It appears that reports claiming that internationals Edgar Davids and Wayne Rooney are set for a move to Chelsea are incorrect.

During a press conference today Chelsea's new manager José Mourinho 'made it clear that the club is not in for Edgar Davids or Wayne Rooney'.

It's reported that Chelsea have made a new and improved £22m bid for Marseille striker Didier Drogba.

According to the Independent newspaper, the French club are to consider the bid today.

Chelsea could be set to land Marseille's Didier Drogba in a deal worth £24m.

According to the Independent, talks were on-going last night and a deal could be close to being agreed.

Middlesbrough could be set to sign another Dutch international with Chelsea's Boudewijn Zenden set to return to the Riverside Stadium.

Crespo makes Chelsea pledge

Hernan Crespo has vowed to stay and fight for a place at Chelsea despite reporting back to the club late and being linked with a return to Italy.

The Argentine's future at the club was plunged into doubt this week when he missed the first pre-season work-out.

Crespo was also reported to be keen on linking up with AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti, who coached him at Parma.

But the striker told The Daily Mirror newspaper: "I love Chelsea and I'm willing to fight for the team."

Crespo was a first-team regular under former Blues boss Claudio Ranieri at the start of last season, but he slipped down the pecking order after an injury lay-off and dip in form.

Now the arrival of Serbian striker Mateja Kezman poses a further threat to the South American.

New manager Jose Mourinho is also believed to be keen on Marseille's Didier Drogba, lending further weight to the view that Crespo's Chelsea days are numbered.

But the £16.8m forward added: "I made a commitment to the club when I came to London last year and I do not want to turn my back on Chelsea.

"It is tough when you train hard and you work hard and then you are not given a chance. This happened last season and I hope it will not happen this season."

"I never thought of leaving and never would until the club tells me to," the Iceland striker said.

"I've got no doubt our squad is as good as Arsenal's.

"You look at the English boys, especially Frank Lampard and John Terry - they have got a lot of experience from the European Championship.

"Hopefully we can take last year and add ideas from the new manager and take it that step further.

"It's frustrating that I've never won anything. I'm still 25 so hopefully in the next few years I'll be part of a winning team at Chelsea. It's something I dream of.

"I realise I'll never win anything with Iceland as a national team and that's just being realistic.

"The only trophies I will win are in club football and my best chance will be at Chelsea.

"We just need to gel a bit more as a team, get to know each other and work off each other that little bit better."

Eigentlich schon, aber ich traue es Carlo durchaus zu, dass er Cech noch für eine Saison auf die Bank verdrängen kann.

Drogba in Chelsea link

Chelsea are reportedly poised to prize Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba away from Marseille with a £22m bid - a British transfer record for a striker.

The Blues have already had two previous bids rebuffed by the French club.

But it is believed that the Marseille board has agreed to sell Drogba, who will now spend the weekend discussing personal terms with Chelsea.

If the deal comes off, it will surpass the £19m Manchester United paid PSV Eindhoven for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Last month, Marseille insisted Drogba was not for sale and general manager Pape Diouf claimed even a £30m bid "would make no difference".

But it appears that Marseille's resistance over the 26-year-old has crumbled in the face of Chelsea's persistence.

Drogba would be the second striker to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer following the signing of Serbian forward Mateja Kezman.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been released from his Chelsea contract, while Drogba's arrival could pave the way for Hernan Crespo's departure, despite the Argentine's insistence that he wants to stay and fight for a place.
