In an interview granted to El Larguero of Spanish radio's Cadena SER, Fernando Gago revealed what, to this point, had been the unknown and most intimate facts about his childhood and personal life. The Argentine also expressed how happy he was that his dream of playing for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium finally became reality.

It's been a great trip. It was always a dream of mine. I was so excited the first time the President and I spoke. I had to tell my entire family. I had always planned on playing for Real Madrid and I am so happy that my dream has come true. I am thrilled to be playing here and I hope I can help this team win lots of titles.

The match

I was happy for the team because we played well and won. We're on the right track. Seeing the Stadium for the first time really caught my attention. I was stunned because so many good players have passed through here, but I didn't feel any pressure. It's a lot different than the Bombonera, where people sing more. Although people here are very passionate as well. What's important is that we got a positive result and the fans supported us. Never did I feel tested by the Bernabéu, but rather the opposite. In any case, I always take the pitch with a cool head and I want to focus on helping my team. We had a tough match on Sunday and the win helped calm the air. We were very motivated and the match turned out well.

Quick adjustment

I adapted to the team pretty quickly because my teammates made me feel comfortable from minute one. Higuaín and I weren't friends. We knew each other but nothing more. But now we spend a lot of time together and we know how one another play. We're trying to improve as fast as possible in order to help our teammates. I can bring a lot of hard work to the table and I hope to do the best possible, but easy. This is a great team and I'm not anyone's savior.

My locker is between Raúl Bravo's and Ruud's, and I already have everything ready. I was amazed by the dressing room and it's such an honour to be a part of this team comprised of these players. I'm used to the pressure thanks to where I came from. I have to keep cool, but the pressure doesn't bother me. I like it. I was very upset that we lost the last title at Boca, but I hope I can make up for it by winning one here. That's why I came.

I felt very comfortable and supported by my teammates. I'm getting used to the system and think it's good that there are two players to support the team. The coach has told us what he wants and we want to adjust to what he asks.

I life defined by a ball

I am 20 years old and was born in Ciudadela, a Buenos Aires neighbourhood. I have yet to finish high school, but I haven't had time to. I enjoy studying and reading. Reading football-related things relaxes me. I also like video games, but reading makes me feel more comfortable on a social level. I like spending time with family and friends to disconnect from football, but I never have the time. In fact, I record my own games so I can later watch them and analyse my mistakes so they don't happen again.

My mom is a housewife and my dad worked his whole life to make sure we had everything we ever needed. I am very proud of him. He died one year ago and his death really affected me, but I have to move on by supporting my family. I really missed him on Sunday because he loved football and always gave me advice.

I was given my first football before I even turned three. It was my only toy. Fernando Redondo was always my idol and the way he played always impressed me. We have spoken over the phone, but never met. We never speak about football. The last time we spoke we agreed to meet the next time we're both in Madrid.

I started off at Club Parque with Ramón Madoni, who has one of the best eyes for young talent in Argentina. Players learn a lot from him. I joined Boca when I was still very young, and it's such a unique Club due to the enormous amount of pressure and passion. I have an important friendship with Maradona, which is another dream come true. He always has something to say and I there is always something to learn from him.

Raul ist seit 94 (laut transfermarkt.de) bei Real. Den zähle ich schon dazu!

raul wurde 1977 geboren, kam 1992 zu real --> also im alter von 15 jahren (erst 2 jahre in der B, dann in der ersten mannschaft). schon gut, den feinschliff hat er sicherlich bei real bekommen, das kicken aber bei den rojiblancos erlernt! als halben eigenbauspieler kann man ihn durchgehen lassen...

Meiner Meinung nach hat er aber zumindest mit den Aussagen über die Spieler vollkommen Recht, aber das ist Ansichtssache.

Scheint zu einem Streit bei besagter Aussprache gekommen zu sein!

Einige Spieler sollen gefragt haben, ob er für oder gegen sie ist. Dann soll jemand gesagt haben, dass er es ihnen gefälligst ins Gesicht sagen soll, wenn er ein Problem hat.

How is Emerson doing?

He got injured during Saturday's training session. Míchel had problems to come up with a Castilla squad list because we borrowed some of his players in the very last minute. I asked Emerson to be on the bench during the match anyway. The following day, the press said he got injured while on the bench. I must apologise to him. I forgot to explain his condition during the press conference, but then again, you only asked three questions about the match.

Gonzalo Higuaín is a happy man. After debuting with the Whites just one week ago against Betis and then last Sunday in front of his home Bernabéu crowd, the Argentinian forward has already created quite a stir amongst Madridista fans. “I still have a lot to see and learn," stated an always-humble Higuaín, adding he wanted to "continue down this path" in order to one day become "an idol at the Bernabéu."

Explain how you have already become one of the new idols of the Bernabéu after playing just one match.

No, no (laughs).

You didn't even score a goal. Once you do, they will raise a statue of you on top of one of the lions of La Cibeles fountain!

(Laughs) I am very happy with the way everything has been going, but it was the team as a whole that achieved the victory against Zaragoza, thus allowing a few players to stand out. It was a collective effort: running, scoring, and playing to win.

We spoke about how colossal the Bernabéu is before you even came to Spain. Seventy-two hours after your debut, what part of those 90 minutes do you remember best?

Playing in the Bernabéu is a unique experience. It's just incredible, especially with all the stands full of people. I truly feel this is something unique. Now that I have played in this stadium donning the Real Madrid shirt, I want to make this opportunity count. Being a part of this team and defending this Club's emblem and colours is special for any footballer.

Did you feel the Bernabéu warmed up to you? I ask because every time you touched the ball, you could hear a rising murmur from the stands that only happens with big-time players.

Yes, of course I felt the warmth you speak of. Honestly, I felt very comfortable thanks to the fans' affection and the support from the coaching staff and players. I felt great and relaxed, and all I hope for is to continue down this same path. We achieved an important victory that skyrocketed our morale and today we have another crucial match that we need to win to move on to the next round of the King's Cup.

Please explain how a 19-year old like you can play in the Bernabéu for the first time and make it look like it was your 250th La Liga match.

Truly, the secret to being calm is the support I got from the coach, his staff, and all my teammates since the day I joined this team.

Did this squad really welcome you with open arms?

Yes, they did. All my teammates told me to be calm and to play like I know how to, and that's what I am doing. I hope to continue doing exactly that. The team and I cannot wait for the Betis match.

Is it too soon for say you're an idol for Real Madrid fans?

Yes, it's too soon for me to feel that way.

I guess you dream of becoming one in the future?

Of course. I partly came here to become a Bernabéu idol and to be an important part of the history of this Club. This is one of the greatest clubs in the world. Nevertheless, I don't feel that way at all at this stage.

When Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham, Figo, Raúl and Casillas were all together on the team, we dubbed that Real Madrid team The Galacticos. How would you tag Real Madrid now that Gago, Diarra, Marcelo and yourself are on the team?

I don't know (laughs). It's up to the fans to decide. They are the ones who give players their nicknames. All of us, both veterans and newcomers, will give our all to win a trophy for the fans. The squad and the coaching staff work very hard in order to achieve this.

Do you think the squad is hungry for trophies again?

Yes, of course. This squad has never ceased having that hunger. It was obvious in the match against Zaragoza. We hope to continue down this path to achieve our goals.

Do you think Betis is capable of an upset, here, at the Bernabéu?

The first leg match was tough. We had to run and fight hard throughout the entire game. I think their predisposition will be the same this time around. We will be stronger than ever and we will try to play even better than we did against Zaragoza, which I thought was good anyway.

So, you are aware that you cannot fail today...?

Yes I am. We can't afford to fail tonight. We are all very eager to face Betis and to go through to the quarterfinals.

Do you and the team feel pressured with the press closely following up on the sticky situation the Club has been experiencing over the last month?

No. Like I said on several occasions, this Club is similar to the one I come from in Argentina. I have the same pressure here as I did there. The fans are very similar and I am used to it. Truth be told, I am very happy to be here.

You don't feel that the Real Madrid shirt is a burden? I am curious because I tried out for the team when I was 12 years old and it weighed a ton.

(Laughs) I try to be loose and play easy, simple football like I did at River Plate and not think about anything else. I just want to do my best for the team.

Are you not too young to succeed at Real Madrid at only 19 years of age, or does success not depend on age?

Yes, I am young and I have a lot to see and learn, but I think anyone can achieve their goals if they set their heart to it.

You said that Madrid is back in the fight following the Zaragoza match. What did you mean?

That we're back in the fight. That the two teams in front of us lost and we won. It was great. We made up ground. It was exactly what we wanted and now, we're back.

Do you think Barcelona are having problems?

I think Barcelona are also a good team, but we're not thinking about them and what they do, just about doing things well.

You dreamed about playing in Madrid when you were in Argentina, but now that you are here, what are your dreams?

Winning lots of trophies and bringing lots of joy to Madrid supporters.

And if you could pick just one title?

The three.
