Hier das offizielle Statement zur 1:2 Niederlage bei Aston Villa.

Aston Villa 2 - 1 Chelsea

Saturday, Apr 19, 2003

Chelsea plummeted to a first defeat in five League games with one of our most disappointing displays of the season. Marcus Allback did the damage with a goal in each half. John Terry pulled one back in the closing minutes.

A searing, freezing wind blew into Chelsea¹s faces from the outset. Graham Taylor¹s long-ball approach, allied to the superior technique of resurrected first-teamer Allback and the tricky Vassell meant that the home side adapted far better throughout.

Chelsea, beginning with the oft-suggested pairing of Carlton Cole and Gianfranco Zola upfront, and with Quique De Lucas in right midfield, never achieved the control expected of a team looking to secure a Champions League slot against one looking to avoid relegation peril.

Although Cole and Zola occasionally linked well, with the Italian managing three half-decent shots on target in the first 45 minutes, the biggest concern was how easily our tentative midfield was bypassed down the flanks by Samuel and Barry, and how awkwardly our central defence dealt with Villa¹s sparky attackers.

The home side had already opened up Chelsea twice before Allback notched his first on 10 minutes. Then Barry sent a cross-field ball to Edwards, who clipped in a cross into the box that Barry, making up ground unnoticed, chested down. Allback forced himself ahead of Terry to drive home.

Enckelman¹s job was made easy by Chelsea¹s lack of quality, Zola, whose best chance was a header when picked out smartly by Mario Melchiot, not the only offender. Le Saux should have done better after cleverly working an opening in the box but his chip to Cole was wastefully high.

Claudio Ranieri did not wait to see how his side dealt with the wind at their backs in the second half, switching Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for the unlucky Melchiot, Zola to left midfield, Le Saux to right full-back, and Gallas to right. It didn¹t work.

Within minutes, Villa¹s penetration resumed, Terry falling after Vassell¹s flick to allow Edwards to trundle alone towards goal. The young right back lifted the ball deftly over Carlo, but harmlessly on to the bar.

Then Staunton, on for the injured Gudjonsson, shaved the post after Allback had shielded the ball from Terry. The Norwegian himself scuffed a clear shot from the edge of the box after good work from Vassell.

Yet Chelsea¹s best chance of an equaliser soon followed. Cole¹s trickery on the byeline created a great opening for De Lucas bursting into the box, but his rash shot from six yards out with the goal at his mercy lacked direction.

Midway through the half Ranieri went for it. Celestine Babayaro for Le Saux and Eidur Gudjohnsen for Zola brought about a shuffle to 4-3-3. With Villa at last losing out in individual challenges, Chelsea¹s awkward attacking brought scant reward. Hasselbaink drove harmlessly from distance twice. A twisting run from Lampard, steering clear of Leonhardsen, ended with a strong shot just wide.

But a spectacular overhead kick just off-target from Allback that would have capped an excellent display showed that the cutting edge was still Villa¹s. And with just over ten minutes Edwards slipped away from Babayaro and drove a speculative ball into the box. Vassell outjumped Terry and Allback, letting the ball pass him and easily holding off Desailly, drive comfortably past Cudicini.

A mark of this season¹s Chelsea has been the never-say-die spirit that has brought so many late goals. With a minute remaining a corner that has worked well all season brought hope to the loud Chelsea following in a near-40,000 crowd.

Hasselbaink¹s low kick was flicked on by Petit and John Terry powered home from close range. That is his sixth of the season, an excellent haul.

Two minutes of added time brought a free kick down the Villa right, Leonhardsen¹s protestation leading the referee to caution the Norwegian and move the ball forward to just outside their box. Hasselbaink¹s goalbound strike arrowed through the wall but hit Babayaro on the calf and was cleared.

With Newcastle and Everton losing and Liverpool winning, it was a day for the red half of Liverpool. But we are still fourth, one point behind the Geordies, two ahead of the Reds. With Everton arriving on Monday, there has to be an immediate and appropriate response from the team and the manager.

RANIERI WRITES OFF BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE

Eingefügtes Bild

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri said he would not be dwelling on his side's poor performance as Aston Villa dented the Blues' Champions League hopes with victory in the Midlands.

Swedish striker Marcus Allback scored twice, and though the visitors managed a late consolation through John Terry, they were never at the races.

The result leaves Chelsea just two points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool and four ahead of next opponents Everton, and Ranieri believes the best way to maintain a charge for Europe is to forget about a bad day at the office.

"It was not a good game for us," said the Italian. "Aston Villa played very, very well - better than us.

"They were better in every challenge, they read the game well and dealt with the wind, which made it difficult for us.

"It's important now to wipe away this defeat and concentrate on our next game against Everton."

Team News vor dem wichtigen Spiel gegen Neverton:

Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri will check on the fitness of three players before finalising his side for the Premiership Bank Holiday clash with Everton.

Ranieri will assess the condition of Jody Morris (thigh), Jesper Gronkjaer (groin) and Mario Stanic (Achilles) ahead of a match the Blues must win to maintain their Champions League chances.

All three missed the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday when Chelsea produced a performance described by Ranieri as "our worst of the season."

Chelsea are now only two points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool who defeated Everton in Saturday's Merseyside derby.

Canadian striker Tomasz Radzinski has only a slim chance of being fit for Everton's trip to Stamford Bridge as they bid to bounce back from the Merseyside derby defeat.

Radzinski did not even make the bench of the Goodison Park clash despite being in training all week as he recovers from a groin injury.

The problem means Moyes, who has expressed concern over Wayne Rooney's dip in form in the last two games, may well not be able to rest the youngster at Stamford Bridge, although he could play Kevin Campbell and Duncan Ferguson together up front.

Chelsea (from): Cudicini, Desailly, Lampard, Gallas, Le Saux, Melchiot, Petit, De Luca, Zola, Terry, Cole, De Goey, Babayaro, Hasselbaink, Zenden, Gudjohnsen, Morris, Gronkjaer, Stanic.

Everton (from): Wright, Yobo, Stubbs, Weir, Unsworth, Naysmith, Pembridge, Gravesen, Carsley, Gemmill, Watson, Rooney, Campbell, Ferguson, Radzinski, Li Tie, Simonsen, Alexandersson, Hibbert.

I need Zola because he's a great player and Chelsea's business card
