TAMPA - If the Lightning are going to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, they will have to do it without goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, a star of the Lightning's Stanley Cup run in 2004.

Khabibulin signed a four- year, $27 million deal with Chicago on Friday, making him the biggest name to leave the Lightning since they won the Cup in June 2004. Khabibulin, considered the top goaltender available on the free-agent market after going 16-7 with a 1.71 GAA in the 2004 playoffs, joins former Lightning teammate Jassen Cullimore in Chicago. Cullimore signed with the Blackhawks prior to last season's lockout.

Despite a strong effort by the Lightning in recent days to work out a deal with Khabibulin, he chose to sign with Chicago. The Blackhawks have made a big splash on the free- agent market since the lockout ended by signing defenseman Adrian Aucoin and forward Martin LaPointe.

``When we began this process, we targeted Nikolai Khabibulin and Adrian Aucoin as the two main players we wanted to sign,'' Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon said today.

By signing with Chicago, Khabibulin will be able to work with renowned Blackhawks goaltending consultant, Vladislav Tretiak, who starred on the Russian Olympic team. In 55 regular-season games with the Lightning in 2003-04, Khabibulin was 28-19-7 record with three shutouts, a 2.33 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage.

Mark Streit in die NHL

Was sich abgezeichnet hat, ist nun Tatsache geworden: Mark Streit wechselt für ein Jahr von den ZSC Lions zu den Montreal Canadiens in die National Hockey League.

Streit ist der dritte Schweizer neben David Aebischer (Colorado Avalanche) und Martin Gerber (Carolina Hurricanes), der in der am 19. September beginnenden Saison in einem NHL-Kader steht.

Streit ist es durchaus zuzutrauen, sich in der NHL zu etablieren. Er hat sich in den letzten Jahren zum besten Verteidiger in der Schweiz entwickelt. Bei den ZSC Lions war er als Captain der unumstrittene Leader und erhielt in der letzten Spielzeit soviel Eiszeit wie sonst kein Schweizer Feldspieler in der NLA. In der Nationalmannschaft übte er ebenfalls das Amt des Captains aus.

Da géhts ja ordentlich rund. Wo geht der Satan hin?

Durch den Salary Cap ja da kann sich einiges ändern. Vor allem hat auf einmal Pittsburgh vor allem mit Gonchar wieder einen starken Spieler geholt und mit dem einen Schwedne so und so einen guten Verteidiger.

Also ich sehe der nächsten Saison positiv entgegen, allerdings hab ich ein wenig den Faden verloren durch diesen Streik.

Meine Lieblingsteams: Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers taugen mir auch volle, eigentlich fast alle kanadischen Teams. In den USA gefallen mir eigentlich nur die Panthers, Penguins und die Sabres.

Überhaupt nicht mag ich: Colorado, REd Wings, Carolina, Dallas, San Jose, LA Kings, Columbus und die mir verhassten Devils

Bislang am besten verstärkt hat sich wenn es stimmt das Forsberg zu Philadelphia geht die Flyers.

Many hockey observers are asking themselves why Wayne Gretzky needs the aggravation of coaching one of the NHL’s middle-of-the-pack teams – albeit a club that he has equity in. The answer is probably two-fold: Gretzky enjoys remaining in the limelight, and why wouldn’t he? Has any athlete, beyond Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan, been lauded and revered as much as No. 99? Most of us can only dream of what it’s like to inspire the type of reaction Gretzky receives every time he steps into an NHL arena. His accomplishments as a player transcend hockey, and sport in general. He is simply one of the most recognized people in the world, and that is clearly something he relishes.

As well, his team, the Phoenix Coyotes, probably requires as much of an emotional boost as any franchise coming out of the lost NHL season. Phoenix is one of the markets expected to struggle for re-acceptance, and is looking to fill a giant new arena in the suburb of Glendale. Gretzky’s presence behind the bench adds a large measure of credibility before the first puck is dropped. This is clearly a business decision for The Great One, as much as anything else.

It’s also crystal clear that Gretzky could have faded from the spotlight and ridden the coat-tails of his brilliant playing career for the rest of his life. Under those conditions, his reputation as one of the greatest achievers in sports history would have remained fool-proof. But, Gretzky chose not to go that route. He wanted and needed the challenge of staying in the game at a different level, regardless of the risk. His first reward was a Gold Medal as head of Team Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City – Canada’s first Olympic hockey title in 50 years. He followed that up by piecing together the Canadian team that won the World Cup of Hockey tournament last September.

Gretzky chose to forgo the guidance of Team Canada at the recent World Hockey Championships in Austria and – coincidentally or not – Canada lost the Gold Medal match to the Czech Republic.

Coaching a middling pack of NHLers is clearly more fraught with peril and risk than is putting together a team of your country’s best players for a two-week tournament. But, who among us is willing to bet that Gretzky will fail at this endeavor? Imagine what his players must be thinking right now, realizing they will skate through the coming season for the most regal name in hockey history. Veteran Mike Johnson, a forward I got to know when he began his career in Toronto eight years ago, could hardly contain his enthusiasm when we spoke recently about the possibility of his playing for Gretzky.

No. 99 has earned respect, and he commands respect. That alone should compensate for whatever he lacks in practical coaching experience.

Maple Leafs Sign Steen and Kronwall

(August 9, 2005) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that the club has signed forward Alexander Steen and defenceman Staffan Kronwall (pronounced Kron-VALL) to multi-year entry level contracts. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Steen, 21, played 50 games for Modo of the Swedish Elite League last season collecting 17 points (nine goals, eight assists) with 26 penalty minutes. He finished first on the team in game winning goals (4-tie), first in games played (tie) and fifth in goals. He played six Swedish Elite League playoff games scoring one goal with four penalty minutes. The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba represented Sweden at the 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championships. He was Toronto's first choice, 24th overall in the 2002 Entry Draft.

Kronwall, 22, played 35 games for Djurgarden of the Swedish Elite League collecting five points (one goal, four assists) with 43 penalty minutes. He finished fourth among team defencemen in points (tie). He also played three games for Brynas of the Swedish Elite League collecting one assist with four penalty minutes. In 12 Swedish Elite League playoff games with Djurgarden he scored two goals with 10 penalty minutes. He led team defencemen during the playoffs in goals (tie). The native of Jarfalla, Sweden represented Sweden at the 2002 World Junior Championships and collected four penalty minutes in seven tournament games. He was Toronto's ninth choice, 285th overall in the 2002 Entry Draft.
