Pass auf was du dir wünscht...

Pass And Move - It's The Liverpool Groove
Threlfall sets Liverpool on way to youth glory

Dominic Fifield at Anfield

Friday April 14, 2006

The Guardian

If this was truly a glimpse into the future then Liverpool should be buoyed. The destiny of this season's trophy is emphatically in the Merseysiders' hands after a scintillating display in grandiose surroundings doused a highly rated Manchester City side here but, with the bigger picture in mind, optimism abounds.

The success of a youth team is measured more in the number of graduates who break into the senior set-up than trophies gleaned with the juniors, yet there were indications last night that the academy is flourishing at last. City boast the most productive conveyor belt of talent in the country at present and, as favourites, this defeat represented a surprise. Liverpool, with a solitary success in this competition a decade ago, have generated another side to challenge.

The lead is theirs going into next Friday's second instalment, with promise long overdue. Back in 1996 the victorious side included Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher. Since then, the club's sparkling Kirkby academy, maintained at an annual cost of £2.5m, has struggled to produce. Indeed, since the 7-1 annihilation of Southampton in 1999 courtesy of a hat-trick from Robbie Fowler and goals from Dominic Matteo, Carragher, Owen and David Thompson, only Steven Gerrard and Stephen Warnock have maintained their places in the first team.

That had prompted frustration. Relations between Gérard Houllier and the academy director, Steve Heighway, became strained with Rafael Benítez supplementing those at Kirkby with talent from elsewhere - Jack Hobbs was signed from Lincoln, Paul Anderson from Hull and Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza.

"The only purpose of the academy is to produce players for the first team," said the Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry. "That means players who are going to win trophies, not help you finish fifth or sixth."

Gerrard and Carragher, watching in the stands, will have been encouraged by this display. They led early, Charlie Barnett's corner converted in front of the Kop by Robbie Threlfall with Ryan Flynn, fed by Anderson, sweeping in a slick second.

The visiting goalkeeper Laurence Matthewson did wonderfully well to deny Paul Barratt and the irrepressible Anderson, twice, from close range with Liverpool's play propelled by pace and invention to thrill the crowd of 12,744. Anderson later scissor-kicked on to the bar before Miki Roque nodded in the third.

City's Daniel Sturridge belted against the post as the hour approached and a flurry of late chances saw Antwi scramble from the line and Roberts palm away Kelvin Etuhu's low drive. City will generate similar frantic pressure next week though, for now, it is advantage Liverpool.

REDS WIN BRINGS CUP CLOSER

Lee Brown 13 April 2006

liverpoolfc.tv

Liverpool have given themselves a great chance of winning their first FA Youth Cup since 1996 after goals from Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Miki Roque gave them a superb 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the 1st Leg of the Final at Anfield tonight.

The Reds will take a commanding advantage to the City of Manchester Stadium for next Friday's 2nd Leg after a fine display. But it was only the superb form of Manchester City goalkeeper Laurence Matthewson that stopped them finishing the job tonight after he made a series of superb saves.

City made a bright start to the game when Etuhu took advantage of a loose pass to surge into the box, but the Reds soon asserted themselves and Robbie Threlfall hit a free kick just over before Ryan Flynn almost intercepted a nervous clearance from

the visiting keeper.

The Reds were soon well on top and their domination created another good chance, this time for Anderson, in the 10th minute. It came when Hammill's cross was fisted straight to Barratt by goalkeeper Matthewson and when his header found Anderson, the young winger flashed an athletic overhead kick narrowly wide.

There was a healthy crowd inside Anfield to see the Academy stars take centre stage and they didn’t have to wait long to their side go in front. We'd had just 17 minutes when the breakthrough came, but it was no more than the Reds deserved for their positive start.

They might have been in front just moments earlier when it took a last ditch clearance from Manchester City Captain Johnson to deprive Antwi of a goal scoring chance. But from Barratt's resulting corner Robbie Threlfall stooped in to score into the Kop net at the second attempt.

Manchester City, being watched by first team boss Stuart Pearce, responded well when first Johnson and then Etuhu brought the best out of Reds stopper David Roberts. But Liverpool were soon back on top they would go on to create a host of first half chances that would see them lead 2-0 at the break, with only the agility of Matthewson preventing it from being more.

The Reds came close to doubling their lead in the 25th minute when Lindfield's header was block saved by Matthewson. And Matthewson needed to be at his very best just a minute later when this time saving Barratt's shot at point blank range after he had collected a pass from Anderson.

But there was to be little respite for the busy City keeper because in the 32nd minute Liverpool made it 2-0 through Ryan Flynn. And again it was an Anderson cross that was City's undoing as Flynn steamed in to plant his cross firmly into the back of net.

Matthewson must have been wondering how he was again picking the ball out of the net after making so many saves, but if it weren't for another fine save from Anderson in the 40th minute, he'd have been doing it for a third time.

Manchester City came here with a big reputation so it was perhaps no surprise to see them make a fight of it in the second half. Their intentions were clear from the moment the game restarted when Etuhu sped clear and forced a brave clearance from Roberts.

And they will wonder how they didn't pull a goal back when first Sturridge struck a post with a 57th minute shot from six yards and then the same player blazed over when clear of the Reds' defence in the 69th minute. But Sturridge must have finally realised it wasn't his night when Roberts brilliantly saved his 72nd minute shot with a goal looking inevitable.

Liverpool almost made it 3-0 in the 75th minute when Paul Anderson breathtaking overhead kick cannoned back off the crossbar, but they weren't to be deprived and they did make it 3-0 with substitute Miki Roque's header in the 83rd.

Steve Heighway can congratulate his young stars on a job well done tonight and you can be sure they will go to Manchester next week determined to finish the job and bring home the cup.

Liverpool: David Roberts, Stephen Darby (captain), Robbie Threlfall, Jack Hobbs, Godwin Antwi, Charlie Barnett, Paul Barratt, Ryan Flynn (Jay Spearing 85), Craig Lindfield, Paul Anderson, Adam Hammill (Miki Roque 75). Subs unused: Josh Mimms (GK), Jimmy Ryan, Michael Nardiello.

Liverpool kids take lead from Gerrard

By Neil Johnston

Liverpool 3 Manchester City 0

RAFAEL BENÍTEZ insists that Liverpool have a bright future and on last night’s evidence their manager is right. Cheered on by Steven Gerrard, the captain of last season’s Champions League-winning side, the club’s crop of youngsters established a commanding advantage in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup final at Anfield.

It is ten years since Liverpool won the competition, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen helping to defeat a West Ham United team featuring Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard, but barring an unlikely recovery by Manchester City in the return leg next Friday, Stephen Darby, the captain, should lift the cup after an impressive performance by Steve Heighway’s youngsters.

“It was a great effort by the team,” Heighway, the academy director, said. “However, we’ve still got to complete the job and no one is getting carried away.”

A crowd of 12,744, which also included Carragher and Sami Hyypia, saw goals by Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Miki Roque leave City with a mountain to climb.

Heighway’s young talents never looked back after taking an eighteenth-minute lead through Threlfall, the full back stabbing the ball home in front of the Kop after the City defence had failed to deal with Charlie Barnett’s corner. Liverpool’s second, 14 minutes later, was made in Scotland. Flynn, the Falkirk-born midfield player, produced a delightful low finish after good work from the impressive Paul Anderson.

Signed from Hull City after being shown the door at West Bromwich Albion, Anderson thrilled the crowd with a series of powerful runs and was denied a goal of his own by Laurence Matthewson, City’s overworked goalkeeper.

The previous time City won the competition, in 1986, Ian Brightwell, Paul Lake and David White were being tipped for bright futures. They will not give up hope of matching the achievement of 20 years ago, particularly with the troublesome Daniel Sturridge and Kelvin Etuhu in attack.

However, the damage that Liverpool inflicted last night has probably left them with too much to do. Anderson rattled the woodwork with a spectacular overhead kick before Roque completed a good night’s work in the closing minutes. .

Bravo FC Liverpool-Youth

Today is the 17th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster. Our thoughts go out to the families of the 96, those injured in the disaster and those others that suffer to this day. You will never be forgotten and you will never, ever, walk alone.

hills1.jpg

Kenny Dalglish: "One morning, before everyone was in, I went out on to the pitch and tied my children’s teddy bears around a goalpost at the Kop end. The goals, the pitch and the whole Kop were covered in flowers, scarves and tributes. I remember describing it as the ‘saddest and most beautiful sight’ I had ever seen. It really was like that. It was sad because of the reason whey the tributes were there, but it was magnificent to see them. On the Friday night, after everybody had gone, I walked through the Kop with Kelly, Paul and Marina’s dad, Pat. Paul looked at all the tributes, the flowers, the scarves and said: ‘Why did it have to happen to us?’ Kelly, Paul and I stood at the back of the Kop with tears falling down our faces. Walking through the Kop was so emotional. A lot of tributes had been left by people in the place where their loved one had stood. People who had lost the person they stood next to to watch games would leave something special in remembrance. Seeing two oranges left beside one of the barriers really moved me. It was difficult not to weep on coming across little tributes like that. They were so insignificant and yet so full of meaning. Perhaps the two people took it in turn to bring oranges to matches, something to share at half-time. That really got to me. I wondered whether the person who laid the oranges ever returned to the Kop. I came across somebody’s boots, left there by his mourning family. Everywhere I walked there were endless messages, each of which embodied someone else’s grief. It was so difficult to pass through.

"The shameful allegations intensified the anger amidst the trauma. We spent the week consoling the bereaved and attending funerals. On the Saturday we held a service at Anfield. At six minutes past three there was a minute’s silence across the country. Then everyone at Anfield sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ We tied scarves between Anfield and Goodison. We just wanted to show the unity existing on Merseyside. The following day, there was a final service on the pitch. It was really quiet, just the wind rustling the scarves tied to the crossbar. When somebody shouted out ‘We all loved you,’ we all broke down."

hills3.jpg

Alan Hansen: "I have heard people say that they should now ‘let it go’ and ‘get on with their lives’, a view that stems partly from the massive changes that have taken place in English football as a result of Hillsborough. But for the tragedy, and the Taylor Report in January 1990, which enforced the transformation of British football grounds into all-seat stadiums, it is possible that the long history of stadium neglect, and spectators treated as turnstile fodder, would have continued. The new-style British club stadiums, which are among the most impressive in the world for safety standards and facilities, have made it easier for clubs to be better run, and therefore improve the quality of their football. However, though a great deal of water has passed under the bridge since Hillsborough, my attitude to those who feel that the HFSG should now forget its grievances is, ‘It’s easy for you to talk - you didn’t loose anyone.’

"Had I lost someone, I would never have let it go."

hills4.jpg

John Aldridge: "Whenever I think of Hillsborough I am drawn to the story of young Lee Nicol from Bootle. Lee was fourteen but looked about ten. He reminded me of my son, Paul. Lee was in the middle of the crush at Leppings Lane but was still alive when he was pulled out. I went to see him in hospital. He looked a lovely kid. As he lay there in a coma, I whispered words into his ears. I asked the doctor about his chances of recovery. 'He's clinically dead, John,' he said. I hadn't realised how badly he was injured. That news ripped into me. My heart went out to Lee's family, decent people who didn't deserve to be victims of such a tragedy."

hills2.jpg

John Barnes: "The tributes were not just at Anfield. I walked into Stanley Park and saw all the Everton scarves tied together. They stretched from Goodison Park to Anfield, a symbol of the unity between the two clubs. All football fans were united in their grief. Even those from Manchester United sent gestures of sympathy. Every fan had reason to mourn."

Rest in Peace

hills5.jpg

We think it's appropriate to republish Dave Kirby's poem "The Justice Bell", which first appeared four years ago today, and poignantly illustrates why the fight for Justice continues to this day.

Dave writes: This is dedicated to the families and loved ones of all those who fell 17 years ago. Through lack of justice, they have never been allowed to close the book on this tragic chapter in their lives. I pray that those in charge that day and the conspirators who have lied and covered up evidence ever since, will one day seek deep into their consience and reveal the real truth of Hillsborough.

The Justice Bell

A schoolboy holds a leather ball

in a photograph on a bedroom wall

the bed is made, the curtains drawn

as silence greets the break of dawn.

The dusk gives way to morning light

revealing shades of red and white

which hang from posters locked in time

of the Liverpool team of 89.

Upon a pale white quilted sheet

a football kit is folded neat

with a yellow scarf, trimmed with red

and some football boots beside the bed.

In hope, the room awakes each day

to see the boy who used to play

but once again it wakes alone

for this young boy’s not coming home.

Outside, the springtime fills the air

the smell of life is everywhere

viola’s bloom and tulips grow

while daffodils dance heel to toe.

These should have been such special times

for a boy who’d now be in his prime

but spring forever turned to grey

in the Yorkshire sun, one April day.

The clock was locked on 3.06

as sun shone down upon the pitch

lighting up faces etched in pain

as death descended on Leppings Lane.

Between the bars an arm is raised

amidst a human tidal wave

a young hand yearning to be saved

grows weak inside this deathly cage.

A boy not barely in his teens

is lost amongst the dying screams

a body too frail to fight for breath

is drowned below a sea of death

His outstretched arm then disappears

to signal thirteen years of tears

as 96 souls of those who fell

await the toll of the justice bell.

Ever since that disastrous day

a vision often comes my way

I reach and grab his outstretched arm

then pull him up away from harm.

We both embrace with tearfilled eyes

I then awake to realise

it's the same old dream I have each week

as I quietly cry myself to sleep.

On April the 15th every year

when all is calm and skies are clear

beneath a glowing Yorkshire moon

a lone scots piper plays a tune.

The tune rings out the justice cause

then blows due west across the moors

it passes by the eternal flame

then engulfs a young boys picture frame.

His room is as it was that day

for thirteen years its stayed that way

untouched and frozen forever in time

since that tragic day in 89.

And as it plays its haunting sound

tears are heard from miles around

they’re tears from families of those who fell

awaiting the toll of the justice bell.

BLACKBURN ROVERS 0 - 1 LIVERPOOL :)

Sunday 16 April 2006 14:30 , Barclays Premiership

REDS WIN KEEPS SECOND IN SIGHT

Liverpool have kept up the pressure in the race for 2nd place after Robbie Fowler's fourth goal since rejoining the club gave them a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park today.

Fowler's 29th minute goal was enough to secure a 6th Premiership win on the bounce after another superb rearguard action in the second half repelled Mark Hughes' side, who themselves are chasing a Champions League place. And Liverpool are now all but virtually assured Champions League football again next season.

It was a landmark day for Pepe Reina on his 50th Liverpool appearance as he beat Ray Clemence's record of 1970/71 when he conceded 32 goals in his first 50 games for the Reds, Reina has conceded just 29.

Rafa Benitez made three changes from the side that beat Bolton at Anfield last week, with Steven Gerrard, Harry Kewell and Peter Crouch giving way to Stephen Warnock, Momo Sissoko and Fernando Morientes.

When the game started it was the defences who were on top and goal incident was rare. But for all that it was an uneventful start, Rafa will have been the happier of the two managers as the Reds rarely looked in danger and were controlling the play.

Liverpool had claims for a penalty in the 23rd minute when Fernando Morientes' smart turn was halted by Ryan Nelson in the penalty area. But the massive Liverpool following didn't have to wait long to see their side gain the advantage when Robbie Fowler made the breakthrough in the 29th minute.

It was a goal all of Fowler's own making as he cleverly chested the ball into Morientes' path. And Nando was equally astute as he drew Brad Friedel from his goal and laid the ball back into Fowler's path and he dispatched his fourth goal of his second coming into the back of net from 12 yards.

Blackburn players were furious in the aftermath of the goal as they claimed for offside against Djibril Cisse, but referee Alan Wiley and his assistant ruled the Frenchman wasn't interfering and the goal stood.

Cisse was involved again on the stroke of half time and he almost doubled Liverpool's lead as the raced clear and saw Friedel deflect his shot into the ground and then against the crossbar.

It was Blackburn who were in the ascendancy after the restart and they put Liverpool under pressure in their search for an equalizer. From having little to do in the first half Pepe Reina was now a busy goalkeeper and he had be alert to deal with a Dickov cross that came down under his crossbar and then again to keep out Bentley's shot.

Liverpool had a great chance to make the game safe in the 73rd with one of the moves of the match. It started with an exchange of passes between Djibril Cisse and Harry Kewell; and when Kewell crossed into the area Fernando Morientes was there to flash a header wide. And Cisse missed an even better chance in stoppage time as he again crashed a shot against the Blackburn woodwork.

As it was Fowler's goal proved to be the winner and it means Liverpool still have a realistic chance of overhauling Manchester United in 2nd place. And they will go into next Saturday's FA Cup Semi Final with no shortage of confidence.

Mein Fazit:

Geburtstag – happy birthday, Rafa !!! :feier: Da darf man schon fragen: "FC Liverpool-Fans was wollt ihr mehr ???" - FROHE OSTERN !!!

:raunz:
