L.A. Lakers 117, Boston 109

Kobe’s Comeback Bad News for Celtics

BOSTON, March 10 (Ticker) -- A surprise start for Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant meant a predictable end to the six-game winning streak of the Boston Celtics.

Bryant made an early return from a strained right shoulder and collected 18 points and 10 assists as the Lakers took a 117-109 victory over the Celtics.

Boston came in riding its longest winning streak of the season and hoped to continue its unlikely late-season playoff push against Los Angeles, which figured to be without Bryant.

The six-time All-Star guard re-injured his shoulder Friday and was feared to be out as long as a month. But Bryant did not go on the injured list and maintained he would return sooner rather than later.

"It's not going to be fully healed for the rest of the season," Bryant said. "But if I can go out there and help my teammates and help them get easy shots, I will. I felt that if I could move my shoulder, catch the ball with no problem and pass the ball with no problem and rebound with no problem, then why shouldn't I be playing? I wasn't restricted at all. I still had a full range of motion."

"We were assured that there was no damage that he could do to his shoulder. That's the big key," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "It's not like a dislocated shoulder. So that's good news. He's had some time off, so he has some live legs that can help us against the better offensive players that Boston has."

Wearing a protective harness-type shirt under his jersey, Bryant seemed somewhat affected by the injury as he made just 4-of-16 shots. But he was effective enough to play a team-high 40 minutes and get to the line 14 times, making 10.

"I felt OK. I felt all right," Bryant said. "I was ready to play. They trust me, so we went with it. (The doctor) did an excellent job covering the areas where I was sensitive. So if I got hit in any part of it, it wasn't going to affect me."

Bryant's return made things easier on Shaquille O'Neal, who had a dominant 28 points and 17 rebounds, and Gary Payton, who scored 20 points. The Lakers took the lead for good in the second quarter and turned back every challenge by the Celtics.

Paul Pierce scored 30 points and Ricky Davis added 24 for the Celtics (29-37), who fell into eighth place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game ahead of Miami.

"We played well tonight against a team not at full strength but a team that has some very good basketball players in Shaq, Kobe and Payton," Celtics coach John Carroll said. "We just never seemed to be able to get enough stops."

In the first half, Boston shot 55 percent (23-of-42) but trailed, 68-60. L.A. played off O'Neal as Payton scored 16 points, Kareem Rush came off the bench to collect 14 of his 17 and Bryant added 10.

"When you have Shaq in the low post, it makes everybody on their team just a little better," Carroll said. "It makes their perimeter guys hard to guard."

In the third quarter, Davis went in for an uncontested dunk. He tried to put the ball through his legs but lost it off the backboard. He recovered it and still had time to go in for a one-handed windmill slam that cut the deficit to six points.

That was as close as Boston got as O'Neal asserted himself with 20 points in the second half. His free throw gave the Lakers their largest lead, 86-72, with 4:40 left in the third quarter.

O'Neal had 15 points in the final period, including two free throws after the Celtics closed to 105-98 with 3½ minutes to go and a rim-rattling dunk that made it 113-105 with 1:17 left.

"They opened up Shaq late in the game, and when you got such an inside person like that, you have to call for help," Pierce said. "The guys on the perimeter had a great shooting night and they drew us out and worked an inside-outside game. When they do that, it's hard to defend."

In the second of a four-game road trip, L.A. shot 46 percent (39-of-84), made 32-of-48 free throws and held a 50-38 advantage on the glass.

L.A. Lakers 106, L.A. Clippers 103

Lakers Stumble, Beat Clippers

LOS ANGELES, March 17 (Ticker) -- In less than two minutes, the Los Angeles Lakers nearly undid a dominant offensive performance.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting and Shaquille O'Neal had 21 and 11 rebounds as the Lakers held on for a 106-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in the opener of a home-and-home series.

The Lakers, who were the road team, led by as many as 17 points as they shot nearly 60 percent (38-of-63) in the first three quarters. They led comfortably until the Clippers rallied late.

Trailing by 10 points with just under two minutes remaining, the Clippers cut it to 104-102 when Corey Maggette buried a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left.

The Lakers threw away the inbounds pass and the Clippers had a chance to tie. But Maggette and Keyon Dooling each missed 3-pointers in the final seconds.

Lakers forward Karl Malone had 17 points and eight rebounds in his third game back from a knee injury. It was his best game since scoring 20 against the New York Knicks on December 9.

Elton Brand had 26 points and nine rebounds and Maggette added 25 and eight for the Clippers, who have lost 12 of their last 14 games.

L.A. Lakers 104, Milwaukee 103 (OT)

Bryant Misses Once, Not Twice in Lakers Win

LOS ANGELES, March 21 (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant had the last word in a game that was owned by Shaquille O'Neal.

O'Neal had 31 points, a season-high 26 rebounds and seven blocks, but Bryant buried a jumper with 25 seconds left in overtime to give the Los Angeles Lakers a 104-103 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

O'Neal dominated the Bucks, who have little inside presence, for his second 20-20 performance in four games. He made 14-of-16 shots from the floor and 3-of-5 free throws, scoring 30 points for the first time since February 18.

Bryant had 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting but went scoreless for nearly six minutes before burying a jumper from the top of the key over Keith Van Horn to give the Lakers a 104-103 edge.

Van Horn, who had 32 points and nine rebounds, badly missed a runner as time wound down and O'Neal secured the rebound as Los Angeles extended its winning streak to five games.

L.A. Lakers 90, Minnesota 73

Bryant, Lakers Thump Wolves

LOS ANGELES, March 26 (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers are rounding into postseason form, and there doesn't seem to be anything the rest of the Western Conference can do about it.

Kobe Bryant scored 35 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 22 and 18 rebounds as the Lakers won their seventh straight game, a 90-73 thrashing of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With all four superstars healthy and playing well together, the Lakers have become formidable. Their current streak began against some of the NBA's patsies, but in their last two games, they have dismantled division leaders Sacramento and Minnesota.

"We have everybody healthy and we are starting to build our chemistry back," Bryant said.

Bryant continues to play his best basketball of the season, making 13-of-21 shots and adding nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks. During the winning streak, he is averaging 31.4 points.

O'Neal was his usual dominant self, collecting his 11th straight double-double. He is averaging 21.7 points and 17 rebounds during the streak.

The defense also has gotten tougher, holding Minnesota - the best-shooting team in the NBA - to just 31 percent (27-of-86). The Timberwolves' "Three-Headed Monster" of Kevin Garnett, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell made a combined 15-of-43 shots.

"When you go out there and put the effort forward on the defensive end, good things happen," forward Karl Malone said.

"I think this win is good for us," Bryant said. "It shows we are improving and playing defense consistently."

The Lakers (49-23) hurdled the Wolves (49-24) in the Western Conference standings and are two games behind Sacramento for the Pacific Division lead.

"When we get in the playoffs, we are confident that we can beat anybody," Bryant said.

"The team's looking really good right now with 10 games left, before the real season starts," O'Neal said.

The Lakers took the lead for good near the end of the first quarter, which saw Bryant score 11 points. They widened the advantage to 50-42 at halftime before controlling the third quarter.

Bryant had a layup and 3-pointer in an 11-0 spurt that pushed the margin to 70-48 with 5:05 left. O'Neal's driving finger roll capped the quarter and made it 78-54.

In the period, Bryant scored 13 points and the Lakers shot 50 percent (13-of-26) while holding the Wolves to 26 percent (6-of-23).

"We just let them do whatever they wanted to do," Cassell said. "They dictated the tempo, how they were going to play, how the game was going to play (out), and we didn't do anything about it."

L.A. Lakers 105, Portland 104 (2 OT)

Bryant Leads Lakers to Pacific Crown

PORTLAND, Ore., April 14 (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant's star never shined brighter than on Wednesday night.

Bryant's long fadeaway 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Lakers a 105-104 double-overtime victory over the Portland Trail Blazers and an improbable Pacific Division title.

A loss by the Sacramento Kings earlier Wednesday opened the door for the Lakers (56-26), but they needed roughly three hours to claim the win and looked like a beaten team on more than one ocasion.

Los Angeles trailed, 87-84, in regulation when Portland forward Ruben Patterson missed two free throws with eight seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Bryant was stymied by Patterson's defense and appeared to have no shot. He pumped several times unsuccessfully, slid his body to the right and just managed to get off a 26-foot 3-pointer that went right through and tied the contest with 1.1 seconds remaining.

The first overtime was a battle between NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal and Zach Randolph. Each big man scored scored six points in the extra session, with O'Neal's basket tying it at 95-95 with 30 seconds left.

After O'Neal fouled out with just over three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Damon Stoudamire scored Portland's last seven points, including a coast-to-coast, slashing drive to the hoop that gave Portland a 104-102 lead with 2.2 seconds to go.

Following a loose ball foul on Portland's Darius Miles for bumping Derek Fisher, the stage was set for Bryant, who scored 37 points.

He took Gary Payton's inbounds pass, elevated and drilled another 26-footer over NBA blocked shots leader Theo Ratliff, who hit Bryant's arm and knocked him to the floor.

The second-seeded Lakers will play the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Randolph had 21 points and 18 rebounds for the Trail Blazers (41-41), who missed the playoffs for the first time in 22 seasons.
