Kuyt flying high with Anfield plea

Jun 10 2005

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez will spend the weekend reevaluating his striking options after Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt begged the Anfield boss to launch a bid.

Benitez's is working with a budget of £30m as he prepares a major overhaul of his squad, and he'll make numerous signings over the next fortnight.

Chief executive Rick Parry returns from an Academy coaching trip to Barbados today and it promises to be a pivotal weekend at Anfield when he and Benitez meet to finalise their transfer plans.

Kuyt has been a long-term target for Benitez, but having discovered the Reds have turned their attention to Southampton's Peter Crouch, the 24-year-old Dutchman said: "I would really want to go to Liverpool. It's a great club and I hope I can play for them.

"Liverpool have contacted Feyenoord but no bids have been made."

Benitez's problem is an initial £10m valuation which would swallow a third of his summer budget.

The Reds boss switched towards Crouch, hoping he could seal a deal for around £5m.

However, with Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe insisting Crouch won't leave for less than £7m, and reports in Holland suggesting Feyenoord may now accept £8m for Kuyt, it's clear there is more negotiating still to be done before Benitez makes his next move.

There was talk of Jerzy Dudek returning to Holland as part of a deal for Kuyt, but the Pole has stated he wants to stay and fight for his place.

The recent sacking of Ruud Gullit has further complicated matters.

Dutch media have printed an expected squad list for Feyenoord next season with Kuyt a notable absentee.

Newcastle are also being strongly linked with the player, although if Liverpool made a bid there's no doubt they'd be favourites to capture him.

With the round of international fixtures over, events should move quicker over the next seven days.

Crouch has clearly emerged as Benitez's top target over the past week, but the Spaniard won't be held to ransom by the relegated south coast club.

The manager's trump card is both strikers' determination to move to the European Champions.

Kuyt has now made his feelings public, while Crouch has also privately set his heart on a move north.

Benitez, meanwhile, has welcomed Didi Hamann's decision to pen a new one-year contract.

"I'm delighted we have an agreement with Didi," said Benitez.

"He is a very important player for us."

Reds enquire about Gallas

http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.a...l=football_home

Liverpool are lining up an audacious bid to lure William Gallas from Chelsea.

The French central defender enjoyed a fine season last time around but was vocal in expressing his unhappiness at being forced to play out of position at left back for much of the campaign.

With Chelsea having signed Asier Del Horno, and Wayne Bridge making good progress in his return from injury, Gallas seems unlikely to be asked to perform that role next term, but faces stiff competition to claim a place in the heart of The Blues' rearguard.

John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho appear to be Jose Mourinho's preferred central defensive partnership and, with Robert Huth also waiting in the wings, Gallas could ]find a regular starting spot hard to claim.

Arsenal were reported to be tracking the France international, but his agent Pierre Frelot has now revealed that it is Liverpool and Barcelona who are currently chasing his client.

"It's true Liverpool and Barcelona have asked about William," Frelot told the News of the World.

"But there is no concrete offer and Chelsea have not said they want to sell."

Although Mourinho is bound to be reluctant to let the former Marseille star move on, a £6 million offer might force the Portuguese coach to think about cashing in on a player who will not be happy with a bit-part role next season.

Liverpool are in the market for a new centre back and have been strongly linked with Real Zaragoza's Argentine star Gabriel Milito.

However, with Gallas's future at Stamford Bridge far from certain, boss Rafa Benitez is ready to try to land a player who has already proved his class at Premiership level.

Pass And Move - It's The Liverpool Groove

Buy, Bye

Every Premiership side's transfer dealings this summer, broken down team-by-team.

Sunday July 10, 2005

The Observer

Arsenal

Arsene Wenger: 'I will win back our place at the top of the table by putting into action plans I've been working on. They include recruiting two world-class players.'

In: Aleksander Hleb (Stuttgart, £10m), Armand Traore (Monaco, undisc).

Out: Jermaine Pennant (Birmingham, £500k rising to £3m), Edu (Valencia, free), Stuart Taylor (Aston Villa, undisc), Adam Birchall (Mansfield, free), Ben Gill (Watford, free), Chris Wright (Boston, free), Olafur Ingi Skulason Brentford, free), Daniel Karbassiyoon (Burnley, free), Frankie Simek released), Jordan Fowler (released).

Article continues

Wanted: While Arsenal fend off Juventus's and Real Madrid's moves for Patrick Vieira, reports in Spain claim Wenger will soon seal a £10m deal for Sevilla's Julio Baptista - 'The Beast' - who dreams of a bigger club and says: 'I want to go to England.' Arsenal are also close to a £350k deal with Atalanta for 17-year-old keeper Vito Mannone.

Aston Villa

David O'Leary: 'I gave the board my list and they've delivered four already. I'm delighted with the way things have gone.'

In: Aaron Hughes (Newcastle, £1.5m), Kevin Phillips (Southampton, £1m), Patrik Berger (Portsmouth, free), Stuart Taylor (Arsenal, undisc).

Out: Thomas Hitzlsperger (Stuttgart), Stephen Cooke (Bournemouth), Ashley Edkins (Boston), Stefan Moore (QPR), Kyle Nix (Sheff Utd, all free) Vaclav Drobny (Strasbourg, loan ret), Carlton Cole (Chelsea, loan ret).

Wanted: O'Leary has denied links with a string of midfielders, including Steed Malbranque and Lee Bowyer, but Everton's Alan Stubbs is still a target and a £7m bid for Man City's Sylvain Distin is said to be imminent. The club could face a struggle to hold on to some current players - Ulises la Cruz is 'flattered' by links with Chilean side Colo Colo and Mathieu Berson has renewed his 'come and get me' plea to the rest of Europe. But Jlloyd Samuel says he's staying. 'I'll be here as long as possible.'

Birmingham:

David Gold (chairman): 'This is one of the best squads this club has ever had. There are grounds for optimism. With this squad we can look for a European place.'

In: Mehdi Nafti (Racing Santander, undisc), Mikael Forssell (Chelsea, 3m), Jermaine Pennant (Arsenal, £500k rising to £3m).

Out: Ian Bennett (Leeds, free), Salif Diao (Liverpool, loan ret), Dwight Yorke (Sydney, free).

Wanted: After missing out on Christian Vieri to Milan, City hope to resolve the dispute with Deportivo La Coruna over last season's loan star Walter Pandiani. One likely signing is Greece midfielder Angelos Basinas. Basinas agreed terms with Steve Bruce last week, but the deal is on hold after a late intervention by Marseille. Wigan's Jimmy Bullard is also on the list after delaying contract talks, but Alkmaar have increased the price of midfielder Denny Landzaat from £2m to £6m.

Bolton

Sam Allardyce: 'Our rivals are spending big and that makes it more difficult for us. It's hard to operate for ever in the short-term-deal world - there are no real loan bargains any more.'

In: El-Hadji Diouf (Liverpool, undisc), Ali Al-Habsi (Lyn Oslo, undisc).

Out: Anthony Barness (Plymouth, free), Vincent Candela (loan ret), Ricky Shakes (Swindon, free), Jason Talbot (Mansfield, free), Charlie Comyn-Platt (released), Fernando Hierro (retired), Julio Cesar released), Florent Laville (released), Kevin Poole (released).

Wanted: Allardyce is making approaches for two defenders, Lazio's Fernando Couto and Greece international Sotirios Kyrgiakos - and he's still hoping to beat Blackburn to Collins Mbesuma - 'a prolific goalscorer who has fantastic season in South Africa'. Another loan deal, for Lens midfielder Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye, should be confirmed this week, while Racing Santander midfielder Fernando Moran is said to be keen for a move.

Charlton

Richard Murray (chairman): 'The players we're going for are also interesting other clubs. We want to get five players in, so we are under a bit of pressure.'

In: Darren Bent (Ipswich, £2.5m rising to £3m), Darren Ambrose Newcastle, undisclosed), Kelly Youga (Lyon, free).

Out: Paul Konchesky (West Ham, £2m), Simon Royce (QPR, free), Sergio Leite Hull City, free), Stacy Long (Notts Co, free), Neil McCafferty (Rushden D, free), Mark Fish (released), Lekeladio Thanda (Bishops Stfd, free).

Wanted: Still high on Alan Curbishley's list is Damien Francis, but Norwich want higher offer. Charlton also want Manchester United's Chris Eagles on season-long loan and have approached Inter defender Gonzalo Sorondo and Oxford's Craig Davies. But Tottenham's Anthony Gardner is said have failed a medical. Some of the spending could be funded by the sale of Jason Euell, who is a target for Portsmouth and West Ham.

Chelsea

Jose Mourinho: 'The team is already good, and great clubs want to keep their best players.'

In: Asier Del Horno (Ath Bilbao, £8m), Hernan Crespo (AC Milan, loan ret) Jonas Elmer (Grasshopper, undisc), Scott Sinclair (Bristol R, undisc), Carlton Cole (Aston Villa, loan ret).

Out: Scott Parker (Newcastle, £6.5m), Mateja Kezman (Atletico Madrid 5.3m), Mikael Forssell (Birmingham, £3m), Juan Sebastian Veron Inter, loan), Sam Tillen (Brentford, free), Sebastian Kneissl released), Leonard Pidgeley (released), Steven Watt (released), Ben Hudell (released), Danny Woodards (released).

Wanted: After a string of failed bids for Adriano, David Trezeguet and Steven Gerrard, Man City's Shaun Wright-Phillips is top of the list - with a of £17m likely to tempt a sale. Other targets are Parma striker Alberto Gilardino, Real Betis winger Joaquin and Lyon's Michael Essien (still).

Blackburn:

Mark Hughes: 'In Craig [bellamy] we have a player who is one of the best of his type in Europe. I'm not bothered about his reputation.'

In: Craig Bellamy (Newcastle, £5m), Shefki Kuqi (Ipswich, free), Sergio Peter (Cercle Brugge, loan ret).

Out: Jon Stead (Sunderland, £1.8m), Jay Bothroyd (Perugia, loan ret), Craig Short (Sheffield Utd, free), Gavin Peers (Mansfield, free), Nils-Eric Johansson (Leicester, free).

Wanted: Hughes couldn't hide his relief after Blackburn's board found £5m plus wages for Bellamy. It followed a string of failed bids for strikers, including Besiktas star John Carew, whose agent said: 'If he leaves Besiktas, it will be for a big club, one playing in Europe.' Still on the list of possible summer deals, though, is a rival move for Bolton's top target, Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma, 21, and Andy Cole could return from Fulham.

Everton

David Moyes: 'I'm confident we'll have more new faces - at least a couple - hopefully before we go to Austria.'

In: Per Kroldrup (Udinese, £5m), Simon Davies (Spurs, £3.5m), John Ruddy (Cambridge U, £500k).

Out: Danny Fox (Walsall, free), Antony Gerrard (Walsall, free), Mikel Real Sociedad, loan ret), Alessandro Pistone (released), Alan Stubbs released), Steve Watson (West Brom, free), Eddy Bosnar (Dinamo Zagreb, free), Guillaume Plessis (released).

Wanted: Moyes was focusing on a deal for Valencia's defender Emiliano Moretti and midfielder Mohamed Sissoko - but the latter has rejoined old Rafa Benitez at Liverpool. Racing Santander forward Javi Guerrero on the list, as is a permanent deal for Mikel Arteta. A bid for Manchester United's Louis Saha, though, has failed. 'I had calls from Everton,' agent Ranko Stojic, 'but my answer is no - he stays at Manchester.'

Fulham Chris Coleman 'The chairman has enabled me to continue strengthening the squad and we've made some changes in the backroom staff. I'm looking forward to pre-season enormously.'

In: Heidar Helguson (Watford, £1.3m), Jaroslav Drobny (Panionios, undisc), Ahmed Elrich (Busan Icons, free), Elvis Hammond (RBC Roosendaal, loan ret), Facundo Sava (Celta Vigo, loan ret).

Out: Edwin Van der Sar (Man Utd, £2m), Sean Doherty (Den Haag, free), Ross Flitney (Barnet, free), Aaron Nowacki (St Albans, free), Jerome Bonnissel, Malik Buari, Lee Clark, Ross Flitney, Stuart Noble (all released).

Wanted: Top target is Sparta Prague's Czech Republic striker Tomas Jun, but the move could depend on Andy Cole's possible return to Blackburn, and on Steve Marlet's future: the £11.5m striker has spent two seasons on loan at Marseille but is struggling to agree a full-time switch. Luis Boa Morte has again denied reports he's looking for a move.

Liverpool Rafael Benitez: 'You will see a fitter, stronger Liverpool this season. There are many people at Real Madrid that we are aware of, but we really know our limitations.'

In: Jose Reina (Villarreal, undisc), Mohamed Sissoko (Valencia, £5m), Bolo Zenden (Middlesbrough, free), Salif Diao (Birmingham, loan ret), Gregory Vignal (Rangers, loan ret), Mark Gonzalez (Albacete, undisc), Antonio Barragan (Sevilla, free).

Out: El-Hadji Diouf (Bolton, undisc), Aliou Diarra (Lens, £2m), Vladimir Smicer (Bordeaux, free), Richie Partridge (St Patrick's Ath, free), Mauricio Pellegrino (Alaves, free), Paul Harrison, Patrice Luzi, Jon Otsemobor, Mark Smyth (all released), Bruno Cheyrou (Bordeaux, loan).

Wanted: Everton target Sissoko has joined the influx, Southampton's Peter Crouch set to be the subject of a renewed approach and there may be a bid for Chelsea's William Gallas. Luis Figo's move depends on Real Madrid's price.

Manchester City

Stuart Pearce: 'We have a great nucleus, but we need to add to that and will keep trying until the last day of August if necessary. The job is more difficult than if I was able to splash the cash.'

In: Kiki Musampa (Atletico Madrid, loan).

Out: Jonathan Macken (Crystal Palace, £750,000 rising to £1.1m), Christian Negouai (Standard Liege, free), Paul Bosvelt (Heerenveen, free), Kevin Stuhr-Ellegaard (Hertha Berlin, free), Steve McManaman (released).

Wanted: Pearce's spending depends entirely on Shaun Wright-Phillips: if he moves to Chelsea, part of the money will be available. If a deal is done, top of Pearce's spending list is Nantes striker Mamadou Bagayoko. Pearce has also checked on Perugia striker Jay Bothroyd and has been scouting abroad. 'The last few weeks I've been to Germany four times and France four times,' says Pearce. 'I may be going further afield shortly.'

Manchester United

David Gill (chief exec): 'The Glazer brothers understand that you can't guarantee success and that you have to give the manager the right tools to do the job.'

In: Park Ji-Sung (PSV Eindhoven, £4m), Edwin van der Sar (Fulham, £2m), Kieran Richardson (WBA, loan ret).

Out: Roy Carroll (West Ham, free), Ricardo (Osasuna, free), Eddie Johnson (Crewe, loan), Steven Hogg (Shrewsbury, free), David Poole (Yeovil, free), Daniel Nardiello (Barnsley, free), Ben Collett, Lee Lawrence, Paul Tierney, Ramon Calliste, Michael Stewart (all released).

Wanted: The lengthy pursuit of Ghana midfield star Michael Essien won't involve Louis Saha moving to Lyon as a makeweight. Rio Ferdinand's failure to sign a new contract is said to have prompted Real Madrid to offer Michael Owen in exchange, while Arsenal's pursuit of Sevilla's Julio Baptista may be disrupted by United. Midfielder Kleberson, meanwhile, wants to leave.

Middlesbrough

Steve McClaren: 'We want to avoid the situation we had last season when we wanted to rest senior players but didn't have cover for injuries. The fact that Emanuel Pogatetz can play either as a full-back or in the centre of defence is a big bonus.'

In: Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Portsmouth, £7.5m), Emanuel Pogatetz (Bayer Leverkusen, £3m).

Out: Bolo Zenden (Liverpool, free), Andrew Taylor (Bradford, undisc), Anthony Peacock (released), Andrew Davies (Derby, loan).

Wanted: With the big spending done, McClaren's focus has been on securing a new deal for Stewart Downing after rejecting a £6m bid for the winger from Tottenham. The 20-year-old England player has doubled his money to £20,000 a week in a five-year deal. Boro may move for Liverpool midfielder Salif Diao. 'We've had tentative discussions,' says agent Charles Collymore. 'Boro are the sort of club we're interested in.'

Newcastle

Graeme Souness: 'I just identify the players I want to sign and then it is up to the chairman to get the signatures sorted out. He is working very hard to make sure that happens.'

In: Scott Parker (Chelsea, £6.5m), Hugo Viana (Sporting Lisbon, loan ret).

Out: Craig Bellamy (Blackburn, £5m), Andy O'Brien (Portsmouth, £2m), Aaron Hughes (Aston Villa, £1.5m), Laurent Robert (Portsmouth, loan), Patrick Kluivert (Valencia, free), Darren Ambrose (Charlton, undisclosed), Jamie McClen (released).

Wanted: With Bellamy finally off the books, Souness is planning to rival Arsenal for their top target Julio Baptista. Sevilla have revealed that a second English club have entered the bidding. Another possible import from Spain is former Manchester United flop Diego Forlan, who had an excellent season with Villarreal. Daniel van Buyten, meanwhile, has pledged his future to Hamburg.

Portsmouth

Alain Perrin: 'Andy O'Brien is the type of English-style centre half we need. He can control a defence. I want five, six more players - English players or those who have played in the Premiership.'

In: Andy O'Brien (Newcastle, £2m), John Viafara (Once Caldas, £1.5m), Laurent Robert (Newcastle, loan).

Out: Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Middlesbro', £7.5m), Patrik Berger (A Villa, free), Richard Duffy (Coventry, loan), Steve Stone (Leeds, free), Rowan Vine (Luton, free), Shaun Cooper, Shaka Hislop, Hayden Foxe, Chris Clark (all released).

Wanted: The Italian press claim Perrin has opened talks for Reggina keeper Emanuele Belardi, 28. Norwich's Damien Francis remains a possible midfield recruit and Perrin is also looking for reinforcements up front: chairman Milan Mandaric will open talks with Chelsea this week over a £2m deal for Carlton Cole. Paulo Wanchope is tipped to arrive from Malaga on a free transfer, while Lomana LuaLua has pledged to stay.

Sunderland

Mick McCarthy: 'You don't need big money to build a good team. Kelvin Davis represents great value: he has terrific ability and at 28 is at the prime age for a keeper.'

In: Jon Stead (Blackburn, £1.8m), Kelvin Davis (Ipswich, £1.25m), Daryl Murphy (Waterford, £100k), Tommy Miller (Ipswich, free), Nyron Nosworthy (Gillingham, free), Martin Woods (Leeds, free).

Out: Mark Lynch (Hull), Marcus Stewart (Bristol C), Michael Ingham (Wrexham), Jeff Whitley (Cardiff), Richie Ryan (Scunthorpe, all free), Thomas Myhre, Brian Deane, Michael Bridges (all released).

Wanted: McCarthy has signed six and wants more. He's keen on Wigan midfielder Jimmy Bullard and Wolves striker Kenny Miller. 'Kenny's only got 12 months on his contract,' says Wolves boss Glenn Hoddle, 'but it'd be wrong to let him go cheaply.' Midfielder Sean Thornton, meanwhile, is off, perhaps to Palace or Malaga.

Tottenham

Martin Jol: 'I want to assure fans there is a lot to anticipate next season. We finished last season on an optimistic note and I am determined we stay that way.'

In: Wayne Routledge (Crystal Palace, £2m), Tom Huddlestone (Derby, £2.5m), Aaron Lennon (Leeds, £1m), Teemu Tainio (Auxerre, free), Paul Stalteri (Werder Bremen, undisc).

Out: Simon Davies (Everton, £3.5m), Rohan Ricketts (Wolves, free), Spase Dilevski (released).

Wanted: A £6m move for Boro's Stewart Downing has failed, while Palace won't sell Andy Johnson and Newcastle are blocking any approach for Jermaine Jenas. Also not happening is a £7m move for Senegal striker Mamadou Niang after he agreed a deal with Marseille. Still on Spurs' list are Iran midfielder Javad Nekounam and Colchester defender Greg Halford, while there's also a rumoured £12m bid for Arsenal target Julio Baptista.

West Brom

Jeremy Peace (chairman): 'We've talked about a senior squad of 24 players. There'll be a bit of thinning out, then we'll try to add to it. We have talked about bringing in up to five players.'

In: Darren Carter (Birmingham, £1.5m), Steve Watson (Everton, free), Chris Kirkland (Liverpool, loan)

Out: Rob Hulse (Leeds, £800k rising to £1.1m), Kieran Richardson (Man Utd, loan ret).

Wanted: Bryan Robson has denied he's looking to sell keeper Russell Hoult, despite landing Chris Kirkland on loan from Liverpool and chasing Stockport youngster James Spencer. 'Reports that I don't rate Russell are a load of rubbish. He's a very good goalkeeper. He's 32 and that's no age for a keeper.' Jason Koumas is bound for Cardiff, while Robson focuses on signing a striker. His bid for Palace's Andy Johnson was rejected last month. 'The area we are looking to strengthen now is centre-forward,' says Robson.

West Ham

Terence Brown, (chairman): 'We could repay £20m of debt but that would leave Alan Pardew nothing to spend. He's been given a budget of £20m in salaries and transfers so that he can strengthen the squad - and our next batch of kids will not leave as others have, providing we consolidate in the Premiership.'

In: Roy Carroll (Man Utd, free), Daniel Gabbidon, James Collins (both Cardiff, £3.2m combined), Paul Konchesky (Chartlon, £2m), Youssef Sofiane (Roda JC, loan ret).

Out: Rufus Brevett (Plymouth, free), Greg Pearson (Rushden & Diamonds, free), Sergei Rebrov (Dynamo Kiev, free), Andy Melville (released).

Wanted: Alan Pardew hopes to beat Blackburn to the signing of striker Benni McCarthy from Porto. He turned to McCarthy after seeing a cash bid for Southampton's Peter Crouch rejected. Pardew is also considering a £2m bid for Belenenses defender Pele, while Fredi Kanoute could return.

Wigan

Paul Jewell: 'It's been a tough summer in the transfer market, but I always knew it would be. We're on the phone constantly and I'm positive things will start to move very soon.'

In: Michael Pollitt (Rotherham, £200,000), Pascal Chimbonda (Bastia, undisclosed).

Out: Ian Breckin (Nottm Forest, £350k), Jason Jarrett (Norwich, free), Paul Mitchell (MK Dons, free).

Wanted: Jewell has called on frustrated fans to 'back my judgment' despite failing to bring in a significant signing since winning promotion until Friday's arrival of Bastia full-back Pascal Chimbonda. Even Bury striker Colin Kazim-Richards turned the Latics down, signing for Brighton instead. Striker Nathan Ellington is still refusing to sign a new deal. 'Nathan scores in double figures every season. The club's offer is not acceptable,' says his agent.
