z18Ry._12 Im ASB-Olymp Geschrieben 23. Januar 2012 (bearbeitet) FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - John Harbaugh spent the first 9 years of his NFL coaching career as a special teams coach. So maybe he has a little more empathy for kickers.Maybe that explains why the Ravens coach chose to defend Billy Cundiff after his costly 32-yard miss in the final seconds of yesterday's 23-20 AFC Championship Game loss to the Patriots rather than follow the lead of his former boss, Andy Reid, and suggest to reporters that they "do the math" to ascertain the importance of the miss on the game's outcome. "I told him it's going to be OK," said Harbaugh after watching his team lose in the conference title game for the second time in 4 years. "We'll move on. He's a great kicker. Everybody has a tough moment. Billy will be fine." Cundiff's makeable attempt with 11 seconds left would have sent the game into overtime. "It's a kick I've kicked thousands of times in my career," Cundiff said after the game. "I just didn't convert. There's really no excuse for it." A year ago, Cundiff missed just three field goal attempts all season and earned his very first Pro Bowl invitation. He was also voted first-team All Pro. This season, he has struggled. He made just 28 of 37 field goal attempts during the regular season, but had made 19 of 21 from less than 40 yards. It never dawned on anyone that he might miss the 32-yarder. But he did. "You earn the respect of your team by playing well," Cundiff said. "I felt that up until this point, I had given guys a lot of reason to believe in me. "I'm disappointed that I let my teammates down. Ray [Lewis] played his heart out. He's had a long career and you don't know how many years he has left. To let him down, it's pretty tough." No one in the Ravens locker room pointed the finger at Cundiff after the game, including Lewis. "No one play won or lost this game," the Hall of Fame-bound linebacker said. "Could have put us in a position to keep playing? Absolutely. But one play didn't win or lose it. There is no one man who has ever lost a game. We win as a team and we lose as a team. There is no 'Billy is at fault, Billy missed the kick.' It happens. Move on. Move on as a man because life doesn't stop." Midway through the fourth quarter, the Ravens had a fourth-and-6 at the New England 33. It was assumed Harbaugh would send Cundiff out to try a 51-yard field goal. But Cundiff was 1-for-6 from 50 or more yards this season. Harbaugh elected to go for it. Quarterback Joe Flacco was pressured by defensive lineman Vince Wilfork and threw an incompletion. "We just felt from a percentage standpoint we had a better chance of getting the first down," the Ravens coach said. "That's a long field goal. That's a tough field goal down there in those conditions." He trusted Cundiff later on the shorter one, but it sailed wide left, along with the Ravens' Super Bowl hopes. "I get paid to make field goals," Cundiff said. "I don't get paid to miss them. It'll strengthen me. Throughout my career, I've had challenging situations and I'm still standing here today. It'll be tough for a little bit. But I've got two kids. I've got some lessons that I need to teach them. First and foremost that you stand up and face the music. And then you move on." bearbeitet 23.
