themanwho Silver Torah Geschrieben 25.

Juli 2004 Chelsea 3 Roma 0 Friday, Jul 30, 2004 Another impressive team performance with goals from Joe Cole, Mateja Kezman and substitute Didier Drogba wasn’t even overshadowed by Kezman’s sending off. Cole had been looking sharp for the first ten minutes, taking one wicked corner from the left, when he received a wonderful flick from Eidur Gudjohnsen. He played a one-two with Gérémi who supplied a perfect chip behind the central defence, and the fleet-footed Cole got through them to tuck the ball under the advancing goalkeeper Carlo Zotti. Four minutes after being the hero Cole was the sinner when he was booked for two bites at Olivier Dacourt’s ankles, unnecessary challenges in midfield. Chelsea began to dominate, and Kezman, playing on the shoulder of Roma’s defence, was only fractionally offside when charging through. He should have scored, however, midway through the half when wonderful interplay between Cole and Gudjohnsen set him up from 15 metres, but his left-footed effort was well palmed away by diving Zotti. Such has been Kezman’s form that it was a real surprise when he didn’t net. Gérémi, playing his second game in a row on the right of midfield, again supplied the opportunities from his favourite position with a wonderful chipped cross which found Kezman arriving free, but the new Number 9 surprisingly sliced his attempted left-footed volley badly wide. Two minutes later Kezman was on the right to receive Gudjohnsen’s fine pass, and his low cross was cleared by the desperately diving Philippe Mexes from Cole five metres out. Cole was then robbed in midfield by the diving Francesco Totti with a particularly physical challenge. Gérémi dived in with an air of retaliation, Kezman held Totti back and both Chelsea players got booked. Totti had an on-target free-kick after Claude Makelele had fouled just outside the area, but it didn’t truly test Petr Cech who held it with a slow dive. Dellas became the referee’s fourth booking when he tripped Cole just before half-time. Chelsea kicked off the second-half with Drogba making his first appearance and a much changed side. It was: Cech; Ferreira, Gallas, Terry, Bridge; Gérémi, Smertin, Lampard, Robben; Kezman, Drogba. Kezman dropped back to fulfil the link role and rounded Mexes after two minutes before finding Drogba who pulled a left-footer wide of the far post from an acute angle. Roma’s half-time substitutions left them with the same back four, but they took off right-sided midfielder Virga and switched to 4-3-1-2 with Totti withdrawing behind Delvecchio and substitute Montella. Alexeï Smertin had watched a very assured first-half from Makelele, but after firing one shot just over he left left-back Leando Cufre lost on the flank with a turn and burst of pace, and pulled a good low pass across the face of the penalty area which Drogba blazed over. Record signing Drogba was in the thick of the action. He won a free-kick out on the right which Arjen Robben floated in and his powerful header down was flicked over with a good reflex save by Zotti. The ball, however, had gone straight at the goalkeeper. A minute past the hour Roma sent on Corvia for Delvecchio and suddenly the action really kicked in. First Kezman broke through one on one but Zotti saved his shot. Then, within a minute, the Serb finally scored. Frank Lampard’s pass defeated Giuseppe Scurto, Robben got almost to the by-line and pulled back what is already a trademark low ball for Kezman to fire left-footed through the goalkeeper. Two-nil. Three minutes later Dacourt disgracefully dragged his studs down Robben’s calf as the winger, momentarily on the right, burst forward. Kezman pushed the Roma midfielder, Robben got up and did the same. The referee sent off Dacourt and Kezman. Furious John Terry remonstrated with the official but to no end. Chelsea switched to 4-4-1, Roma to 4-3-2, and Drogba scored his first Chelsea goal three minutes later. Lampard’s strong 25 metres shot bounced off careless Zotti and Drogba pounced. Three-nil. Roma made a host of substitutions. Damien Duff made his comeback following injury as Robben felt the effects of the foul, and the Irishman looked to have no problems. Lampard was booked for a hefty challenge on Curfe, and at the death Petr Cech flicked a long range shot over. Roma had just two shots on target all game. The sendings off do not lead to suspensions in the series. The pass, pass, pass, goodbye style of play was again triumphant. chelseafc.com Das Spiel in voller Länge um 17:00 Uhr auf DSF.

Funkmaster romazone.org Geschrieben 16. August 2004 Match report: Chelsea 1 Man United 0 Sunday, Aug 15, 2004 Chelsea have recorded our first back-to-back home wins against Manchester United for 13 years and as last season it was by the narrowest of margins. In a tight, hard-fought game of few chances, it was the boot of Eidur Gudjohnsen that made the crucial difference. José Mourinho handed debuts to six players, Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira, Alexeï Smertin and Didier Drogba from the start, Ricardo Carvalho and Mateja Kezman as subs, so it would have been a lot to ask for a performance of total cohesion and understanding but this Chelsea side had just enough, both in determination and trouble for the unfamiliar Man U back line, to win the day. Played to an ear-buzzing atmosphere, there was a frantic opening to the game. The first half-chance came soon, an off-target header by O’Shea running in front of Ferreira. In the tenth minute Man United had another aerial effort, Giggs finding Smith this time who headed over the bar. But despite those early scares, it was Chelsea who found the nerve-settling breakthrough. It came from a counter-attack, Fortune totally missing a clearance out of the Chelsea area. It allowed Gérémi to break with pace before steadying himself and lofting the ball into Drogba who towering above all around, headed down to the supporting Gudjohnsen. Initially it looked as if the knock down was destined to run out of play but Gudjohnsen made up the ground, lofted over Howard towards goal and then chased in. Keane racing back was too late to clear and Chelsea were ahead. Drogba himself was almost in on goal a minute later after the hard-working Smertin’s pass had sent him away, but Howard this time was able to disposes as the Chelsea striker attempted to go past the keeper. Man United’s threat was not quelled with Giggs causing problems as he roamed away from the left wing and there were a couple of stressful moments just after the half-hour mark. Cech and his defenders got in the way of each other when dealing with one cross and then as Man U kept the pressure on, the ball was worked into Scholes who fortunately drove wide. At the other end Drogba was causing problems, particularly for Roy Keane in central defence who was finding it hard to cope with the pace and power of his new adversary. When Drogba ran at him on the edge of the area, Keane’s only resort was a body check. From the resulting free-kick Lampard was a few yards wide so it was a single goal advantage that Chelsea took into the break. The opening stages of the second-half saw plenty more classic Premiership-paced battling but sights on goal were few and far between. Drogba had both opposition central defenders struggling to match him in the air at times while Howard had his turn to be the victor in another fifty-fifty chase with Gudjohnsen. On 69 minutes came the first substitution, the fresh legs of Mateja Kezman replacing the well exercised ones of Didier Drogba. Three minutes later Man U introduced a new striker of their own, Diego Forlan replacing Djemba-Djemba. Almost instantly it looked to be opening up for the long-haired one when Giggs knocked the ball away from Ferreira but Cech was sharp enough to smoother. When Forlan was able to shoot a couple of minutes later having beaten the offside flag, he blasted embarrassingly off-target. Chelsea were being forced back. We were defending deep and the visitors were sensing an equaliser. On 80 minutes they had a great chance to score it, Giggs evading Gallas to meet Smith’s cross but heading wide of the post from ten yards out. Mourinho responded instantly by adding Scott Parker to the central midfield, Gudjohnsen making way so leaving Kezman to go it alone up front. Carvalho was soon added to the midfield battle in place of Gérémi while Bellion and Richardson came on for Miller and Fortune, both managers using their full resources in these days of early season fitness. The closing three minutes of injury time could have been a worrying time for Chelsea given the period just before but in fact it was Chelsea who had Man U panicking with a couple of breaks from our half. The full time whistle came with Ferguson’s men pressed right back in their penalty area. This was not yet a Chelsea team into full stride but in the month of the Olympic Games, we have left the starting blocks well.
