Meine Güte, Maxwell war bei Inter immer die Schwachstelle in der Verteidigung, der war zu keinem Zeitpunkt stark genug für Inter oder irgendeinen anderen Topclub.

Lässt man ihn im LM auflaufen okay, als als Verteidiger ist er nur durchschnittlich.

Und ja, mMn ist Jankulovski stärker als Maxwell...

Has Maxwell been the signing of the season?

With only a handful of games left this season, now may be a good time to reflect on what has passed so far. With hopes still strong that our trophy cabinet will once again creak beneath the added weight of another large haul, maybe we should take a look at just what improvements Pep made last summer in order to get us to this point.

Of course the main answer would be the acquisition of a certain Swede, who cost a bundle, came with plenty of baggage, and managed to surpass even the highest expectations placed upon him. Surely Ibrahimovic has been a worthy and useful addition to the squad, offering a more direct option when required, but with more than enough flair and creativity to fit into the Barca style. He has frustrated as well as inspired us all, in equal measure. But enough of the much talked of number 9, we did sign other players last summer after all.

Perhaps the strangest signing was that of Dmytro Chyrgynskiy. Brought in as cover for Pique and Puyol, and not to mention for a staggering transfer fee, the Ukrainian has struggled to settle in so far this season. Yet he has showed moments of composure and intelligence on and off the ball that should give us reason for hope. Sure he is not the fastest, and he can only be slowed down with that 22 million euros price tag hanging around his neck, but with what appears to be a natural footballing mind, he reads the game well, finds good passes, is very strong in the tackle; it does seem only a matter of time before Chygy proves himself. Fingers crossed – he is one for the future.

So what about a player for the present?

Maxwell arrived with little fan fare. A 3.5 million euro signing from Inter Milan, the Brazilian didn't quite meet the standard of a 'Crack' that was being set to us by those in control of the cheque book in Madrid. Signed as back-up for the ever impressive Eric Abidal, many thought the Brazilian would struggle for game time, let alone make any major impact on the side. But what an impact he has made.

After a faltering, stop-start beginning to his career at the Camp Nou, Maxwell has really begun to shine over the last two to three months, where his intelligence and strength going forward has really added a new dimension to the team. Yes Abidal is great; he's fast, and powerful, and will probably always be a bigger name than Maxwell, but for a team to win trophies it needs players like Maxwell within its ranks.

So far this season, Maxwell has featured in 28 games for Barcelona, and surprisingly only coming off the bench in two of those. So good is his understanding of the game, and his all round technique, that Pep seemingly trusts him to play anywhere, employing him at left-back, right-back, left-midfield, left-wing, centre midfield and, even on occassion, as a makeshift centre-forward. This should come as little surprise though, what with his early football schooling taking place in the original home of total football, Ajax.

It is this dynamism that has made the fans truly sit up and take note of just what a good signing Maxwell has been. When he plays he supports those ahead of him with great gusto, getting forward as often as he can. And yet he is not careless or overly buccaneering with his movement, often choosing to hold a position somewhere just over the half way line, right on the cusp of the edge of the pitch, thus doing just what Pep wants from his wing-backs – making the pitch larger.

Without the pace of Abidal or Alves, Maxwell relies on this intelligent reading of the game and positional sense to allow him to get forward and support. Sure he is not the fastest, as we all saw against Arsenal, but he is tougher in the tackle than Abidal, and arguably reads the game better than the Frenchman, picking up those one or two yards not with speed but with clever positioning. Having said that, he can be too hasty to go to ground in a challenge, jumping in when it's not necessary, but it must be hard for him to see Alves and Pique doing this every week and getting away with it, whilst he is so often punished for it.

At the start of the season, the left side that many expected to start week in, week out consisted of Abidal, Iniesta and Henry. Now due to injury and lack of form, we have a completely different trio taking up those positions – Maxwell, Keita, Pedro. As such, these three hard-working, tireless, intelligent players have made a left-wing that seemed tired and thread bare at the start of the season come alive with natural interchanging of positions, smart passing and fantastic movement. We must take our hats off to them for this. Left-winger? Who needs a left winger?

This turn-around must, at least in some part, be attributed to the fantastic contribution Maxwell makes. Knowing Keita will cover for him, he gets in and around the box on countless occasions throughout the game, allowing Pedro to drift and pull defenders away from the crucial by-line area where so many dangerous crosses are swung in. The Brazilian also makes many intelligent runs throughout a game, with Xavi or Messi finding him with one of their trademark passes. All Maxwell is missing is the shooting boots to grab a goal.

When that goal does come it is safe to say that many players and fans alike will be greatly pleased for the quiet, unassuming left-back, a man who appears the exact opposite of our other, less reserved Brazilian, Dani Alves. As the exact kind of player Pep seems to want his team to be filled with; hard-working, intelligent and positionally flexible, Maxwell has more than proved himself as a highly valued member of the squad. If trophies do arrive at the end of the season then Maxwell will certainly have earned his medal(s). An already illustrious, if not unnoticed, career may be about to reach new heights.

Das du - wiedermal - einen sagenhaften Blödsinn geschrieben hast.

Und ja, jemand der 80 mal bei einem Verein aufläuft der im Gegensatz zu Mailänder Mittelständlern ab und an auch Titel gewinnt, ist ja grandios gescheitert

Außerdem wird jeder Spieler derzeit so gehyped, da sollen die stillen Wasser auch mal etwas Aufmerksamkeit bekommen.

Du hast ihn bei Inter wohl wirklich nicht oft gesehen! Zudem hatten sie bis Santon (der ursprünglich ein RV war, also soviel zur Klasse von Maxwell bei Inter)) kam auch keine Alternatve, da wars also nicht schwer auf die Anzahl von Einsätzen zu kommen. Das hat ihn defensiv zu keinem besseren Spieler gemacht...

Und wenn er so gut ist wie du hier annimmst, wieso verschenkt ihn dann ein Team wie Inter dann quasi?

Und nochmal, andere Liga anderes Spiel.

Wir haben einen offensiven LV gesucht von daher wars ja recht logisch dass ihm unser Spiel mehr zusagen wird. Daher auch die (trotzdem) vorsichtigen Erwartungshaltungen. Der Einzige der ihn einen Fehlkauf genannt hat, warst *trommelwirbel* du .

Aber ich hab davon noch nie ghört. Wahrlich sagenhaft.

Maxwell zu holen war keine wirkliche Verstärkung.

Witzig, dass ein Spieler, der für italienische Topclubs (war bei Milan zB. auch im Gespräch) zu schwach war, in Spanien beim Amtierenden CL-Sieger für gut befuinden wird!

Letzters sollte wohl eher Galliani zu denken geben. Aber ich geb ja schon Ruhe

Spanien (bzw. Barca): offensive:

Maxwell in Italien = Fail, Maxwell in Spanien (bzw. bei Barca) = Hit

Somit so wie ichs schon beim Kauf gesagt habe. (Dass im Spanien mehr entgegenkommen wird)

Wobei es aber gut möglich wäre, dass Maxwell sich mit seinem Spielstil in Spanien leichter tut als in Italien...

Maxwell war damals bei ajax als ich ihn etwa 28 mal live gesehen habe schon grosse klasse, der beste LV den sie gehabt haben...
