Jury: Williams guilty of disorderly conduct in boat party case

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Former Minnesota Vikings running back Moe Williams, charged last fall after a raunchy team boat party that tarnished the team's season, was found guilty of disorderly conduct Thursday.

A jury found him not guilty of two other misdemeanors -- indecent conduct and lewd or lascivious behavior. Williams was accused of touching the breasts of a dancer in a public space during the boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka.

"I never intended to do anything that would basically make anybody feel uncomfortable," Williams said after the verdict.

Hennepin County District Judge Kevin Burke fined Williams $300 and ordered him to complete 30 hours of community service that benefits women or children. The exact program was not immediately determined.

In finding Williams guilty of just one charge, the jury determined he touched the woman in view of other people or where other people could see but that he hadn't intended to be lewd or indecent.

Afterward, Williams complained about being treated unfairly, saying he wondered why the captain of the cruise, who is white, wasn't charged despite evidence that he kissed a dancer's breast. Prosecutor Steve Tallen denied that race was a factor in his decision about filing charges, and he has said the case against the captain was shaky. Williams is black.

The 32-year-old Williams was the first player tried on charges related to the Oct. 6 party, in which Vikings rookies arranged to take veterans out onto Lake Minnetonka on two boats. Tackle Bryant McKinnie and cornerback Fred Smoot face the same charges and are set to go on trial in May. Charges against former Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who has since been traded to the Dolphins, were dropped.

Bengals sign QB Wright to one-year deal

CINCINNATI (Ticker) - The Cincinnati Bengals have turned to an AFC North Division rival to find a backup for Carson Palmer.

The Bengals on Friday signed quarterback Anthony Wright, who had been with the Baltimore Ravens, to a one-year contract.

Entering his eighth season, Wright played in nine games, starting seven, for the Ravens in 2005, setting career highs in passing yards (1,582), attempts (266), completions (164) and completion percentage (61.7) while filling in for the injured Kyle Boller.

"The signing of Anthony brings us a quarterback who has started and won games in the NFL," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "He is also competitively familiar with the teams in our division."

Wright will compete with Craig Krenzel and Doug Johnson to be the backup to Palmer, who had a breakthrough season before getting injured in the Bengals' playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Palmer is recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left knee.

Jon Kitna had been Palmer's backup before signing with the Detroit Lions earlier in the offseason.

MILWAUKEE -- Brett Favre has told the Green Bay Packers he will return to play this year.

Citing anonymous team and league sources, a sports website reported said Favre informed Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy of his decision in a telephone conversation Tuesday morning.

Calls by the Associated Press to Thompson, McCarthy, team president Bob Harlan and Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, were not immediately returned.

Die NFL hat Running Back Ricky Williams von den Miami Dolphins für die gesamte kommende Saison gesperrt.

Der 28-Jährige war im Februar zum 4. Mal in seiner Karriere des Missbrauchs von Drogen überführt worden. Williams setzte bereits in der Saison 2004 aus, als er seine Karriere zwischenzeitlich für beendet erklärte.

Im Winter kehrte er zu den Dolphins zurück, nachdem diese von ihm eine Rückzahlung in Höhe von 8,6 Millionen Dollar verlangten. Williams will seine Laufbahn aber fortsetzen.

MILWAUKEE -- The Green Bay Packers made their first major splash in the free-agent market this offseason, agreeing to terms with defensive back Charles Woodson on Wednesday.

Woodson's agent, Kevin Poston, said the Packers agreed to a seven-year deal for $52.7 million, including $10.5 million in the first year of the contract.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson declined comment.

Woodson's signing comes a day after Brett Favre told the team he would return to play the 2006 season. Favre previously urged the team to make a "statement" in free agency, similar to the signing of Reggie White in 1993.

The team lost out on its pursuit of kicker Adam Vinatieri and linebacker LaVar Arrington before finally landing Woodson.

HOUSTON -- All NFL drafts have lots of intrigue near the top. This year, the Houston Texans pulled off a shocker.

The Texans signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams on Friday night, snubbing Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush for the No. 1 overall selection in one of the most surprising moves in NFL history.

The Southern California tailback was projected as the top pick after he dominated college football last season with his dazzling moves and super speed, but has been embroiled in some controversy this week concerning who paid the rent for a home his parents lived in, and whether an agent was involved.

Houston had started negotiations with Bush and Williams, and decided to go with the sensational defensive disrupter, who has been described as a cross between Julius Peppers and Lawrence Taylor. That takes all the suspense out of the start of Saturday's draft.
