Kaladze admits career fears

Milan defender Kakha Kaladze admits he hesitated before surgery amid fears it would end his career. “I hope to be back in four or five months.”

The Georgian international has been struggling with a recurring knee problem for several years now and finally took the plunge.

“I am very happy to have had the surgery, because lately it had become extremely difficult to play in these conditions,” he told Telelombardia.

“We didn’t know if after the operation I could continue my playing career or not, so it was very difficult to make this decision.

“I hope to be back in four or five months, better than ever.”

Kaladze turned 31 last week and has been playing for the Rossoneri since 2000-01, before then representing Dynamo Kiev and Dynamo Tbilisi.

Season over for Abbiati

It has been confirmed that Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati will need surgery on his knee and will be out for the rest of the season.

The former Torino custodian had to be stretchered off in agony after 13 minutes of Milan's demolition of Siena.

Abbiati accidentally collided with teammate Giuseppe Favalli and ruptured ligaments in his right knee.

“Milan would like to communicate that Abbiati saw Professor Marco Martens in Antwerp.

“The tests undertaken have revealed the extent of his injury and he will now need two or three weeks of rehabilitation before returning to Belgium for surgery.”

Abbiati is expected to return to action at the start of next season, leaving Nelson Dida to take over the gloves during the current campaign.

This is the passage of the interview reserved in particular about Milan: "Kaka is not for sale. Our fans must be serene. Milan do not need more reinforcements than other teams. Apart from the strong Thiago Silva, another defender will arrive. And anyway, Milan will be careful about the opportunities which will be present."

MILAN - Today, 19 March 2009, it's Fathers' Day. A day started in a truly nice and pleasant way by mrs. Gabriella, wife of Nesta, who with an affectionate message sent her best wishes to her husband Alessandro, father of Tommaso and Sofia.

But already in the early hours today, before reaching the Rossoneri's Sporting Center for the afternoon training, a lot of dads among the Rossoneri squad and staff received the best wishes from their children. Carlo Ancelotti is father of Davide and Katia. Other rightly celebrated fathers are Mauro Tassotti, Filippo Galli, Villiam Vecchi, Valerio Fiori (his sons Daniele and Emanuele play with Milan's Giovanissimi youth sector), the responsible of the preparators Daniele Tognaccini, club doctor Massimo Manara, team manager Vittorio Mentana. In these days Silvano Ramaccioni, who has spent a lifetime at Milan, has also become a grandfather. Ramaccioni's son Francesco, married to Chiara, became the father of Carolina.

Then, of course, the players. The three Rossoneri goalkeepers are all fathers: Christian Abbiati, Nelson Dida and Zeljko Kalac. Not to mention Captain Maldini (father of Christian and Daniel) and the other members of our squad, from Jankulovski to Bonera, from Antonini to Emerson, from Gattuso to Pirlo, from Beckham to two almost-fathers like Kaladze and Massimo Ambrosini whose wives are expecting.

The Fathers' Day best wishes also came for Clarence Seedorf, Ricardo Kakà, Andriy Shevchenko and Tabarè Viudez. The younger players in the Rossoneri's dressing room, including Alexandre Pato, who are not parents yet, sent their best wishes to their own fathers.

Galliani attacked by Ultras

Napoli Ultras attacked Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani and trashed his car as he left the San Paolo last night.

Galliani had just watched Milan draw 0-0 with Napoli and was on his way to the airport when his car was stopped by around 50 Ultras.

The Ultras refused to let him pass and began to throw stones at his car, breaking a window and prompting his police escort to call for back up.

Fears for Galliani's safety increased when the car got a puncture, leaving it even more exposed to attacks.

Galliani did reach the airport in time, though. He boarded the plane chartered by Milan and discussed the game with Carlo Ancelotti.

Napoli fans were aggrieved when Marek Hamsik had a valid goal disallowed for offside after 37 minutes.

Tensions rose throughout the game and a Molotov cocktail was thrown at Milan fans. Luckily it failed to explode.

Milan meet with Sheikh

Milan yesterday played host to Sheikh Al Maktoum, the son of the Emir of Dubai, but talk of a takeover is premature, according to Il Corriere della Sera.

Al Maktoum is reportedly interested in sponsoring Milan, as the Rossoneri's current £10m deal with Bwin expires at the end of next season.

If an agreement is reached, Milan, like Arsenal and Hamburg, will be seen wearing the Fly Emirates logo on their shirts.

According to Il Corriere della Sera, Al Maktoum is willing to pay the Rossoneri a lucrative £20m for a four-year sponsorship deal with the option of a fifth written into the terms of the contract.

The Italian Press believe the deal will not stop there, though, with Al Maktoum reportedly ready to become a major shareholder in the club.

Milan are in desperate need of new capital and - on top of limiting their transfer spending this summer - will try to enforce a salary cap, bringing wages down 30 per cent.

Honorary President Silvio Berlusconi can no longer be seen spending large amounts of money on Milan in his position as Italy Prime Minister.
