Looking to 'Grab' some attention

Austria ranks among the most picturesque places on Earth, but not a prime-time hockey factor. But that didn't stop the Vancouver Canucks from reaching into Austria for their first-round selection in the 2006 Entry Draft, winger Michael Grabner.

Although Grabner is Austrian by birth, he had a North American edge to his game, having played the last two seasons with the Spokane Chiefs in the tough Western Hockey League. The 6-foot, 190-pound winger has a scorer's mindset and the intestinal fortitude to compete in the WHL, so the NHL may not be to far off down the road.

At first, Grabner looked like a deer caught in the headlights when his name was called with the Canucks on the clock with the 14th overall selection. But with the hometown crowd cheering him, Grabner seemed to settle into the role of first-round selection.

"I am truly excited about being here," Grabner said after his selection. "I love the city and the Canucks are one of my favorite teams. I got lucky."

Grabner said his dream to play in the NHL prompted his decision to leave his homeland.

"I always wanted to make it to the NHL and it is harder to do that in Austria so I came over here and played in Spokane," he said. "I knew my chances were better if I came over to North America."

Despite his background, Grabner earned respect for his overall game in the WHL, but he stills thinks himself as an offensive player.

"I think I would describe myself as a fast skater who has good skills and likes to score goals," Grabner said.

Grabner attributes much of the attention he and fellow countryman Andreas Nodl have received this year from the strong play of fellow Austrian Tomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres.

"Well, yes, he has opened some eyes and I had seen and heard he had played really well in Buffalo this season," Grabner said. "There is a lot of good talent in Austria and I hope other kids take notice and come other to North America and try to make it to the NHL."

Grabner has been watching the development of hockey in his home country closely and finally some players are starting have success on a consistent basis.

"We are a small country with some talented players and the scouts rarely see us, but with Tomas Vanek, Andreas Nodl and myself, perhaps we can draw some more attention," Grabner said.

Indeed, the popularity of the sport is increasing in Austria. But the junior level has not quite reached the level of some other European nations.

"In Austria, hockey is becoming more popular and I have seen the younger players develop in junior when I was other there last Christmas, so I hope it continues as many of the kids will go to Sweden, Finland and North America to play against the best."

Away from the rink and the hustle and bustle of being an NHL prospect, Grabner is a typical teenager who is a fan of video games and satirical humor like South Park.

"I never used to watch South Park, but my roommate Adam Hobson watches it, so now we watch it everyday and it makes us laugh because it is so crazy and maybe it is not so good for kids, but it is a funny show" Grabner laughed.

Both Grabner and roommate Hobson are avid video gamers and jump at the chance to go head-to-head in hockey.

"At home, we play a lot of NHL hockey on his Xbox and it has great graphics, so there is always the competition against each other," Grabner said. But those allegiances have changed now that Grabner has been drafted by Vancouver.

"Now that I am drafted by Vancouver, I am going to make myself a profile and put me on a line with Marcus Naslund and Brendan Morrison and it will be more fun with us both being drafted since Adam is with Chicago. I think there will be a lot of Vancouver and Chicago games being played this year," Grabner smiled. "I will have to be careful not to celebrate too much if I score on him since he will be a good player in the NHL one day and it could back on me."

If Grabner can become the glue to the Canucks' offense, perhaps in a few years, he could become the missing piece to the Sedin twins and bringing the Stanley Cup to Vancouver. All Austrian eyes will be on Grabner to see if he can make the jump as smoothly as Vanek. Perhaps the beginning of a new hockey nation is on the rise.

Meehan said last week that the 20-year-old Malkin could circumvent his Russian contract and leave to play for the Penguins by simply resigning his job and giving the team a two-week notice that he was leaving. Russian law apparently permits such resignations, even if a contract is in place.

Malkin's new agents are believed to be exploring using the same loophole to get Malkin into the NHL this season.

Manny Legace wird nächste Saison für die Blues im Kasten stehen.

Und Eric Dejardins von den Flyers wird diese Woche bkannt geben, dass er seine Karriere beendet. Er ist der Zweitbeste Scorer unter den VErdeidigern der Flyers (136G/439A/575P in 1143 Spielen).

Die Causa Malkin wird immer lustiger:

Er hat nun das Trainingscamp seines Vereins (Magnitogorsk) verlassen und ist angeblich mit Hab un Gut in Richtung Nordamerika. Es wird bereits spekuliert, dass er vor der Russenmafia flüchtet, die ihn weiterhin in Russland spielen sehen will und er nun in Kanada um Schutz ansucht

Naja, doch ein bißchen weit hergeholt. Aber die ganze Malkingeschichte ist ja schon seit Wochen eine einzige Sitcom

Die Oilers verpflichten Petr Sykora für ein Jahr. Er wird 2,9 Mio $ verdienen. Letzte Saison hat er immerhin 74 Üunkte für die Rangers bzw. Mighty Ducks erzielt.

Ein Problem ergibt sich aber noch. Stürmer Joffrey Lupul, der im Trade für Pronger nach Edmonton kam, hat noch immer keinen VErtrag erhalten und ist somit noch immer restricted free agent bei den Oilers.

Sportlich und finanziell ist die NHL für Malkin sicher interessanter und sicherer sollte sie auch sein, wäre nicht der erste russische Sportler der einem Attentat zum Opfer fällt! Mit den falschen Leuten solltest dich dort sicher nicht einlassen! Abgesehen davon würd ich Malkin gerne mit Crosby sehen, haben beide eine gute WM gespielt, die beiden könnten für die Pens sowas wie Jagr & Super Mario werden!

Hmm, finanziell idürfte momentan für Malkin Russland sogar die bessere Wahl sein (in der NHL gibts für Rookies die ersten Jahre nicht mehr als ein Grundgehalt von 1Mio. US$). Dennoch scheint es offensichtlich, dass er bereits jetzt in der NHL spielen will. Auch wird man Crosby und Malkin wohl nur im Powerplay zusammen auf dem Eis sehen.

Momentan schaut es so aus, als würde die ganze Geschichte übers Gericht geregelt werden müssen. Am Ende wird Malkin (hoffentlich) nächste Saison bei den Pens spielen. Einzig die finanzielle Entschädigung wird wohl schwanken können
