Del Horno close to Blues deal

Chelsea appear to be closing on the capture of Athletic Bilbao full back Asier Del Horno.

The Spain international has emerged as Jose Mourinho's prime target to fill one of his transfer criteria for next season.

Mourinho wants to add a left back to his championship-winning squad and has seemingly dropped his interest in Arsenal's Ashley Cole following the tapping-up row.

Del Horno has been linked to The Blues for the past few months and a deal between all parties is now near to being struck.

Blues officials held talks with their Bilbao counterparts at the start of the week and Del Horno's agent was in London on Tuesday for further discussions.

The 24-year-old has a buyout clause in his contract of €20 million (£13.5 million) and Bilbao have previously stated they are willing to sell if this figure is met.

But reports in Spain suggest the Basque outfit are now prepared to accept a sum slightly below the amount in the player's contract.

A fee of €17 million (£11.5 million) has been put forward and it appears as though this has been sufficient to convince Bilbao to cash in on the defender.

Del Horno is tipped to sign a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge and his anticipated arrival in West London will, at least, shorten Mourinho's search for fresh talent in the summer.

Real Madrid have been keeping a watching brief on Chelsea's negotiations with Bilbao but they are unlikely to be willing to match the money their Premiership counterparts are offering.

Del Horno's cash admission

Asier Del Horno's proposed move to Chelsea has moved a step closer with the player saying that the money on offer is too good for him and Athletic Bilbao to turn down.

The 24-year-old left back is widely tipped to join Roman Abramovich's revolution at Stamford Bridge, with a deal worth €18 million on the cards.

With Del Horno also set to triple his current wage with the Premiership champions, he says that the money involved in the deal is too good for both himself and the club to turn down.

"This is a unique opportunity for me and for Athletic," Del Horno told radio Onda Cero.

"If you look at the figures that are being talked about then it seems unthinkable that a team would pay that sort of money for me.

"For both Athletic and me it would be difficult to say no to an offer like this.

"With a contract like this I would sort out not just my life but the life of my whole family.

"Athletic would be able to clear their debts and renew the contracts of players like Tiko, (Fran) Yeste, (Pablo) Orbaiz and (Andoni) Iraola."

Blues boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster the left side of his defence with Wayne Bridge struggling with injury, while William Gallas has been forced to fill in at the end of the season.

Spanish international Del Horno is under contract at Bilbao until 2007 but the money on offer may prove to be too much for them to refuse.

Naja, so einfach darf man es sich nicht machen. Chelsea spielt derzeit großartigen Fußball und ist auch eine Mannschaft mit Rießenpotential. Der Transfer von Del Horno ist natürlich wieder mal ein genialer Schachzug. Nach den eher Flopkäufen des ersten Jahres, wird derzeit wirklich sehr viel Potential gekauft.

Wird die nächsten Jahre ein brandgefährlicher Anwärter auf die Championsleague Krone.

Für ein Butterbrot mit sicherheit nicht,aber für einiges weniger.Und ich hab nie gesagt dass Chelsea nicht spielen kann, nur find ich dass Barca besser spielt,(zumindest um einiges attraktiver)aber ok....Im Premiere hatte Peter Kenyon letztes mal ein Interview gegeben wo er sagte:"wir danken Roman natürlich für die ganze finanzielle Situation,aber wir werden dieses Jahr probieren aus eigenen Kräften zu wirtschaften ohne sich wieder voll auf ihn zu stützen.....Da bin ich ja mal gespannt.

Nicht nur das er sich in die Hölle des Löwen begibt, auch mit dem Essen wird er in der teuflischen, gefürchteten Küche von England noch Probleme bekommen.

Ehrlich gesagt, nach England würden mich wirklich nur Dutzende Millionen von Euro bringen wenn überhaupt, ansonsten würde ich jedes andere Land vorziehen.

Chelsea on Tuesday night completed the signing of Spanish international defender Asier del Horno for a fee of 12 million euros (approximately £8 million).

Del Horno joins Chelsea from Athletic Club Bilbao on a 3-year deal from 1st July 2005.

Chelsea manager and first team coach José Mourinho said: "Asier is an outstanding international player who will add quality to the squad in a position we needed to strengthen. I'm sure he will be a key player as Chelsea continues with its goal to achieve greater success both in England and in the Champions League."

The 24 year-old, who recently helped Spain remain in top spot in their World Cup qualifying group after matches against Lithuania and Bosnia-Herzegovina, has seven senior international caps in total and represented Spain at youth level from the age of 17. Del Horno had been at Athletic Bilbao since the age of 11.

He signed the deal at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening and will be formally introduced when he joins up with the Chelsea squad when pre-season training begins from July 6th.
