WENGER SALUTES UNIQUE HENRY

Arsene Wenger hailed Thierry Henry as unique as the Frenchman stood on the brink of scoring his 100th Premiership goal ahead of the clash against Southampton.

Henry has already notched up 99 league goals in just 159 games, 15 of them as a substitute, since his arrival in English football in August 1999.

And he has every chance of reaching his century when Southampton visit Highbury, with Jose Reyes set to partner him up front in the absence of Dennis Bergkamp.

Wenger said: “It's a sign of a great player. What is remarkable though is that Thierry doesn't have the game of a goalscorer.

“If I told you that a guy had scored 99 goals in 159 games, you'd think that he would wait for every chance in the box and never cross the ball. But he's completely different.

“He has the game of a footballer who drifts out wide and doesn't just play inside the box. It's unconventional.

Is there another player like him in the world? I don't think so. He's as much a provider as a goalscorer and he doesn't just score tap-ins.”

Asked to compare Henry to Dutch legend Johann Cruyff, Wenger added: “All the great players can take people on and give a final ball. You didn't really know where someone like Johann Cruyff played.”

Henry similarly roams at will, with his assist rate being particularly impressive, although he is still more prolific than even Cruyff managed to be.

Then again, it must be remembered that the Frenchman still took several months to settle into life at Highbury following his move from Juventus, where he had struggled to make his mark as a winger.

Wenger converted him into a striker of international repute, finishing second in both the FIFA and UEFA player of the year votes of 2003.

Now the Arsenal boss is attempting a similar feat in transforming 20-year-old Spanish international Reyes after his multi-million pound move from Seville, where he often operated on the left flank.

“I feel that we are a team with no fixed positions so everyone can play a bit everywhere. I will try to give him a chance centrally as well,” he said.

Reyes has appeared three times for Arsenal already, although twice as a substitute, and Wenger had been hoping to ease him into Barclaycard Premiership action - expecting his best form to come next season.

Bergkamp's calf injury, allied to the continued absences of Sylvain Wiltord, Jeremie Aliadiere, Kanu and Fredrik Ljungberg, have nevertheless forced his hand.

“Ideally, I'd have left him a bit more time but I have no choice with so many people out or away,” said the Arsenal boss.

“I believe you will see his real potential at the start of next season but I hope the fact that I play him quickly will get him adapted earlier.

“There are many new ingredients for him - like the languague, the cold and the physical game - but I hope that playing him will speed up his adaptation without losing his confidence.

“He's a positive boy as he's integrated quickly into the group and at least he can speak Spanish with six or seven other players in the squad.

“I like the fact that he can provide and that he has pace and good technique. His team attitude and work rate are also very good.”

Southampton defender Michael Svensson believes their defeat at Manchester United two weeks ago can give them the confidence to end Arsenal’s record unbeaten start to the season.

Svensson and his team-mates face a Gunners side who are two points clear of United at the top of Barclaycard Premiership table having gone 24 games without defeat.

But Southampton were unlucky to lose 3-2 at United last month and Svensson insists Gordon Strachan’s side can take great heart for that match as they prepare to play the Barclaycard Premiership leaders.

“Arsenal will be a very difficult side to keep quiet,” admitted Svensson.

“They have great quality and have gone 24 games unbeaten. But we played well against Manchester United and will look to give them a really good game,” he added.

“We should have got a point at Old Trafford and if we produce such a good performance again then we have got a great chance of getting some points there.

“The important thing is that we cannot let Arsenal have the space to play with the likes of Henry and Robert Pires in their team. If you give them lots of space then they will score goals.

“Henry doesn’t just score goals but creates chances for others. He is one of the best strikers in the world, but that’s why I’m playing in the Premiership.

“They are a world-class team but we have to look at our own performances and concentrate on that.”

Southampton lost 6-1 in the corresponding fixture season year before Arsenal then beat them in the FA Cup final 10 days later.

Svensson added: “We want to have revenge for last year’s game and when we played them before Christmas.

“But we had a few injuries then and that made a big difference. We weren’t performing well then and were a bit weak, but we have to forget about that and be a bit stronger.”

England striker James Beattie is in line for a recall to Southampton’s attack.

Beattie is expected to return up front for Gordon Strachan’s side with Kevin Phillips struggling to recover from an ankle injury suffered in the goalless draw against Fulham on Saturday.

Northern Ireland full-back Chris Baird has been put on standby if captain Jason Dodd fails to overcome a leg injury suffered at the weekend.

But midfielder David Prutton is still out as he serves the final game of a three-match ban while Claus Lundekvam, Neil McCann and Matthew Oakley are all injured.

Arsenal (from): Lehmann, Stack, Lauren, Toure, Campbell, Cygan, Keown, Cole, Clichy, Vieira, Gilberto Silva, Edu, Parlour, Pires, Reyes, Henry, Bentley.
