certain that we can buy [the stake] or not."

His growing doubts reflect a steady fall in his popularity in the country. Recent polls show support waning from 70% to just over 50%, and a general election is due in February.

Should the Thais withdraw, Liverpool's clout in the transfer market will be severely hampered, restricting possible purchases for the prospective new manager Rafael Benítez.

The club had hoped to spend £30m and the Spaniard had already earmarked Santiago Cañizares, Pablo Aimar and Roberto Ayala from his former club, Valencia.

The building tycoon Steve Morgan, whose own £73m scheme involving shares and rights issues was twice rejected by the Liverpool board last month, would consider re-entering the fray.

While there is still a possibility that Thaksin could raise the £56m via private investment, not least from his own billionaire fortune, dropping the lottery is a blow and appears to have been triggered by comments from the prime minister's political mentor, Cham- long Srimuang, who joined a growing list of eminent academics and social activists in condemning the plan.

Srimuang claimed a lottery amounted to "open, official support for gambling". Each ticket was to have cost 1,000 baht (£13).

Southampton have been linked with a move for Liverpool's attacking midfielder Vladimir Smicer, though it is thought the Czech international would like to stay at Anfield and impress the new manager. Smicer has a year left on his Reds contract could be part of a clear-out following the departure of Gerard Houllier. Saints boss Paul Sturrock is an admirer of the oft-maligned 31-year-old and is reportedly preparing a £1.5million offer for him, though his £25,000 a week wages could present a problem. Smicer seems prepared to try his luck with the new gaffer at Liverpool though, as he told the club's website: "I had a good relationship with Gerrard Houllier because he bought from Lens and it was sad for me when he left, but we knew he was under pressure towards the end of last season, and that's life. I don't know who the new manager is going to be yet but I am happy at Liverpool. I have a year left on my contract and I would like to stay there." It may not be up to him however.

Smicer würde ich ziehen lassen...er hat einige gute Spiele für Liverpool gemacht, ist aber mMn ein Spieler der schon über dem Zenit ist und der auch sehr verletzungsanfällig ist...

A Racing insider has told AS that Liverpool have been in contact about the Israeli international, though insists no firm offer has been made. Liverpool have been working through intermediaries

Benayoun can join Liverpool as an EU player as he is due his passport and is available for a knockdown £2 million.

Rafael Benítez is due to fly to Merseyside today with the Premiership club hoping to unveil him as their new manager within the next 48 hours.

The Spaniard resigned his position at Valencia last week after three hugely successful seasons at the Mestalla. Liverpool's chief executive Rick Parry has already held discussions in Spain with Benítez's representative Manuel García Quilón over the vacant position at Anfield and those ended with the 44-year-old former Real Madrid B and Tenerife coach agreeing in principal to succeed Gérard Houllier.

Further talks will take place early this week to smooth the finer details of the deal, believed to be a four-year contract worth £25,000 a week, which will virtually double the salary Benítez enjoyed in winning the Spanish League title last season.

Liverpool are anxious to conclude the matter ahead of the start of Euro 2004 as that will give Benítez time to assess squad strengthening this summer, with three Valencia players - the Argentinians Roberto Ayala and Pablo Aimar and the Spanish goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares - potentially to follow him to Anfield along with his No2 Francisco Ayestaran.

PS: Bei der EURO sind auch einige junge, hungrige Kandidaten im Einsatz, denen das Liverpool-Dress sehr sehr gut stehen würde...einen Andreas Isaksson(Djurgarden IF), Christian Wilhelmsson(Anderlecht) oder Kim Källström(Stade Rennes) z.B., Spieler die bei derzeit wenig bekannten Vereinen kicken, könnte ich mir sehr gut auf der Insel, insbesondere natürlich beim FC Liverpool vorstellen...

But how much longer will Steven Gerrard be at the club? Rumours this morning reckon that Roman Abramovich will hand over £31m in hard cash - possibly in a suitcase - to try and tempt the Anfield board to part company with their hottest property. If the seemingly-mythical Thai deal fails to become reality, cash-strapped Liverpool would surely have to snatch the Russian's hand off. Gerrard may well love his club, but does he love it more than the millions that he would offered to move to Stamford Bridge? Meanwhile, Djibril Cisse is certainly looking forward to life on Merseyside: "I am looking forward to my first game at Anfield with Liverpool. Two years ago, I went there with Auxerre in the Uefa Cup and I was very impressed by the English fans. I want to sample the English atmosphere, to see full stadiums. Chelsea are ready to triple Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's salary to take him to Stamford Bridge.

The Independent says Gerrard now wants permission to speak with Chelsea's chief executive, Peter Kenyon.

Gerrard has a "gentleman's agreement" with Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry that would allow him to leave if the club did not show "significant improvement" last season. Liverpool's progress from fifth to fourth was not sufficient to keep Gérard Houllier his job as manager and it may not be enough for Gerrard.

Parry offered the agreement to the England midfielder as an inducement to sign a new contract last season which guaranteed he would not leave Anfield as a free agent next year.

Meine Wenigkeit hätte einen Mann im Auge, den ich genauso schätze wie Stevie und der zur Zeit (noch) in der 1.Divison spielt, aber lt. Anfrage an seinen Präsidenten seinen Weggang bereits angedeutet hat: die Rede ist von keinem geringeren als Hammers-Spieler Michael Carrick . Sollten wir ihn bekommen, könnte ich mit Gerrards Weggang noch halbwegs leben...weh würde es als Fan aber schon tun nach Robbie Fowler und Steve McManaman erneut einen weiteren Liverpooler Jungen ziehen zu sehen, der "seinem Verein" den Rücken kehrt...

Ich würds sehr schade finden, wenn Gerrard gehen würde. Michael Carrick wär zwar ein toller Neuzugang, aber einen "Nachfolger" von Gerrard wird es so oder so nur schwer geben können.

Steven Gerrard's future at Liverpool is in serious doubt, it emerged last night, despite the club's pledge to do all they can to persuade him to remain at Anfield.

The 24-year-old is due to meet Liverpool's chief executive Rick Parry and the new manager Rafael Benitez on his return from Euro 2004, with the Spaniard desperate to build his side around the midfielder. Yet the player himself is believed to have made up his mind that his best chance of winning something would be to move to Chelsea.

The Londoners have made no secret of their desire to lure the midfielder to Stamford Bridge, with a formal bid in excess of £30m expected to be submitted next month. That will test Liverpool's resolve, with Parry aware that a sale might represent the simplest way of generating funds for Benitez given the problems the club have faced in finalising an anticipated injection of investment from Thailand.

Liverpool have scheduled more discussions with the media tycoon Paiboon Damrongchaitham next week, after the Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra curtailed his government's interest in buying a 30% stake in the club.

If that £56m deal is completed, granting Benitez money to add to the squad, Gerrard may be persuaded to honour the four-year contract he signed only last November.

That deal inflated his weekly wage from around £30,000 to nearer £55,000, yet the midfielder has become deeply disillusioned. Having spent time with Chelsea's England contingent in Portugal and seen the success Jose Mourinho inspired at Porto, he is swayed towards ending his 13-year association with the club.

That will leave Benitez facing a troubled start to his reign as Michael Owen is expected to sign only a one-year extension to his deal, which has 12 months remaining

Benitez's reshaping of the club began yesterday when the departure of Gérard Houllier's assistant Phil Thompson was confirmed. The former Liverpool captain, who won seven league titles and two European Cups with the club, rejoined the coaching staff six years ago and acted as caretaker when Houllier recovered from heart surgery in 2001.

"Following talks it has been decided that Phil will leave the club," confirmed Parry. "All the discussions were conducted in a totally amicable manner. I want to thank Phil for all his hard work as he played a major part in the successes we enjoyed during that period."

Benitez is expected to bring his backroom staff, though he will attempt to retain an English element to the set-up and Sammy Lee, with Sven- Goran Eriksson in Portugal, is expected to remain at Anfield.
