Chelsea's fears grow over Robben

Chelsea's concerns are growing over the fitness of Arjen Robben after a scan on his injured ankle proved inconclusive.

The Dutch winger was injured in a tackle with Blackburn's Aaron Mokoena during Chelsea's 1-0 win at Blackburn.

"There are no conclusions, only that he is in big pain. Arjen cannot walk or put his foot on the floor and he is immobilised," said boss Jose Mourinho.

"The examinations are not conclusive as the inflammatory process is really big. We don't know if he has a fracture."

Mourinho added: "Because of all the blood and fluid showing in the scan they can't tell if there is damage in a ligament or not."

Robben is certain to miss Chelsea's game against Manchester City on Sunday and has been left out of the Holland squad to play England next Wednesday.

COLE: I DO WANT TO GO

Feb 6 2005

COLE READY FOR £25M SUMMER SWITCH TO BLUES

Exclusive By Paul Smith

ASHLEY COLE wants to become a Chelsea player in an astonishing £25million summer transfer.

Cole, who scored against Aston Villa last night, is at the centre of a tapping-up row between Chelsea and Arsenal.

He knows Chelsea will increase his salary at Highbury from £25,000 a week to £90,000 a week if he moves.

He also fears Arsenal will be left behind by Chelsea's huge spending power in the transfer market.

Arsenal have only offered him a £10,000 a week rise. A close friend of Cole described that offer as 'derisory.'

Relations between Cole and Arsenal over his contract have reached such a low point that it will take a huge turnaround for Cole to stay.

Cole and his advisers opened talks with the champions as far back as last August.

But they considered Arsenal's most recent offer to be "derisory" and now Cole is ready to move.

Cole is alleged to have met Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Stamford Bridge chief executive Peter Kenyon at a London hotel 10 days ago - sparking a "tapping" row.

Although Cole and Chelsea have remained silent on the matter, the long-term damage to the relationship between the player and Arsenal is irreparable.

The bust-up has also opened up a huge split in the Arsenal boardroom.

Vice-chairman David Dein wants Chelsea to be investigated, but director Danny Fiszman - one of the club's biggest shareholders - and managing director Keith Edelman are content to let the matter drop.

The Premier League yesterday were handed evidence that Chelsea did meet Cole.

Their lawyers will start examining the paperwork on Monday before consulting both Chelsea and Arsenal. It appears Cole is so determined to complete the move to Stamford Bridge that he will submit a written transfer request if, as expected, Arsenal reject an opening £20m offer from their London rivals.

Cole is on about £25,000 a week at Highbury and the club had initiated contract talks with him despite two-and-a-half years remaining on his present deal.

But Cole and his advisers were stunned by Arsenal's latest offer, which would have given him a rise of £10,000 taking his weekly salary to £35,000.

Chelsea are prepared to pay as much as £25m for Cole and bump up his salary by an astonishing £65,000 a week.

A friend of Cole's said: "He's at breaking point and has made it abundantly clear he wants to leave.

"I think it's extremely unlikely that there is any way back for Arsenal. Naturally his head has been turned by interest from Chelsea but he is astonished that they can offer him so much and Arsenal so little."

Ironically Cole's closest friend, Tottenham captain Ledley King, who is represented by the same advisers, rejected overtures from Chelsea last summer.

King was concerned about getting first-team football at the Bridge but it appears Cole has been given assurances of his position under Jose Mourinho.

Evern more ironically, Cole's agent Jonathan Barnett also represents Wayne Bridge - the England rival whose place at Chelsea Cole would take.

Cole told Arsenal's website yesterday: "I'm under contract here for another two years so I just want to get back to playing football and trying to win the league."

It is unlikely the Premier League will end up charging Chelsea. The evidence of a tap-up will have to be compelling for them to take action - and that is not the case at the moment.

There are no pictures of Cole at the hotel with Kenyon and Mourinho - and Chelsea have made no comment since the allegations were made.

And without an official complaint from Arsenal the Premier League feel reluctant to press forward. Premier League officials do not see why they should have to take the responsibility of battling against Chelsea if Arsenal are not prepared to put in a complaint.

The game's rulers are also aware that pressing forward with a tapping charge against Chelsea could open a massive can of worms.

But the Premier League is also coming under pressure to take action from two Premiership clubs, including Manchester United.

Several Premiership chairmen are concerned that the Arsenal board appear to have adopted a laid-back approach to the Cole affair.

The Sunday Mirror understands that Manchester United and another Premiership club are pressing the Premier League and the Football Association to fully investigate the Cole claims.

The Old Trafford club have been accused of tapping players themselves in recent years - Sunderland's David Bellion and Celtic's Liam Miller were the subject of tapping allegations - and feel that Chelsea should be subject to the same scrutiny.

A top Premiership chairman said: "Arsene Wenger has had his say on the subject but David Dein, a leading figure in the FA, and the Arsenal board seem slow to call for an investigation.

"We all know that every club in the Premiership taps players but people have always done it secretly.

"If the allegations are correct Chelsea have taken illegal approaches to a new, arrogant level. To openly hold talks in a top London hotel beggars belief and seems to say, 'We are Chelsea, we can do anything'."

A Premier League spokesman said last night: "The board of the Premier League have been discussing this matter with chelsea and Arsenal for the past seven days in order to establish an appropriate course of action given the scope and intention of the rules governing this area.

"Today the Premier League received further information which we will study for any facts that might be relevent to our deliberations.

"Further discussions will take place between the Premier League board and the clubs next week."

Robben sidelined with broken foot

Chelsea winger Arjen Robben has broken two metatarsal bones in his foot and will be out for at least six weeks. Robben had an MRI scan on the injury, sustained during the Premiership win at Blackburn, on Monday.

"Six weeks is the average time to heal this injury and then I need a few more weeks to be completely fit again," he told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad.

"I had a feeling it was serious but because of the swelling it was impossible to make a final diagnosis."

The 21-year-old missed the first three months of the season with a similar injury after a challenge with Roma's Olivier Dacourt. And he added: "It felt different then last summer when I had the same injury on my other foot.

"Then I could walk already after three days but I stayed sidelined for a long period. I hope that it will now take me six to eight weeks."

Chelsea physio Mike Banks was hopeful that Robben could return at some point in March.

"The fractures are tiny and he could be playing next month," Banks told the club's website.

"One is a chip on the side of his foot, the other is a small break on the third metatarsal.

Robben, who has been a key part of the Blues' push for four trophies, claims he knew instantly something was wrong when he was felled by Blackburn midfielder Aaron Mokoena.

"I felt my leg go," he said.

"I felt it straight away after Mokoena hit me with a wild kick on my left foot."

Ziemlich heftiger Verlust für Chelsea, Robben ist mMn ein absoluter Eckpfeiler wie Terry oder Lampard.

Footballer in drink-drive arrest

Chelsea footballer Eidur Gudjohnsen has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving in Surrey. Police stopped the Icelandic striker in the early hours of Sunday morning on the A3 near Esher.

A spokesman said the 26-year-old's BMW car was stopped because of the way it was being driven. He was breath-tested and arrested.

He was taken to a south London police station and has since been bailed to return at the end of March.

Newspaper reports suggested Gudjohnsen had been out celebrating his winning goal in Chelsea's 1-0 win away at Everton on Saturday.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "At 5.20am on Sunday on the A3 southbound near Esher, officers stopped a car due to the way it was being driven.

"The driver, a 26-year-old man, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol."

Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, London police said on Monday. The Icelandic player was stopped while driving in Surrey, southwest of London, during the early hours of Sunday.

"The driver, a 26-year-old man, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol," police said in a statement.

Gudjohnsen was taken to a South London police station and later bailed to return on a date at the end of March, it added.

Chelsea's win, achieved without injured attackers Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba, lifted their points tally to 68, nine points clear of nearest rivals Manchester United by the end of the weekend.

Robben's progress

Friday, Feb 18, 2005

Arjen Robben has made a step forward in his recovery from a damaged foot, both literally and metaphorically.

Since suffering small breaks in two bones against Blackburn at the start of February the winger has been walking with the aid of crutches. At the training ground on Friday where Robben was working with the physios, there was a change to that.

“He has got rid of those sticks and he is walking around,” reports assistant manager Steve Clarke. “It is nice to see and it is good news for us.

“He has had about ten days complete rest now, he is walking, so hopefully he will be making quick progress.

“But there is no time limit on it. We’ll just have to see how it comes along but hopefully it will be quicker rather than slower.”

Chelsea's Parker close to return

Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker is only a couple of weeks away from a comeback from injury and hopes to strengthen their bid for four trophies.

Parker has been out of action since breaking a bone in his foot against Norwich in late December.

But he hopes to be back for the second leg of Chelsea's Champions League game with Barcelona on 8 March.

He said: "I am starting to feel closer now and I am running. It is quite slow but it is a start."

Parker added: "I came out of my supportive boot two weeks ago, I have been pushing on a little bit and I am really going to start pushing on fast.

"I am probably going to be joining up with the fitness coach late next week and hopefully training with the team in the next 10 days. From there - touch wood - if everything goes well, I will be near selection."

Having been put through a solo work-out at Thursday's open training session in front of 4,000 fans at Stamford Bridge, he told Chelsea TV: "It was pleasing to be back out there."
