The Orlando Magic, unsure about the intentions of franchise player Dwight Howard-who told teammates Wednesday morning he planned to “opt in” and play the final year of his contract–have told Howard he has to get that paperwork into the NBA office by the end of the day, according toba source. Otherwise, the Magic will proceed with potential trade discussions before Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline.

Howard, who has long been expected to opt out of the last year (2012-13) of his deal and become a free agent at season’s end, said after Tuesday’s game with Miami that he wanted to stay with the Magic through the end of the season. It was the first time that Howard-who asked to be traded during training camp- had expressed any desire to stay in Orlando, which has been trying for weeks to convince him to stay.

The request was a “complete surprise” to the Magic, according to a league source. So was Wednesday’s declaration.

But Orlando is not convinced Howard genuinely wants to stay.

The Magic have asked Howard for months to commit just to playing next year. His sudden acquiescence, a day before the trade deadline, is being viewed skeptically by the Magic-hence the demand that both Howard and agent Dan Fegan sign by Wednesday evening. The Magic “can’t roll the dice,” the league source said.

Did New Jersey Just Get Screwed?: The New Jersey Nets may have just gotten screwed… twice.

The word is Dwight Howard called a team meeting in San Antonio and told his teammates that he was staying, and that they all had a role to play in winning a championship this year. He then told the Magic he’d opt-in for the final year of his deal. The Nets, who have been pursuing Howard, are losing out.

During All-Star weekend in Orlando a well-connected NBA source who is usually never wrong on such things, exclaimed without hesitation that Deron Williams was going to the Dallas Mavericks in July, and that is was “done”.

At the time, the idea seemed so far-fetched; we talked about it, but really didn’t give the idea much credit.

On All-Star Sunday, a source close to Dwight Howard was asked about Deron and Dwight being in New Jersey at the trade deadline, and that source at the time said not to call it done, that Deron had “screwed” Dwight.

Today, those comments make so much more sense.

The New Jersey Nets have a tough decision to make… with word leaking out that Dwight Howard will opt-in to the final year of his contract, the Nets may have lost out on the second star they were hoping to pair with Deron Williams.

Nets source say that Deron’s situation is not nearly as connected to Dwight Howard as one might think, and that they are not sold Deron will leave the team even if the club misses on Howard.

During All-Star Weekend in Orlando, well connected NBA sources pegged Williams as headed to Dallas if things didn’t come together in New Jersey, so the Nets will have a tough decision to make in the next 20 plus hours.

Do the Nets hold on to Williams or do they panic and trade him rather than risk losing him in July?

1st rounder wird wohl gemeint sein.

Natürlich logisch von den Magic, zu checken, obs nur ein Bluff von Howard ist, aber sollte DH12 wirklich einlenken und die Spieleroption annehmen... würd für die Magic natürlich bzgl. Trades auch wieder einiges ändern, Zeit wird halt knapp (und Assets habens ja ned wirklich)

Dwight Howard has confirmed that he will opt-in for the 12-13 season in an exclusive interview with RealGM's Jarrod Rudolph.

Howard will formally sign the paperwork in the morning on Thursday.

"My soul, everything I have is in Orlando. I just can't leave it behind."

Over the course of Wednesday, Howard appeared to be indecisive on his wishes for the 12-13 season in the face of a possible trade from the Magic. The organization informed Howard they would seek a trade if he couldn't give them an assurance of his desire to remain beyond the current season.

"I have gotten some bad advice," said Howard. "I apologize for this circus I have caused to the fans of our city. They didn't deserve none of this."

nene ist der verlierer schlecht hin, aber gut, er hatte einfach einen zu guten vertrag in denver. das die rockets fisher und camby bekommen ist mMn eine super verstärkung. was die blazers mit okur wollen check ich nicht

love it. sessions und hill (und eyenga) statt walton, fisher und kapono ist bombe, da die letzten 3 genau nutzlos sind und waren. vom sentimentalen her schade, dass fisher geht aber seit 2009 war da halt kaum mehr was an leistung.

die 2 first rounder sind irgendwie schade, aber wie es aussieht wird der dallas firstrounder sowieso nicht dieses jahr schlagend werden. so ganz ohne gegenleistung bekommt man halt selten sowas. sessions ist zwar nicht VIEL besser in der D, ist aber ein ganz anderes kaliber in der O.

bin schon gespannt.

Session ist eigentlich chon ein guter Verteidiger. Hat(te) halt eher Distanzwurfprobleme, aber ist heuer bisher auch irgendwie über 40% hinter der Dreierlinie.

Kein Lowry (den die Lakers ja angeblich unbedingt haben wollten, aber Rockets ned mal bei Gasol schwach geworden wären), aber Lakers haben sich schon stark verbessert mit den beiden Deals.

Session ist eigentlich chon ein guter Verteidiger. Hat(te) halt eher Distanzwurfprobleme, aber ist heuer bisher auch irgendwie über 40% hinter der Dreierlinie.

muss zugeben, dass ich kaum was von sessions live gesehen habe - aber egal wo man schaut (espn, cavs blogs, lakers blogs, was man halt findet) wird seine D kritisiert. zumindest wird sie also ned toll sein besser als derek fisher, der für unzählige career highs gegnerischer PGs gesorgt hat, ist er in jedem fall.
