Braves get Ankiel, Farnsworth in five-player deadline trade

CINCINNATI – The Braves traded for Kansas City outfielder Rick Ankiel and reliever Kyle Farnsworth on Saturday, sending outfielder Gregor Blanco and reliever Jesse Chavez to the Royals in a five-player deal that adds a power bat and experienced reliever.

The Royals also got prospect Tim Collins in the deal, the undersized prospect the Braves acquired from Toronto in this month’s Yunel Escobar-Alex Gonzalez trade

The five-player trade with Kansas City was finalized just before the 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline. The Braves also got Detroit minor league outfielder Wilkin Ramirez in a trade for a player to be named later or cash.

After ranking near the bottom of the National League in offensive production from outfielders all season, the Braves sought to add some power to that unit while also bolstering a strong bullpen that ranks second in the NL but has shown recent signs of fatigue.

They think that Ankiel can give them power and run-production numbers that Nate McLouth was supposed to provide after they got McLouth from Pittsburgh in a midseason 2009 trade.

With McLouth having been demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett, the Braves will turn to Ankiel, a converted former pitcher who hit 25 homers for St. Louis in 2008. The left-hander just returned from a quadriceps injury that’s limited him to 27 games this season.

Farnsworth, who was a Brave in 2005, returns to give them another veteran power arm in a deep bullpen. The setup man had a 2.42 ERA in 37 appearances this season for the Royals, with 36 strikeouts and 12 walks in 44-2/3 innings.

Ankiel hit .261 with four homers, 15 RBIs and a .317 OBP in 101 at-bats this season, and has a .252 career average with 53 homers, 172 RBIs and a .311 OBP in 369 games over eight seasons, including the past four as a position player. Arm injuries led the once-heralded pitching prospect to switch to the outfield.

Ankiel is making $2.75 million this season and has a $6 million mutual (club/player) option for 2011 that includes a $500,000 buyout.

Farnsworth has a $4.5 million salary this season and $5.25 club option for 2011 with a $500,000 buyout. Ankile and Farnsworth are owed about about $2.5 million combined for the rest of the season, and the Royals sent cash in the trade to cover part of that total.
