Bruins face top prospect:

The majority of the crowd in Prospera Centre for Saturday night’s WHL tilt will be rooting for the hometown Bruins, but there is at least one player in the Spokane Chiefs lineup who will have his share of fans.

The Vancouver Canucks apparently see a little bit of Pavel Bure in the Chiefs’ rocket Michael Grabner, and they made the swift-skating Austrian their first-round pick (14th overall) in the 2006 NHL entry draft.

Since then, Grabner has been getting more attention from opposing defenders, from the Canucks brass, and from Canucks boosters whenever he visits B.C.

“There’s a lot of fans talking to me after the game now, but I like that,” he said in a phone interview.

In a short space of time he has gone from a European kid trying to crack a WHL roster to bigtime prospect. Grabner said it took about a month to get used to the tough play in The Dub, but he adjusted quickly, and over the second half of last season he was scoring at almost a goal-a-game pace.

He finished the breakthrough season with 36 goals and 50 points in 67 games.

The Canucks projected Grabner as one of the fastest players available in last year’s draft, and like all great scorers he is able to make moves at high speed.

Grabner is a breakaway waiting to happen, as he uses his acceleration and speed to beat defenders wide and get in alone on goaltenders. The classic Grabner goal sees him fake a forehand shot and deke backhand.

“But goalies know I’m doing it now, so I need more moves.”

Adam Hobson is a Mission resident and former Abbotsford Pilot junior B player who now wears the “C” for Spokane. He said fans at Prospera Centre will have no trouble picking out Grabner, even without a program.

“He’s explosive, fast, and has a hard and accurate shot,” is Hobson’s scouting report for Grabner. He has also been Grabner’s roommate for the past three years, and adds: “He’s also a real nice guy.”

As a first-round draft pick might expect, opposing teams are putting their top defensive players out against the Chiefs’ gamebreaker.

“In a couple games this year I’ve noticed that,” he said. “But I’ve just got to bear down and score when I do get chances.”

Bruins GM Darrell May certainly thinks Grabner deserves some special attention.

“He’s really good. He’s got NHL speed, and he’s a skilled guy. I think he’s one of the elite players in the league.” said May.

“You can’t give him any room. If he doesn’t get the puck, he’s less effective. As far as a guy like that goes, you’ve got to make sure he’s covered and doesn’t get any openings.”

The Canucks obviously have big future plans for Grabner, but he’s just focusing on this season.

“The biggest goal is us making the playoffs, and going as far as we can,” he said, but added that he has set a personal goal to score 50 this season.

So far the Chiefs are off to a great start at 5-2-2.

“We’ve got a great group of guys, and we’re playing pretty well right now,” said Grabner

He has seven points in seven games -- including six goals. He’s happy with his game, and so too are the Canucks. Stan Smyl, the pro team’s director of player development, watched Grabner in Kelowna on Saturday. The prospect had four breakaways in that game, and scored in a shootout to give Spokane a 3-2 win. The Steamer told Grabner not to change a thing.

Saturday’s game starts at 7 p.m., and on Sunday the puck drops at 5 p.m. against the Portland Winter Hawks.

Freu mich schon richtig drauf, wenn auch Grabner endlich in der NHL spielt - genauso wie Vanek hat es auch er drauf einmal ein 'Star' zu werden ... wer hätte das vor einigen Jahren noch gedacht.

Auch Deutsche und Schweizer halten sich da einigermaßen, auch wenn die Schweizer nur Goalies drüben haben. Schade, dass Christoph Brandner durch die Verletzungen nie so gepackt hat und das Pech hatte, bei einem sehr defensiv orientierten Team zu spielen, noch dazu vor der Einführung der neuen Regeln. Ich behaupte mal der wäre in der zweiten Reihe eines guten Teams durchaus für 25+ Tore gut. Und Vanek ist ja eh auf Kurs 40+. Pöck wünsche ich einen schnellen Trade zu den Caps, wie schon mal erwähnt die passende Lösung. Dort spielen Leute wie Ben Clymer, Steve Eminger, Mike Green, Jamie Heward (35), Shaone Morrisonn

Bryan Muir (33) und Brian Pothier. Also schlechter geht es doch kaum. Zumal ich mir eh die Frage stelle, was die Rangers von Pöck erwarten. Ich glaube nicht, dass er defensiv auf Dauer schlechter ist als beispielsweise ein Sandis Ozolinsh und offensiv ist er einem Darius Kasparaitis weit voraus. Wäre er ein Kanadier, würde er fix spielen, da bin ich mir recht sicher.
