Österreichs Teamstürmer Christoph Brandner erzielt seinen vierten Treffer für die Houston Aeros in der American Hockey League (AHL).

Der Steirer trifft bei der 3:6-Niederlage des Titelverteidigers bei den Chicago Wolves in der 56. Minute zum Endstand. Die Aeros sind aus den Playoff-Plätzen der Western Conference gerutscht.

Teamtorhüter Bernd Brückler feiert für die University of Wisconsin sein 2. Shutout. Der Steirer parierte beim 3:0-Heimsieg vor über 15.000 Zuschauern alle 25 Torschüsse.

Pöck stock rising with Minutemen ready for March

He touched down this week in Boston for the last road game. Then heads 90 miles west to Amherst, Mass., referred to by The New York Times as one of the nation's "Ten Best College Towns."

Herbert Pöck (pronounced "poke") traveled from Austria to watch his son play his final two regular-season games for the University of Massachusetts. Next week begins the post-season run for the Minutemen, and the career finale for their 6-foot-1, 208-pound blue-line anchor -- one of college hockey's most sought-after free agents come July 1. The elder Pöck is one of the 10 best players in Austrian National Team history, the team he now coaches. Thomas Pöck is one of the 10 best seniors in college hockey and, arguably, the best defenseman in all the land.

"Everything I learned in hockey," said Pöck, "was definitely from my dad. He's played professionally in Europe on the Austrian National Team and three Olympics. He's definitely a big influence on me and he's coming out for the last two games. We still talk a lot about hockey."

That influence shows. Pöck leads the nation in scoring by a defenseman (14 goals, 19 assists) and is among the top 10 - and the only defenseman - with nine power-play goals/ He's closing in on 100 points at UMass after 123 games (42-52-94) and leads all Minutemen in all offensive categories this season. Pöck has set or tied 11 school records, was an All-America Candidate last season and the team captain is a likely Hobey Baker finalist in the weeks ahead.

The plethora of Pöck positives begin with fourth-year coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, who landed behind the UMass bench in 2000-01 after nine successful years at Princeton -- the same year that Pöck arrived on it. "He's wise way beyond his years," said Cahoon about his prized defenseman who developed his skills as a forward for the Klagenfurt (Austria) Athletic Club. "He's lived an international life, traveling all over the world. He speaks two languages fluently, and probably bits and pieces of two or three others. You're dealing with a mature young man and that makes all the difference in dealing with the team.

"I've been with some players (as an assistant at BU,)" said Cahoon. "(Tony) Amonte, (Shawn) McEachern and (Keith) Tkachuk -- they were pretty good. I had Jeff Halpern and Syl Apps at Princeton and they were pretty special kids also. And Thomas has done as much for this team as any other player did for their team."

Last season, Pöck did even more for UMass when he made the smooth transition from forward to the blue line with a 10-game experiment as the season began. He has 60 points since. "We brought him back on defense because of how well he brings the puck up," said steady sophomore goaltender Gabe Winer. "He dominates the play out there. His puck skills are second to none," assesses Cahoon, "and his vision is terrific. He sees everything on the ice. Watch him collect the puck and then outlet it - it's always going to someone that's wide open. It's his vision and ability to move the puck around the rink. He makes other people better."

"I'm a defenseman now - definitely," said Pöck. "In the future, this is my position, this is where I'll be."

"Tommy is the best player I've seen in college hockey," said rock-solid senior defenseman Nick Kuiper. "I have a lot of friends that I grew up with who are playing in the NHL like (Calgary's) Matt Lombardi, and Tommy's not far off. He's got the ability, and he's strong enough and mentally strong enough for the next level. He's a real confident person and the team feeds off that confidence."

Kuiper, the Warner brothers -- Mike and Tim -- and junior Greg Mauldin, who leads the forwards in scoring, are Pöck's roommates. "With his skating ability and vision, he's able to do that and make life easier for the wings," said Mauldin, a Columbus draft pick. "Nobody can control like he can. He does it all back there. And I'm lucky, I get to live with him and hang out a lot. There's five of us in the house and it's fun to have him around."

"We've been best friends since freshman year," said Mike Warner. "I don't speak Austrian, but I was Tommy's English teacher freshman year. He's a really smart kid so he picked it up right away. We've been like brothers. We even had a few of the same girlfriends at different times. That's kept things interesting. I know in June it ends, and we'll stay in touch, but it's not going to be the same."

Cahoon and his band of Minutemen -- that includes Craig MacDonald, Stephen Werner, Tim Vitek and Chris Capraro up front, and Sean Regan, Marvin Degon, Dusty Demianiuk and Jeff Lang on the blue line -- plan to keep things very interesting the next few weeks. UMass came within a goal of playing in the Hockey East Tournament championship game last year with a 5-4 loss to New Hampshire in the semifinal at Boston's sold-out FleetCenter, the site of this year's Frozen Four. UNH played in the national title game against Minnesota; UMass has never played on the national stage.

At 16-9-6, 12-7-3 Hockey East, the Minutemen will finish at the top of Hockey East among Top-10 powerhouses Boston College, Maine and New Hampshire. That earns a first-ever home ice next weekend for the best-of-three quarterfinals of the Hockey East playoffs. UMass needs to run the table the next two weekends to assure the NCAA invite that goes to each conference's tournament champion. Otherwise, they sit on the bubble until the final 16 are announced for postseason play. "The mentality now is we're suppose to win," said Pöck. "I like that mentality. I just want to leave them with working hard."

"No. 71 is a pivotal figure," said Cahoon. "Tommy knows, as all three seniors, exactly what to do. He will do a great job of seeing that we give it a good effort." How do you say "free agent" in Austrian? "He's getting a lot of looks from NHL teams," said Mauldin. "He's going to get some offers."

"I don't think we have those words in Europe or in Austria for that," said Pöck. "I'm excited about seeing what's out there. But there's still a lot of hockey left here."

Beim Spiel Ottawa - Philadelphia gab es einen neuen NHL-Rekord: 419 Strafminuten in einer Partie! Die Gründe waren 5 Massenschlägereien in den letzten zwei Spiel Minuten. Zum Schluss hatten die Senators nur noch 6 Spieler bzw. die Flyers nur noch 7 Spieler zur Verfügung.

Nebenbei: Die Flyers gewannen mit 5:3

Hobey Baker Top Ten Announcements

The Hobey Baker Foundation announces the Top Ten Finalists for the 2004 Hobey Baker Award, which is presented annually to the top hockey player in college hockey. Criteria that is considered is strength of character on and off the ice, along with scholastic achievements and sportsmanship. The 2004 players chosen for this year’s Top Ten are: Keith Ballard, University of Minnesota; Brandon Bochenski, University of North Dakota; Yann Denis, Brown University; Derek Edwardson, Miami of Ohio; Junior Lessard, University of Minnesota Duluth; Zach Parise, University of North Dakota; Thomas Pöck, University of Massachusetts-Amherst; Steve Saviano, University of New Hampshire; Jim Slater, Michigan State University; Tony Voce, Boston College.

The next phase of the award will be the announcement of the Hobey Hat Trick (Final 3) candidates, which will be announced March 31, 2004, followed by the announcement of the 2004 Hobey Baker Award winner at the Frozen Four in Boston on April 9, 2004 at 2:30 pm ET.

Keith Ballard - University of Minnesota - Junior - Defense

Keith is second in the nation in points by a defensemen and 11th in the WCHA among all players with 1.03 points per game; he is also tied for 5th in the nation and second in the WCHA with five game-winning goals. Keith was picked as WCHA Defensive Player of the Week in November and was named Inside College Hockey Player of the Week in February. In 2002-03 he received the honor of being named to the WCHA All-Academic Team. Keith was drafted 11th overall by Buffalo in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft (his rights now belong to Phoenix).

Zach Parise – Universiy of North Dakota - Senior - Forward

Faribault, Minn.

Zach is the only returning Hobey Baker finalist in this year’s crop of players. He ranks third in the NCAA in scoring with an average of 1.42 points per game. Zach currently is 68th on the UND’s all-time scoring list with 102 points in only 70 games. Zach took time off this season to compete on Team USA in the 2004 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships where he was named the Tournament MVP after leading the tournament in scoring. He was twice named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Zach was drafted 17th overall by New Jersey in the NHL where his father J.P. played for 13 seasons.

Thomas Pöck - University of Massachusetts-Amherst - Senior - Defense

Thomas is ranked first among the nations’ defensemen in three categories: 38 points, 15 goals, and 23 assists. He was selected to the InsideCollegeHockey.com All-European team. Thomas was awarded the Hockey East player of the Month in November, along with earning honors as Player of the Week twice this season, and named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week once. Another national honor came when Thomas was awarded Defenseman of the Year by InsideCollegeHockey.com, and Hockey East Player of the Year by the same publication. Thomas is not the only family member to receive hockey honors, his father Herbert has played in three different Olympics for the Austrian National Team and was named the head coach in 2002 of the same team.

Österreichs Eishockey hat seit Dienstag einen dritten NHL-Spieler. Thomas Pöck feierte in der National Hockey League (NHL) ein überraschendes und sensationelles Debüt für die New York Rangers.

Der 23-jährige Kärntner, der erst wenige Stunden davor bei den Rangers einen Zweijahresvertrag unterschrieben hatte, erzielte gleich in seinem ersten NHL-Spiel ein Tor.

Der Verteidiger traf bei der 2:5-Niederlage vor 17.900 Zuschauern im New Yorker Madison Square Garden in der 54. Minute zum 2:5-Endstand. Den anderen Treffer der Rangers erzielte Superstar Jaromir Jagr.

Dritter Österreicher in der NHL

"Wenn du aufwächst, träumst du von der NHL. Wenn du dein erstes NHL-Tor erzielst, bist du so glücklich", erklärte Pöck, der Sohn von ÖEHV-Teamchef Herbert Pöck.

Vor Pöck junior waren nur Torhüter Reinhard Divis und Stürmer Christoph Brandner zu NHL-Einsätzen gekommen. Divis war am 7. April 2002 im Dress der St. Louis Blues der erste, Brandner absolvierte im Trikot der Minnesota Wild am 8. Oktober 2003 sein erstes NHL-Spiel.

Brandner hatte am 12. Oktober des Vorjahres auch als erster Österreicher einen Treffer in der stärksten Eishockey-Liga der Welt erzielt.

Blitz-Transfer

Am Dienstag folgte Pöck als zweiter Torschütze nach einem Transfer, der innerhalb weniger Stunden abgewickelt worden war.

"Es ist alles so blitzschnell gegangen. 'Tommy' hat zu Mittag einen Anruf von seinem Agenten bekommen, dass der Vertrag vorliegt. Er wurde von einem Freund in drei Stunden nach New York gebracht, unterschrieb und hat sich dann gleich umgezogen. Da ist keine Zeit geblieben, um nachzudenken", erklärte Herbert Pöck.

Wenig später stand "Tommy" insgesamt 14:25 Minuten für die Rangers auf dem Eis, kam im Powerplay und in Unterzahl zum Einsatz und gab drei Torschüsse ab, wobei der letzte passte.

Vom Stürmer zum Verteidiger

Pöck hatte sich den Vertrag durch hervorragende Spiele für die University of Massachusetts-Amherst in der US-College-League erspielt. Pöck war in der Vorsaison von Stürmer auf Verteidiger umfunktioniert worden und schlug auf seiner neuen Position voll ein.

In der abgelaufenen Saison war er mit 16 Toren und 25 Assists in 37 Spielen der punktbeste Verteidiger der gesamten Liga, wurde ins All-Star-Team von Hockey East gewählt und ist einer von zehn Kandidaten für den "Hobey Baker-Award" für den besten Spieler der Liga.

"Es kann fast nicht besser laufen", meinte Pöck senior zur Leistung seines Sohnes.

Freie Auswahl unter Angeboten

Da Thomas Pöck als Stürmer im NHL-Draft keine Berücksichtigung gefunden hatte, konnte er nun unter allen Angeboten frei wählen. Davon gab es genug, mehr als zehn schriftliche.

Pöck entschied sich schließlich für die Rangers, das teuerste Team der Liga. Trotzdem haben sie aber zum siebenten Mal in Folge das Play-off verpasst.

Nächstes Spiel am Donnerstag

Viel Zeit zum Nachdenken hat Pöck nicht, am Donnerstag steht die nächste Partie gegen die Nashville Predators auf dem Programm, vielleicht mit Herbert Pöck als Zuschauer ("Wenn ich einen Flug bekomme, bin ich drüben").

Thomas Pöck wird noch die ausstehenden fünf Spiele für die Rangers bestreiten, dann ins Farmteam Hartford Wolf Pack in die American Hockey League (AHL) wechseln und mit dem Wolf Pack das AHL-Play-off bestreiten.

Absolviert Pöck insgesamt noch in dieser Saison zehn Spiele, gilt sein erstes Vertragsjahr als absolviert, erklärte Vater Pöck.

Kein Start bei WM geplant

Bei der Weltmeisterschaft ab 24. April in Tschechien wird Pöck senior auf Pöck junior daher wohl verzichten müssen.

Brandner, der seit Jänner im Farm-Team der Wild bei den Houston Aeros spielt, wird in Prag erwartet, Divis kommt, wenn St. Louis das Play-off verpasst oder in der ersten Runde ausscheidet.

wollte nur mitteilen dass heute im letzten spiel der ehc basel leider mit einer 4:5 niederlage nach verlängerung in die 2. höchste liga abgestiegen ist. der ehc basel ist erst diese saison nach 40 jahren wieder einmal in die höchste liga aufgestiegen.

in basel wurde auch einen topmoderne eishalle gebaut.

das einzige erfreuliche war heute wohl die zuschauerzahl 6'612, jedoch waren die tickets heute extra günstig und kosteten nur gerade 7 €.

bern spielte heute übrigens vor 14'251 Zuschauer....der zuschauerschnitt ist auch etwa in dieser höhe!

Thomas Pöck liefterte in seinem zweiten NHL Spiel einen Assist. Er legte beim 2:4 seiner NY Rangers gegen die Nashville Predators das zwischenzeitliche 1:1 durch Rachunek auf.

Pöck war 19:17 min. auf dem Eis.
