Rosell: “Worst case scenario is that we will quit UEFA"

President of FC Barcelona, Sandro Rosell, was interviewed by Al Jazeera Sport and shared his opinion about the Spanish Liga, Champions League, Guardiola, the eternal rivalry between Barcelona and Madrid, and also the club’s deal with Qatar Sports Investments.

Talking about Pep Guardiola, the president once again underlined that the coach is “an example of the values which we hold. He is self-effacing and has a culture of hard work and exceptional effort. He starts preparing for the next game when we are returning from a match on the plane.” Asked about the possible renewal of Guardiola’s contract, Rosell assured that “players, fans and the board want him to continue. The Club is doing everything possible to help make him comfortable and happy. We just hope he says yes.”

With El Clasico in less than a month, questions about the eternal rivalry between Barça and Real Madrid appeared in the interview. The President agreed that “there were maybe just a few too many meetings” at the end of last season, but at the same time he insisted that those games “are always special.” Rosell also underlined that “what we want is to be able to talk about football – but it needs to stay on the pitch, we really don’t like it when things go beyond that.”

Speaking about the Spanish La Liga, he suggested that it should be reduced from 20 to 18, and then 16 teams: “the dates that would free up would then be filled by extra Champions League games,” with the aim to double the number of teams involved and “bring in income that we would lose with a smaller domestic league.” Rosell also underlined that once the dates are liberated, these dates are not for the national federations. “The dates are for the clubs to organise friendly games or to increase the European competitions,” he added. “We want to have the Champions League under the umbrella of UEFA, but we also want UEFA to hear our demands, what the European Club Association is asking,” he said. He made it clear that ECA asks “for more revenue. We are asking for governance, transparency, insurance.”

Rosell said the ECA’s current memorandum of understanding with UEFA is valid until 2014, with a new agreement under discussion. “If this (a new memorandum) doesn’t happen, then the worst case scenario is that we will go away from UEFA,” warned Rosell. He also shared his opinion that FIFA and UEFA should pay players’ wages during international tournaments, “that could happen in the near future because we don’t think it’s fair that we pay the salaries and they use our players and they get income using our players.”

The President of FC Barcelona once again shared his satisfaction with the deal with Qatar Sports Investments. “It’s the biggest selling sports shirt of all time. It’s great to walk down the streets in Qatar or its neighbours and see everyone wearing a Barça shirt, especially the kids – more and more of them are becoming Barça fans and want to be players like Messi, Xavi or Iniesta. Our aim is to become the Club of all the world’s children.”

Jonathan Dos Santos (21) wird seinen Vertrag bis 2014/15 verlängern. Für mich etwas überraschend. Kommt er doch bei der ersten nur selten zum Zug und das wird sich wohl auch nicht so schnell ändern. Beim B-Team hingegen ist er Leistungsträger...

Aber dennoch eine gute Entscheidung vom Klub. Vl platzt ihm ja der Knoten und vor allem kann man nun Ablöse (die wurde zwar auf utopischen 30 Mio. festgesetzt) verlangen, wenn ihn ein Klub verpflichten will. Zuletzt wurden die Verträge meist nicht frühzeitig verlängert und dann musste man die Spieler ablösefrei ziehen lassen (Botia, Nolito etc.)
