Senderos Arsenals Spieler des Monats

LONDON – Philippe Senderos steht nicht nur bei Köbi Kuhn hoch im Kurs: Die Fans von Arsenal wählten den 19-jährigen Verteidiger zum Spieler des Monats.

Mit 61 Prozent aller Stimmen fiel die Wahl auf Senderos so deutlich aus wie auf keinen anderen Spieler in dieser Saison. In allen fünf Partien im März, in denen der stämmige Romand als Innenverteidiger zum Einsatz kam, kassierten die Gunners keinen einzigen Gegentreffer.

«Das war ein grossartiger Monat, den Philippe nie vergessen wird», freute sich Senderos´ Klubtrainer Arsène Wenger. Im Ligaspiel gegen Norwich musste der Franzose allerdings auf seinen Schweizer Rohdiamanten verzichten. Wegen einer leichten Muskelverletzung am Oberschenkel, die eine Paue von zwei bis drei Tagen bedingt, wurde Senderos geschont.

Wenger welcomes back Gilberto

Highbury will offer a special welcome to Gilberto tomorrow. After more than six months out with a fractured vertebrae, the Brazilian is set to resume his role in central midfield.

It is fair to say that absence has made Arsenal hearts grow fonder of the quiet, efficient and affable 28-year-old. However his manager never needed convincing.

“Gilberto is a quiet guy,” said Arsène Wenger. “He never wants special attention but people forget he is a world champion.

“Sometimes there are players who have a real team attitude - a discreet one, not a flashy one — and sometimes these kinds of players are not rated as much as they should be.

“The positive thing [about his time out] is that when he did not play people realised how important he was.

“Gilberto makes the game fluent and simple. He does the cleaning work and that is always important in the house.

“At the same time I would not want to diminish the merits of Mathieu Flamini and Cesc Fabregas. We have still had a reasonable season because they have done very well. That was unexpected. But at some stage, when we did not have Edu, Gilberto and Vieira, we were very young.”

And for all their abundant abilities, there is one thing Flamini and Fabregas do not have — height. (Though, at 17, the Spaniard is still growing). Wenger believes the lack of another strapping six-footer in the Arsenal area has hindered his side in defending set-pieces.

“Gilberto is good in the air and some stage we were a little bit too small,” said the manager. “You suffer a bit less on set-pieces when you have Gilberto and Vieira in there.

“If you look at the statistics, we are one of the teams with the least crosses against us but the percentage we have conceded on crosses is three times higher than any other team. That means we were not always able to compete with their size.

“For example Charlton had something like 97 crosses against and we had 36 but we conceded the same amount of goals on headers. In this area Gilberto’s absence has played a big part.”

Wenger hints at Pennant deal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hinted that a deal could soon be struck with Birmingham for the sale of Jermaine Pennant.

Pennant made a playing return on Saturday, having only been released on parole from prison earlier in the week.

Wenger has already stated that Pennant has no future at Highbury and his comments in his programme notes on Saturday suggest a deal could soon be struck with Blues to turn his loan deal into a permanent arrangement.

"Finally a word about Jermaine Pennant, who was released from prison this week," wrote Wenger.

"I think that now it is more than likely that his future will be at Birmingham rather than at Arsenal and a decision on that could be made before the end of the season."

Birmingham chief Steve Bruce stated he would stand by Pennant when he was sentenced to three months in prison for motoring offences and the Blues chief will be keen to bring a swift conclusion to the transfer.

na ja, also er hat sicher auch seinen anteil an diesen titel, aber so richtig überzeugen konnte er mich bei der WM 2002 nicht.

aber ich glaube schon, dass er arsenal helfen kann, denn immerhin war er ja auch bei der serie 49 spiele in folge ungeschlagen zu sein beteiligt.

Lehmann für zwei Europapokalspiele gesperrt!

Die Uefa hat Jens Lehmann von Arsenal London für zwei Europapokal-Spiele gesperrt.

Der deutsche National-Keeper hatte im März nach dem Aus des englischen Meisters im Achtelfinale der Champions League gegen den FC Bayern München im Spielertunnel Wasser in Richtung von Schiedsrichter Massimo De Santis (ITA) sowie eines Assistenten gespritzt.

Die Uefa wertete dieses "respektlose" Verhalten des 35-Jährigen als "vorsätzliche Belästigung" des Referees und belegte ihn deshalb mit der Sperre.

Es ist aber bedenklich, wieviele Spieler diese Saison bei Arsenal schon nachträglich gesperrt wurden.

Groin injury rules Henry out of next two games

Thierry Henry will be missing for the next two games because of his groin injury.

The French striker was sidelined for the FA Cup Semi-Final last week and Wednesday’s top of the table clash with Chelsea. He is now certain to be out of the North London derby at Highbury on Monday and the trip to West Brom a week later.

It could be even longer if scans on Friday bring bad news.

“I don’t know how long Thierry will be out,” said Arsène Wenger. “But it will certainly be the next two games. I cannot tell you much more because I do not know more at the moment. He has a scan today and that will tell us. “

Freddie Ljungberg will be missing on Monday as well.

“He still has this pain in the hip,” said the manager. “He will have a deeper check today and we will know more tomorrow. But he is out for Monday because he has not practiced at all.”

The Swedish midfielder had a similar injury a couple of years ago but, happily, these are not related.

“It is not the same,” said Wenger. “We have checked that. This is a different type of injury to the one before and it is not linked to this one.”
