Pass And Move - It's The Liverpool Groove
Glazer prepares fresh Man U assault

Richard Wray

Monday December 20, 2004

The Guardian

Malcolm Glazer, the American business mogul and owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is preparing a fresh assault on Manchester United having informally approached the board of the Premiership football club last week.

Representatives of Mr Glazer, who owns a 28% stake in the club, are believed to have met Manchester United's chief executive, David Gill, last week to say the American tycoon is considering submitting a fresh £800m offer.

The American's camp apparently told Mr Gill any new offer would consist of more cash and less debt.

The club rejected Mr Glazer's original offer, believed to have been pitched at 300p a share, because it would have left the club heavily in debt and potentially forced the sale of the Old Trafford ground. A spokesman for Manchester United refused to comment while Mr Glazer could not be reached for comment.

But Mr Glazer's financial ability to do any deal is still unclear. He is understood to be eager to rehire US investment bank JP Morgan to put together a new bid. But the bank, which would not comment last night, is not believed to be working with him or to want to become involved again.

The American investment bank, along with public relations advisers Brunswick, resigned from the Glazer camp last month after Mr Glazer's decision to vote three United directors off the company's board at a tense shareholders' meeting at Old Trafford.

Both advisers had warned Mr Glazer about antagonising the United board by refusing to vote for the re-election of Maurice Watkins, Philip Yea and Andy Anson. His legal team at Allen & Overy also quit after the fractious vote.

The club has since recruited one of its wealthiest and best-connected fans as a non-executive director. Jim O'Neill, a partner at investment bank Goldman Sachs, already has about £3.5m worth of Manchester United shares - and his investment banking experience will be invaluable to the club if Mr Glazer does mount a renewed assault.

Last week's meeting between Mr Glazer's representatives and Mr Gill was originally called by the club to try to persuade the American businessman to support the re-election of the three ousted directors.

The departure of JP Morgan left many in the City thinking that Mr Glazer would back off until at least the new year. But just two weeks ago press reports indicated he had held talks with Deutsche Bank about organising financing for a potential bid.

After receiving a flood of abusive emails and a succession of bogus deliveries, the investment bank put out a statement saying it was not in talks with Mr Glazer.

Any fresh approach from Mr Glazer is likely to provoke an angry reaction from Manchester United's fans.

Earlier this month his new PR adviser, Bob Leffler, a sports PR specialist based in Baltimore, provoked the ire of fans by telling a local American newspaper that opposition to his client's previous bid was due to "xenophobia and fear of the unknown", rather than any solid business logic.

United shares soar

Malcolm Glazer is rumoured to be making a renewed bid for Manchester United ... and the club's share price is shooting up

Malcolm Glazer

Guess who's back, back again...

Manchester United shares rose by 4% at the start of trading this morning amid speculation that Malcolm Glazer was about to make a renewed bid for the club.

The American billionaire, who owns a 28.11% stake in the club, has already been rebuffed once by United chief executive David Gill with an approach the club felt would incur too much debt.

However, Glazer is now thought to have put together a new package that does not require the same extent of leverage, and rumours are rife he will inform the Stock Exchange that he intends to lodge a formal takeover offer of around 300p per share.

That would value United at around £800m but to push the deal through, Glazer would need the agreement of the club's major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus, who broke off contact with the Florida-based tycoon in October.

Glazer has long coveted United, who he believes are capable of generating more revenue than they currently do even though they remain the most profitable football club in the world.

The owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL franchise, Glazer suffered a major blow to his plans when bankers JP Morgan and PR company Brunswick withdrew their support last month in protest at his decision to vote three senior United directors off the Old Trafford board.

It was Gill's determination to reinstate commercial director Andy Anson which is believed to have triggered the latest twist to the United takeover story.

Having established contact with Glazer in an effort to persuade him to allow Anson to take his director's seat before Christmas, it has been reported that Gill's proposition was turned down, with the American then stating his new finance arrangements.

But the United hierarchy, who have long since grown tired of Glazer's manoeuvrings that have twice forced the club into an Offer Period this year, told him they would not discuss any bid unless he made a formal offer.

One of Gill's options would be to ask the Takeover Panel to deliver a 'put up or shut up' notice to the American, which would give him a time limit by which point he must declare his intentions.

Spector poised to go out on loan

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he is prepared to let defender Jonathan Spector leave the club on loan in the New Year.

The 18-year-old American has impressed since making his first senior start against Blackburn in August.

However, with first-team opportunities limited at present, Ferguson is ready to listen to offers.

"We feel he is the type that needs that challenge now," Ferguson told Manchester United Radio.

"He is very close to first-team level and the challenge of going out on loan will test him and bring him on that bit further.

"We are looking at letting Jonathan go out on loan in the next couple of weeks."

Spector will join a celebrated list of Old Trafford players that Ferguson has sent out on loan to gain valuable first-team experience.

England captain David Beckham spent time at Preston, while John O'Shea has had spells at Bournemouth and Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp.

Ferguson currently has keeper Luke Steele and striker Eddie Johnson on loan at Coventry.

Walsall boss Paul Merson recently made an approach to take Kieran Richardson, Chris Eagles and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake on loan but Ferguson rejected the offer.

"It's part of their football education," said Ferguson.

"I have always found when a player comes back having been out on loan, they are mentally and physically stronger.

"If they go to clubs that are maybe not doing that well, it gives them an insight into life away from Old Trafford because everything is luxury here."

:finger:
