WIGAN’S Austrian defender Paul Scharner must have been chuffed when his services were chosen by the club as its prize in a Mother’s Day competition.

Karen Wiseman was a bit surprised too when the player turned up on her doorstep after her son’s poetic tribute to her . . . “She cooks, she cleans She’s very good with beans! She can be tough But she fills our house with love.” . . . was chosen as the winning entry. Scharner’s gift? He had to do Karen’s washing, hoovering and dusting, before making her a cup of tea. Oh the joys of a professional footballer’s life . .

Morecambe to introduce safe standing at new ground

The FSF has learned that Morecambe Football Club are to become the first league club in England or Wales to incorporate Safe Standing areas into their new stadium.

At a shareholders AGM last night it was revealed that directors viewed an all-seated stadium as inappropriate and the club’s new 7,000 stadium would include 5,000 Safe Standing places with plenty of room to develop should the club be promoted from League Two.

The Shrimps, who hope to move into the new ground in time for the 20010-11 season, will raise significant amounts from the sale of their current ground’s land. The club will therefore be debt free and ownership of the newly built ground will rest with the Trust that owned has owned their current stadium since the 1920s.

The move will be welcomed by Safe Standing campaigners, including the FSF, who have long argued that with new technology and crowd management techniques standing is not inherently unsafe.

Brother of Jermain Defoe killed

Jermain Defoe will not be playing for Spurs against Manchester United. The half-brother of England footballer Jermain Defoe has died after being assaulted in east London. Jade Defoe, 26, suffered serious head injuries in the attack in Leytonstone, east London.

He was taken to a London hospital where he died on Friday night, a police spokesman said. Post-mortem tests confirmed he died of a head injury. A 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody. The attack took place about 1700 BST on Monday in Walnut Gardens, near the junction with High Road Leytonstone.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We do not believe a weapon was used during the assault. We retain an open mind as to any motive and inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident."

Jermain Defoe did not travel with his Tottenham Hotspur team mates for their match with Manchester United on Saturday because of the death. "All at the club wish to extend their condolences to Jermain Defoe and his family following the death of his half-brother late yesterday," a spokesman for the club said.
