They were risen from their slumber halfway through the half thanks to two minutes of pure drama - with Austrian referee Fritz Stuchlik at the centre of events.

Stuchlik first gave Everton a penalty for Babych's foul on Lescott and quickly sent off Gancarczyk for a second bookable offence, presumably for something he said in the aftermath of the decision.

Johnson rifled the first spot-kick into the roof of the net but Stuchlik ruled it should be taken again due to encroaching - and when it was, Goryainov dived to his left to save Johnson's effort.

A chorus of boos rang around the ground, and with 12 minutes left the majority of the spectators had even more to complain about.

A typical Metalist counter saw Marko Devic slip in Hitcham Mahdoufi, and he passed to his fellow subsitute Zeze to slot past Wessels.

Anichebe was booked for a furious protest after being denied a blatant penalty, but with a minute left, he was wrestled to the ground by Babych, who picked up his second yellow.

Johnson placed the ball down confidently but saw his fierce penalty fly high over the bar, leaving the striker - and most of the 37,120 present - with his head in his hands.

Everton v Metalist Kharkiv

Everton's Uefa Cup dream hangs in the balance after a frustrating first-leg draw against Metalist Kharkiv.

Joleon Lescott's first half opener was levelled by Edmar and then Everton missed two penalties in an amazing finale that saw two Ukrainians dismissed.

Everton started off with by far the greater attacking intent, but it was Sergiy Valyayev who stung the fingers of Stefan Wessels early on, the German keeper producing a splendid save from a blistering drive.

Lee Carsley blasted over from long distance early on but by and large Everton were frustrated in the final third of the field as the visitors packed men behind the ball.

The Blues had plenty of possession but there was no end product and patience was certainly the order of the night.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 24th minute.

James McFadden won a corner on the right and when he swung the ball over himself,Joleon Lescott was first to it to power a header into the net.

Wessels was called upon again shortly after when he safely collected a snapshot from Marco Devic and on the half hour Yakubu tested Oleksandr Goryainov with a fine low shot on the turn.

Everton's German goalkeeper had another assured night and again showed that he is here to fight for a place and not merely to make up the numbers. The Ukrainians weren't afriad to shoot from distance and five minutes before the break Wessels got his positioning spot on again to stop an effort from Valentin Sliusar.

With the last attack of the first half Leon Osman rifled the ball across the face of the goal and Lescott was only inches away from scoring again at the far post.

Within minutes of the second period getting underway a perfectly flighted cross from the left by Baines was headed over at the back post by Osman.

Once again it was Everton asking most of the questions although two efforts in succession from Yakubu lacked power and failed to extend the Metalist keeper.

There was a bizarre series of events on 70 minutes.

Phil Neville scooped a free-kick into the box and when Lescott was hauled to the ground by Oleksandr Babych, the referee pointed to the spot and Johnson smashed it home. However, the ref then insisted on a re-take and this time the keeper smothered Johnson's kick. Somewhere along the line, Metalist's Sergiy Gancarzyk was sent-off!

Everton kept going though and Gorainov did well again to keep out a shot from substitute Victor Anichebe.

Disaster struck with twelve minutes remaining when Metalist equalised.

A swift break down the left ended with Edmar placing a shot from ten yards past Wessels and into the net.

The Blues were stunned but Osman stung the fingers of Goryainov with a fierce drive and then Anichebe appeared to be fouled inside the penalty area only for his appeals to be waved away - indeed, his voiciferous protestations even earned him a yellow card.

Anichebe did win a penalty in the 89th minute but once again, agonisingly, Johnson failed to convert - firign high over the bar.

Metalist were reduced to NINE men when Babych was shown a second yellow card.

There were six minutes of added time and duirng the second one, McFadden's beautifully controlled volley was saved by Goryainov.
