The Boston Red Sox exercised their $7.1 million 2010 team option on catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez, his agent, Alan Nero, told the Boston Globe.

+ Varitek der vielleicht die 3M$ Player Option zieht. Dafür is dann 2011 alles frei für Mauer ;)

Mal ein paar Sawx News:

The Boston Globe reports today that Red Sox GM Theo Epstein would love to acquire Halladay, but does not want to give up Clay Buchholz and Casey Kelly in the same deal.

With Alex Gonzalez now delivered to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox are believed to have inquired about Marco Scutaro to fill what has become a black hole at shortstop.

Scutaro apparently is not the only option. The Boston Globe say the Red Sox might consider a deal with the Diamondbacks for Stephen Drew or even pursue free agent Adam Everett, who is considered a strong defensive player.

While the Red Sox still think Jed Lowrie will develop into a major league shortstop, they no longer have plans to wait for him.

Ever since the Boston Red Sox traded away Hanley Ramirez to the Florida Marlins in the deal for Josh Beckett a few years ago, reports seem to surface that Boston wants to get the star shortstop back. The latest came from Bill Madden of the New York Daily News, who wrote that the Red Sox are engaged in talks for Ramirez now that Alex Gonzalez signed with the Blue Jays. According to Madden, Ramirez "won't ever see that new stadium." Marlins GM Michael Hill countered by saying there are no current discussions regarding Ramirez. Previous reports say Boston's shortstop search is centered on Marco Scutaro.

The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox were prepared to offer Gonzalez $3 million if they could not find a better fit via trade or free agency. Scutaro reportedly is looking for a three-year deal, while the Red Sox would likely prefer just a two-year contract because they feel 19-year-old Jose Iglesias could be ready by 2012.

Monday via the Hot Stove, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney said that the Detroit Tigers asked for right-hander Phil Hughes and outfield prospect Austin Jackson in return for centerfielder Curtis Granderson.

In the same text, Peter Gammons adds that "to get Curtis Granderson, the Tigers asked the Cubs for Starlin Castro and two prospects. The Cubs considered that to be too high a price."

UPDATE: Tuesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that a trade involving the Yankees for Granderson cannot happen without a third team, and that the Yankees aren't sure about giving up left-handed reliever Michael Dunn in the trade.

UPDATE: Buster Olney reports via the Hot Stove that "Source with knowledge of negotiations says Granderson deal is close to being completed," and Sherman adds that the teams have exchanged medical reports on players.

UPDATE: SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets that the terms of a trade have been agreed upon and that all three clubs involved are reviewing medical reports as the final obstacle.

Heyman also reports that the Tigers will receive OF Austin Jackson and LHP Phil Coke from the Yankees, while acquiring RHP Max Scherzer and LHP Daniel Schlereth from the Diamondbacks. Arizona will receive RHP Edwin Jackson from the Tigers and RHP Ian Kennedy from New York. The Yankees end up with CF Curtis Granderson. Buster Olney is also reporting via the Hot Stove that the deal is "on the verge." Is there a reason why Dunn would hold up such a trade? Our own Keith Law chimes in on the 24-year-old.

Granderson - fertiger Starspieler in den besten Jahrem

vs.

Coke - Middle Relief, nuff said.

The Boston Red Sox have reached a preliminary agreement to trade third baseman Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers for catcher/first baseman Max Ramirez, according to FoxSports.com.

The web report cautions that the deal is not final for a variety of reasons, including the ability of Lowell, who has hip and thumb problems, to pass a physical. Boston's ownership also must give their approval to assuming $9 million of the $12 million due to Lowell in 2010.

The Red Sox will be in need of another corner infielder if Lowell departs. Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com writes that one choice at third base is free agent Adrian Beltre, whose agent, Scott Boras, met with the Red Sox Wednesday. Edes adds that "if the Sox elect to sign Beltre, it raises questions about whether they would make a similar outlay for left fielder Jason Bay."

ESPN Insider...
