The internal wrangling at Arsenal over whether to accept an anticipated takeover bid from American billionaire Stan Kroenke today claimed a leading figure, with the club's vice-chairman David Dein leaving his position with immediate effect.

Dein, who has served various high-ranking roles at the club 1983 and was instrumental in appointing Arsène Wenger as manager in 1996, is believed to have been in favour of the bid, a stance that puts him at odds with the rest of the board.

"On behalf of the board I would like to express our gratitude to David Dein for the many years of loyal service he has given to the club," said Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood. "We sincerely regret that irreconcilable differences between Mr Dein and the rest of the board have necessitated a parting of the ways."

"In light of recent speculation with regards to the ownership of the club, the remaining board members, who together own 45.45% of the issued share capital of the company, would like to reassure the supporters, shareholders and employees of Arsenal Football Club that they remain long-term holders of their interests in the club. To this effect, they have entered into an agreement not to dispose of their shares for at least one year and have confirmed that they intend to retain their interests on the expiration of this period."

Whether it's Kevin Nolan banging on about an England cap or Ashley Cole "trembling with anger" over his £60,000-a-week snub, footballers have long been prone to the odd whinge. Dwelling as long as it does on the back pages, the Mill quickly learnt to filter out the vast majority of these plaintive protests, but every now and then along comes a bellyache so deeply drenched with melodrama, so fantastically self-pitying, that even we are forced to hold our hands up in awe. Ladies and gentlemen pray quiet, please, for the words of Julio Baptista.

"The teams from the north of England are terrible," blubs our hero to the Times today. "When we play them I have counted their centre-backs booting up to 30 long balls upfield per game. The weather over here is killing me. We'll get one day of sunshine for every 30 days of rain, and it is driving me to despair. My girlfriend and my mother are frightened about not seeing the sun in England."Premiership football is very hard. I am Brazilian and I enjoy playing the ball, making clever touches and taking bicycle kicks. Arsene Wenger does not forbid me from doing them, but the game is so fast I don't even have time to think about them. The moment you stop to think, someone has taken the ball off you and knocked you to the ground. Over here they value a corner kick more than a fancy flick."

Suffice to say Julio - who some may remember waxing lyrical in the famously sunny month of January about how happy he was at the Emirates - does not want to be back at the Emirates next season. And that few Arsenal fans will miss watching him "stop to think" before shanking the ball into Row Z.

Irgendwie nett

Auch wenn Arsenal in dieser Saison wieder Manchester United oder Chelsea den Vortritt um den Titel der englischen Premier League lassen muss, so können die "Gunners" vielleicht nächste Saison mit königlicher Unterstützung doch wieder groß aufspielen.

Wie die englische "Sun" berichtet, hält Queen Elizabeth II. dem 1886 von einer Gruppe von Arbeitern der Rüstungsfabrik Royal Arsenal gegründeten Klub die Daumen. Unterstützung für den Londoner Klub liegt bei den Royals offensichtlich in der Familie, bereits die 2002 verstorbene Königinmutter war ein Arsenal-Fan.

Seit 50 Jahren ein "Gunner"

Die "Sun" zitiert einen ungenannten Vertrauten der 81-jährigen Königin: "Ihre Majestät ist seit 50 Jahren Arsenal-Anhängerin. Auch ihre Mutter war eine bekennende Unterstützerin des Klubs, hauptsächlich auf Grund ihrer Bewunderung für den ehemaligen Arsenal-Spieler Denis Compton."

Compton, der für England auch Cricket spielte, gewann 1948 mit den Londonern die Meisterschaft und holte 1950 den FA-Cup.

Dass die Queen allerdings, so wie in dieser ORF-Montage, den "Gunners" öffentlich zujubelt, darf zumindest in Frage gestellt werden. Ein Fußballfan dürfte sie jedoch sein.

Die Queen kennt Fabregas

Das englische Staatoberhaupt sei sehr an dem Traditionsklub interessiert, sagt Arsenal-Mittelfeldspieler Cesc Fabregas in dem "Sun"-Bericht.

"Ich glaube, die Königin ist am Fußball interessiert und sie hat uns auch gesagt, dass sie Arsenal-Fan sei", berichtete der Spanier von einem offiziellen Empfang der Mannschaft im Buckingham Palace. "Sie hat genau gewusst, wer ich bin, und wir haben auch einige Worte gewechselt."

Tee mit der Königin

Spieler und Offizielle waren Mitte Februar zum Tee in die Residenz der Queen geladen, die auf Grund von Rückenproblemen ihren Besuch zur Eröffnung des neuen Arsenal-Stadions im Oktober 2006 absagen hatte müssen.

Elizabeth II. hätte gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann Prinz Philip das Emirates-Stadion als neue Heimat von Arsenal feierlich eröffnen sollen.

Ärzte hatten der Königin geraten, sich wegen der in ihrem schottischen Landsitz Balmoral erlittenen Verletzung zurückzuhalten. Nur "widerstrebend" soll die Monarchin auf die Stadioneröffnung verzichtet haben.

Arsenal sought to reassure fans about the club's direction yesterday with a letter from the chairman, Peter Hill-Wood, sent to all shareholders, saying he will shortly meet the American billionaire Stan Kroenke but effectively arguing that the club has no financial need for a takeover.

Hill-Wood wrote that this season's move to the 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium makes Arsenal "comparable with the largest football clubs in the world" and that "funds are available" to strengthen the squad in the summer. He stated that the board's policy of spending money from ticket sales, television and commercial activities is "the most sustainable way" to run the club, "very much in line with [the manager] Arsène Wenger's approach".

The letter did not shed more light on the departure last week of the vice-chairman David Dein, who is believed to have been sympathetic to a Kroenke takeover.

Wenger will hold talks next week to determine Julio Baptista's future. The Brazilian arrived on loan from Real Madrid last summer with José Antonio Reyes moving in the opposite direction. Both have indicated they would like to make their moves permanent. "Nothing is decided," said Wenger. "I will meet [baptista's] agents next week and Real Madrid a bit later. Reyes coming back can happen. I have nothing against that, but Reyes does not want to come back to English football, he prefers to stay in Spain."

The Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has agreed a one-year extension to his contract. "I see him as a top-class goalkeeper and [Manuel] Almunia is a top-class goalkeeper so it will be a battle [for the No1 jersey] at some stage," said Wenger.

Wenger confirmed that he had received applications for the post of director of football, created following the departure of Dein. "It will happen in the summer," he said. "He will be appointed by me but it will not necessarily be a friend of mine. It will be somebody who will do the job well because if I go one day the guy has still to work here. I am looking for somebody with experience of negotiating a little bit. Somebody who understands football and who agrees with the values we want to hold at the club."
