THE urgent need for an executioner in the Cranes' attack was again vividly shown in a slim victory over Niger yesterday. If there was a team Uganda had to beat convincingly to avoid the last minute calculations reminiscent of the last qualifiers, it had to be Niger.

Uganda again had its strikers to blame. The hosts on several occasions had the visitors on the ropes but lacked that crucial last touch that makes the difference in football.

At the end of the day, skipper Ibrahim Sekagya had to step forward from his sweeper's role to salvage his side with a well placed header. Uganda should actually count itself lucky given that Sekagya in the process sustained an injury that shortly afterwards resulted in his substitution.

Where are the goal scorers

If Uganda has coaches who are worth their salt, then this is the time they earned their pay by not only spotting, but also grooming strikers to emulate the likes of Ali Kitonsa, Polly Ouma, Frank Kyazze, Issa Ssekatawa, Magid Musisi or Andrew Mukasa.

The Cranes' twin attack of Eguene Sseppuuya, David Obua and later Caeser Okhuti on Saturday did many of the things required of strikers except placing the ball in the net.

The towering Sseppuuya should be credited for casting a spell of fear on Niger. The West Africans always had two defenders in deployment to keep him at bay.

But that was about all he did. If he was a true marksman, he should have converted at least one of the three clear chances that came his way.

But even with the team's striking inadequacies, the technical team failed to make the best of the limited resources available.

Laszlo Csaba's decision to have Obua and Sseppuuya as his twin strikers was wrong. Obua, who is most comfortable as a roving midfielder, was wasted.

With Abubaker Tabula playing Obua's usual role, Csaba should have started the Kaizer Chiefs player on the bench and instead fielded Geoffrey Sserunkuma or Ceaser Okhuti.

Other critics were even of the view that Csaba should have gone in for a full scale attack in a 4-3-3 formation with strikers Okuti, Sserunkuma and Sseppuuya.

There was also need for more adventurism right from defence. This would have called for more attack minded fullbacks. But Simeon Masaba and Nestroy Kizito rarely crossed the half way line.

Overlapping fullbacks would have resulted in more chances created from the wings. This, would have in turn had Tabula and Joseph Kabagambe proceeding upfront to boost Sseppuuya who was in most cases all alone.

In the midfield, it might be time Noah "Babadi" Kasule's performance was reviewed. At no point did the Armenia-based player want to take on any responsibility.

So it was always either a back or square pass from him to the nearest player. It was an attitude that shouted out: "It had better be someone else to make the mistake."

A midfielder is not supposed to merely play safe, but add value to the game by creating opportunities. That's exactly what the likes of Moses Nsereko and Francis Kulabigwo are best remembered for.

The aerial game is another area that also urgently requires attention. Save for defenders like Sekagya and Timothy Batabaire, the Ugandan side is very wanting when it comes to heading.

Janko ist meiner Meinung nach in jeder Form über Kienast zu stellen.

Ich lasse mich gerne bei der EM anders überzeugen.

Ich denke im Übrigen nicht, dass das Duell im ÖFB Team Janko gegen Kienast lautete, sondern vielmehr Janko gegen sich selbst und er war eben noch nicht wieer so weit.

Wir werden Marc aber sicher noch einige male im ÖFB Team zu sehen bekommen!

so sehe ich das auch. man hat auch im frühjahr gesehen dass janko noch die spritzigkeit und explosivität gefehlt hat, trotzdem konnte er einige male netzen.

man sollte aber kienast nicht unterschätzen - so schlecht ist der nicht, wie alle glauben. wenn nichts unerwartetes geschieht werden wir janko im verlauf der wm quali einige male sehen.

ich bin da ganz deiner meinung, wobei mich die nominierung von kienast nach seinem tor nicht überrascht hat. ich hätt halt auf patocka zugunsten von maierhofer/kanko verzichtet, aber wie du richtig sagst, muß er teamchef seinen kopf dafür hinhalten. ich bin schon extrem nervös und gespannt!

in diesem sinne: ich wünsche allen in diesem forum alles gute für die em, mögen wir alle überraschen.

hat aber fahrt in spiel der schweiz gebracht der vola, und auch gleich die gelbe abgeholt. mal sehen wie er sich schlägt, wird sicher öfter kommen jetzt, wo frei verletzt ist

Enough of the euphoria. Let’s get back to the drawing board.

No doubt Cranes have given themselves a decent chance of reaching Angola 2010.

The 0-0 draw with Group 3’s strongest team was a fabulous result. But Cranes cannot afford another goalless stalemate away from home.

Last year, Uganda traveled to Niger and dominated the Mena en route to a 0-0 draw that would return to haunt the country once Geoffrey Massa and everyone fired blanks in Lesotho.

Both draws were played without inspirational skipper Ibrahim Sekagya. The Red Bull Salzburg defender is a class act when available.

Had he played either in Niger or Lesotho, Uganda Cranes would have competed at Ghana 2008.

Sekagya was ruled out of the Benin match with injury and a Cranes team without Nestory Kizito conspired to receive a 4-1 thrashing in Cotonou.

Sekagya and Kizito add experience, poise, balance and steel to the national team. Last year in Abeokuta, Cranes was unfazed by Nigeria’s legion of multi-millionaire football stars throughout the 90 minutes and only a dim-witted refereeing decision denied Uganda at least a valuable away point.

Evidently, that gallant 1-0 defeat would have been a hammering if Uganda had travelled without Kizito and Sekagya. Yesterday, both players combined admirably to frustrate Angola’s famed attack in Luanda.

And when ecstasy settles, Uganda Cranes will have to rectify an acute scoring problem. There is zero chance of Uganda qualifying for the next round without goals in Niger and at home to Benin.

The 3-1 walloping of Angola masked Uganda’s blatant dearth of a goal scorer and it would be reckless to ignore the fact that Cranes’ goals remain a fundamental problem.

bei sekagya sieht man einfach, dass er ein besonderer spieler ist. konnte mmn. sein ganzes potential in salzburg noch nicht entfalten da

a) seine partner in der IV letzte saison unterdurchschnittlich (für szbg. verhältnisse) waren (meyer, jorge vargas, miyamoto) und

b) in der IV letzte saison bei salzburg zuviel rotiert wurde!

mit opdam bin ich zuversichtlich das wir endlich ein IV duo haben, das im uefa cup auch bestehen kann und vorallem die nötige coolness besitzt (welche uns seit dem abgang von linke abgeht)

mit opdam kommt noch dazu ein zweiter sehr fairer spieler (sekagya mmn. der fairste IV der bliga) was auch im angesicht dessen, das wir keine kartenprobleme bekommen, gut sein wird.

mit jorge "zutret" "raunz" "ellbogen" "bodycheck" vargas war das ja immer gefährlich.

Djordje Rakic wurde in Serbiens Olympia-Kader einberufen. Trainer Miroslav Djukic hätte auch Sasa Ilic gerne dabei und wird versuchen von Red Bull eine Erlaubnis einzuholen.
