United are going to Fleetwood

FC United booked their place in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and a trip to the Fylde Coast to take on Fleetwood on Saturday 15 September after demolishing Trafford 5-2 at Altrincham’s Moss Lane stadium in front of 2,238 supporters.

The Reds were quick out of the blocks and appeared to be champing at the bit to get their FA Cup debut underway. Rob Nugent headed the first from a corner after only 11 minutes and Josh Howard doubled the lead just six minutes later, side footing home from close range after a precise move from Shaun Roscoe and Jerome Wright.

Wright could have made it 3-0 seconds later as United looked like they were going to run riot, but keeper Martin Campbell made an impressive point blank save. And if anyone in the United team or the sizeable crowd was getting carried away about a trip to the seaside in the next round of the competition, Trafford soon brought them back down to earth with a bump – scoring two goals in five minutes to level the match.

A Chris Mackay strike left Sam Ashton floundering at his near post and a delicate chip from Andy Lundy was bordering on being unstoppable as Trafford made it clear to their former North West Counties Division One rivals that they wouldn’t have everything their own way.

The home side dug their heels in and enjoyed their best spell of the match giving a shell shocked United cause for concern. However, the Reds regrouped and got back to doing what they do best – playing fast, attacking football down the wings.

Nicky Platt coolly converted a penalty on the stroke of half time and the result was put beyond doubt in the second half when Simon Carden got on the score sheet after 69 minutes and hard working substitute Anthony Hargreaves got his well earned second for the club in injury time to complete the rout.

Scorers: Mackay 22, Lundy 27; Nugent 11, Howard 17, Platt 44 pen, Carden 69, Hargreaves 90(+1)

FC United of Manchester have made a triumphant debut in The FA Cup by beating local rivals Trafford 5-2 in front of 2,500 at Altrincham’s Moss Lane ground.

The game proved to be an end-to-end affair as FC United – formed by Manchester United fans disgruntled when the Glazer family took control at Old Trafford - raced into an early two goal lead before Trafford hit back to level.

FC United took control in the second half, however, with Robert Nugent, Simon Carden, Joshua Howard, Nick Platt and Anthony Hargreaves scoring the goals that set up a meeting with Fleetwood in the second preliminary round.

And FC United manager Karl Marginson was delighted with his team’s performance: “We played so well,” said Marginson.

“The game was played in a great spirit and both teams were able to get the ball down and play, which made for a fantastic spectacle.

“There were some great goals and the fans have gone home having been royally entertained, so everyone is really happy at how the day has panned out.

“At the start it was almost like the old days of the FA Cup – there were fans with rosettes, cardboard cut-outs of the FA Cup and a really good attendance, which benefited both teams.

“Everyone at FC United of Manchester has waited two years since the club was formed to play in the FA Cup as so many people associated with us are former fans of Manchester United.

“I can definitely say it was worth the wait.”

And Marginson revealed history was about to repeat itself in the next round as FC United have been drawn to play Fleetwood – the team against which Newton Heath, who became Manchester United, made their FA Cup debut in 1896.

“It’s amazing that our second FA Cup game will be against the team that Manchester United made their debut against 111 years ago,” said Marginson.

“It will be a tough tie, but the spirit of the FA Cup is alive and well, and at non-league level that’s what it is all about.”

Curzon Boycott Shakes InVision

By Paul Edmundson

IMG_2159-2.jpg

On a landmark day in the history of FC United – a club whose fans are famed for making a huge racket wherever they go – it was the silence that rang out around the Tameside Stadium that spoke loudest.

In a well organised and brilliantly executed boycott, only 20 or so away fans were visible among the 297 in attendance, with an estimated 1,500 refusing to trek to Ashton for the puzzling 12.45pm kick-off arranged at the whim of an internet television channel and without the approval of both clubs.

A few miles away at the home of Abbey Hey - just as captain Rob Nugent was powering home United’s second, building on Simon Carden’s first-half tap in - about 500 reds were watching the first-place reserves outfit beat nearest league rivals Club AZ.

It meant that for the first time in the club’s short history, as the first-team shirts put on an impressive display on the field, there was no singing, no merriment, no smiling young faces or joy expressed off it.

The mood of the day was reminiscent of the emotional Sunday back in May 2005 when 100 or so ‘Big United’ fans dressed in black to mourn the loss of their club to current owner Malcolm Glazer, but those taking part will this time know that, unlike on that dismal Cardiff afternoon, they’ve won their battle.

The Curzon fans, who have seen their savvy team rise to the top of the table in a promising five months, seemed to have no problem with having the league puppet them about on their Saturday afternoon.

One middle-aged man queuing up for a much-needed steaming cup of coffee at half time seemed to sum up the apathy, or just downright stubbornness, of his fellow Curzon supporters.

“What’s the point in staying away? It won’t achieve anything. People need to realise it’s not the 1960s anymore. You just have to get on with it,” he said.

But, according to some of those who do have the power to change the status quo, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The magnitude of the boycott certainly seemed to home with today’s grim-faced match commentator John Warrington, head of In Vision, who said he is confident such a situation will not be allowed to take place in future.

Speaking at half-time, he said: “It is hugely disappointing that the attendance is so low for everyone involved, especially Curzon Ashton, who have lost out on a big slice of revenue.

“When the board of FC United announced that they would be in favour of a boycott of this game, I was in Las Vegas and I was disappointed that Andy Walsh was not prepared to wait just one more day until I got back to discuss the issue with me so we could have talked it through.”

He added: “As it is, I cannot see any club being shown more than once before the play-offs on a Saturday.

“But when there are concerns of the change of times, we will certainly be prepared to hold discussions with the league in order to find a solution.”

Indeed, Mr Warrington admitted he did ask the league if they would move the fixture back to 3pm, with In Vision showing the game in full at 5pm. The league refused.

League secretary Phil Bradley was at today’s game, but wasn’t too prepared to make himself available for a comment. He left right on the final whistle.

Curzon chairman Harry Galloway said that, while he expected a low attendance, it was still a blow for his club to miss out on an estimated £10,000 windfall from a bumper attendance.

FC United of Manchester general secretary Lindsey Robertson, meanwhile, said she was delighted with the success of the boycott – and that, according to Mr Warrington, it could avoid kick-off times changing in future without agreement of the clubs involved.

She said: “It just shows how strongly the supporters feel about this matter. I know it is hard for them because they want to support the team, especially in such a big game, but it’s important we stand up for what we believe in.

Curzon Ashton Boycott - message from the FC United Board

After the team’s excellent 2-0 win at the Tameside Stadium secured by goals from Simon Carden and Robert Nugent, the board would like to make the following statement:

‘The board of FC United wishes to congratulate fans for the stand they took in boycotting the Curzon Ashton game on Saturday 29th December. The decision to boycott the game was not one taken lightly and followed the enforced change to the kick off time.

Whilst supporters showed their overwhelming support for the stand taken by the board and the team won on the pitch the reality is that all parties suffered; Curzon Ashton lost potential match day revenue, a large number of FC United supporters stayed away from the game and as such were denied the chance to see their team play, and the league and Invision’s relationship with two member clubs has become unnecessarily strained.

FC United came into existence in direct response to the disregard shown for football supporters by those who put profit before the fans who support the game week in week out. As a democratically elected board we endeavour to represent the interests and will of FC United fans and we hope that the strength of feeling shown by supporters prompts greater consideration for their concerns in the future.

To avoid this situation arising again we are seeking a greater dialogue between the league, its sponsors and member clubs. We recognise that sponsorship and television bring much needed revenue into football but that money should not buy the right to bypass the interests of football supporters who are the biggest financial backers of the game.

There may be financial, policing or logistical reasons why a game should take place at a time other than 3pm on a Saturday. Indeed it is inevitable that FC United’s games will become the subject of TV interest in the future. The board would therefore like to stress that it is not opposed to the re-arrangement of any fixture date and / or time, provided that it meets with the approval of and benefits the respective clubs and their supporters.

We hope that the team’s fantastic performance goes some way to compensate those United fans who stayed away from the game and thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult and sensitive period.

Finally a big thank you to all those who volunteered to steward and help out at the reserve game; almost £2000 was raised for club funds and Abbey Hey also benefited from a financial windfall, selling out of pies and beer. The 500 people who made the journey to Abbey Hey were treated to a terrific display by our young reserve side. The atrocious weather made playing conditions difficult but the players responded to the noisy support from the sidelines beating promotion rivals Club AZ 3-1 in the Cheshire League fixture, FC’s goals were scored by Ant O’Neill, Danny Allen and Kyle Harrop.

Und gleich nochwas:

Reds in Riesa

After accepting an invite to take part in the High Profile Riesa Tournament, FC United were looking forward to gaining invaluable experience when paired against two full time professional clubs, namely, Energie Cotbuss of Bundesliga 1, and Fc Erzgebirge Aue of Bundesliga 2.

With the exception of Phil Priestly, the average age of the squad was 21 years of age, certainly, the youngest team in the tournament.

Ably cheered on by the 40 or so FC Supporters which made the trip to Riesa, and the 2000 supporters of LOK Locomotive Leipzig, the lads took to the field for their first fixture against Energie Cotbus. Energie wasted no time in opening the scoring, showing the young FC United team how clinical Professional Football can be. Despite the early setback, FC coped well and shown good individual skill and composure when in possession.

Cotbus, using all there 5 a side experience, continued to out score FC eventually extending the lead to 5-0. With the LOK and FC fans cheering every touch by an FC player, Rory Patterson rewarded the crowd scoring FC’s first and only goal of the game. The game finished 6-1, but considering both the inexperience of 5 a side competition and the 8 league difference between the two teams, FC gave there best. FC was rewarded by a chant of U-NI-TED, from the whole arena, as they made there way to the dressing room after the game.

With very little rest, FC started to prepare for there second fixture against FC Erzgebirge Aue. This game took a very similar pattern to the first, with FC Erzgebirge taking a very early lead. With the score at 2-0 Jerome Wright scored FC’s only goal of the game, and with the score at 3-1, Jerome also hit a fierce shot after a great run, to hit the underside of the bar. Should that shot have gone in, it would have been the goal of the tournament. With tired legs and the eagerness to try and get back into the game, FC ended up on the end of an 8-1 defeat.

Again the marvellous LOK and FC fans applauded the lads off the pitch. An organiser of the tournament commented that, any of our players could easily fit into any of the other teams that were taking part. However, the German teams had the greater experience at 5 a side and the difference was purely in the finishing.

FC United, were out but they still had one fixture to go, a fans game v LOK. The organisers stipulated that we must have at least three first team players in our squad of ten, so ably assisting the fans that were plucked out of the crowd, were Margy, Nicky Platt and Bradley Howard.

Despite LOK being out of the tournament also at this stage, each supporter stayed on to enjoy a very competitive fixture.

The game finished 2-2, with Margy and Nicky Platt scoring for FC, but the fans that played, thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and received the same amount of support the first team had previously.

Incidentally, our two opponents faired very well in the tournament, with Erzgebirge finishing 3rd and Cotbus finishing runners up.

All in all, it was a very successful and enjoyable experience.

United lift President’s Cup

prescup.jpg

FC United beat Radcliffe Borough and lifted the Presidents Cup with a late brace of goals from Chris Baguely and Stuart Rudd. The 2-0 win sees Margy’s men claim their five trophy in three seasons and gave them a huge psychological boost going into what could be a critical two weeks at the end of the season.

United had a great chance to take the lead in the opening minutes when Rob Nugent rose well from a corner but saw his header headed off the line. Radcliffe played as well as they’ve played all season in the meetings between the two sides, enjoying good possession without ever really threatening the United goal.

In a game with few clear cut chances the Reds had the best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes when captain David Chadwick rose and headed across goal where Simon Carden just couldn’t stretch his right leg out far enough to see the ball home.

United ‘keeper Sam Ashton didn’t have much to do in the first half but when he was called into action he continued his great form from Tuesday’s meeting when he used his feet to save well form Radcliffe’s top scorer Michael Norton.

The teams were level at the interval and the game didn’t really open up in the second half but that didn’t deter the United faithful who were in good voice; as ever, throughout. Half chances here or there, but no real penetrative football left the crowd wondering whether the tie would end level.

United’s manager Karl Marginson, knowing that there needed to be a change of personnel, brought off the tireless Carden and brought on Chris Baguely, and within five minutes United were in front thanks to the substitute.

Rudd took the ball well on the right and the striker crossed in such a way a right winger would have been proud, and Baguely got his head to the ball, knocking it across goal and giving United the lead with less than ten minutes left.

The fans were ecstatic but United’s defence seemed to lose their head as Radcliffe came forward looking for the equaliser, and had it not been for Liam Foster’s clearance off the line Radcliffe would have been back in the game.

But a famous victory was sealed in stoppage time after Nick Robinson’s blocked shot fell to Rudd and the striker fired home. A fitting way to take the victory given that the big forward has spent most of the season on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The scenes at the final whistle were a sight to behold as players, management and supporters partied United, with the celebrations guaranteed to go on long into the night.

Ever the stickler for hard work though, Margy will be making sure any hangovers are quickly shaken off in order to aim for another three points away to Newcastle Blue Star. But tonight was about the victory and another success for FC United of Manchester.
