Chelsea close in on Davids

Press Association

Monday July 5, 2004

Edgar Davids

Another day, another Chelsea signing.

Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids is said to be close to joining Chelsea and could be unveiled to the press as early as this afternoon.

Despite interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and Internazionale, the Daily Mirror claims the 31-year-old Dutch midfielder is set to sign at Stamford Bridge on a three-year deal.

The former Juventus man, nicknamed 'Pitbull' on account of his aggressive, combative style, is said to be close to agreeing an £80,000-a-week deal.

Meanwhile Chelsea have announced the management team to work under new manager Jose Mourinho for the coming season.

Mourinho will have two assistant managers - Baltemar Brito and Steve Clarke. Brito was Mourinho's number two at Porto while Clarke, a Chelsea player for 11 years, is the only survivor from the Claudio Ranieri era.

The line-up will be completed by fitness coach Rui Faria, goalkeeper coach Silvino and scout Andre Villas.

Kluivert targets 'small English club'

Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert has revealed that he is willing to join a small English club.

Kluivert said: "I know I'm leaving Barcelona and my aim now is to find the perfect club, the club that fits with me. That's the most important thing at the moment.

"I have always said I will play in England one day and I hope that can happen this year.

"It doesn't have to be a big club because I would rather go to a small club where I can help them become bigger. Somewhere with ambition and where I would be a big part of that."

Deco is all set to become Barca's fourth new signing for the 2004-05 season. The Portuguese star arrives here on the back of his Champions League success with Porto.

Anderson Luis de Souza, known throughout the football world as Deco, was born on 27th August 1977 in Sao Bernardo don Campo (Brazil), but obtained Portuguese nationality in March 2003. He has spent most of his footballing career so far in Portugal. An established star of Champions League winners Porto and EURO 2004 runners-up Portugal, Deco excels for both his creative and defensive qualities in midfield and can adapt to a variety of roles. He is, without a doubt, one of the most talented players on the European scene and his signing will represent a significant leap forward in the overall quality of the squad.

Keen on Barca

Deco wanted a move to FC Barcelona this time last year but the Porto president, Pinto da Costa, was reluctant to let him go. He enjoyed spectacular success with Porto, winning three league medals, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. He was named best player in the recent final against Monaco. He has 15 international caps with Portugal.

With the incorporation of Deco alongside Ronaldinho, fans everywhere will be looking forward to seeing what could become one of the most creative midfield duos in the world.

Dani agrees Espanyol move

Espanyol have moved to further strengthen their side by signing former Barcelona forward Dani.

The 28-year-old has agreed on a two-year contract with Espanyol, which represent a return to the city of Barcelona for Dani.

He left Camp Nou at the start of the year and completed the campaign at Real Zaragoza, but he has now decided to move to Espanyol.

New coach Miguel Angel Lotina is busy building the squad for next season and adds Dani to his other new signing - Argentinian defender Mauricio Pochettino.

Dani had an offer of a new contract at Zaragoza, where he played 15 games and scored two goals at the end of last season.

Dani just has to complete a medical at Estadio Montjuic before sealing his free transfer move to Espanyol.

Endlich hat man ihn auch irgendwo untergebracht. :)
