SUNDIN PUMPED

When training camp opens, the captain of the Maple Leafs might have to wear one of those lapel stickers that says, "HELLO, My Name Is Mats." There have been so many big changes to the Toronto roster the past two weeks, Sundin's new look will take some by surprise after a year-long lockout. "I really feel on top of the world right now," Sundin told Sweden's Sport Bladet yesterday. "I needed a break from hockey."

Sundin used the time to work hard on his physique, trying to keep ahead of Father Time now that he's 34. He's trim and well tanned from indulging in his second love, golf, and has cut his hair even shorter, giving him a more intimidating Mark Messier look. He did not spend the winter with his club team Djurgarden or join the Swedish nationals at the world championships, no doubt costing him fans at home, but Toronto could be the beneficiary in the next 82 games.

"This was a correct decision and I don't regret not playing," Sundin said. "This was my first winter without hockey since I was six or seven years old. I never had a long break, and when this chance to recuperate (came), I just needed to take advantage of it and take care of my body. "I'm hungry, feeling fresh and I think I even got mentally stronger."

No sooner was the shocking news about losing Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk and likely Alex Mogilny relayed to him in Sweden, than he heard about the coming of Jeff O'Neill, Jason Allison and surely the biggest shocker, Eric Lindros. "I'm positive Lindros will be a great addition," Sundin said. "Everyone knows that when he is in form, he is a world-class player. For him, it's all about being healthy and off the injured reserve list."

Speculation on whether the two towering centres would play on the same line began on the day of the Lindros signing. Lindros said that would be fine, but coach Pat Quinn said on Friday that his first inclination is to play Sundin, Lindros and Allison one, two, three in the middle and try and find ice time for all.

"(Playing with Lindros) would be awesome, it would really create open ice, but at this stage no line formations are set," said Sundin. "I am a strong believer in Allison. And after that we (just signed) Staffan Kronwall, Alexander Steen and (Mikael) Tellqvist could be back, too. I'm looking forward to have a few Swedish teammates."

One development Sundin didn't like was Forsberg choosing to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers. "I really didn't like that he ended up there," Sundin said. "Flyers are one of our biggest rivals and Forsberg will be a big contributor for them. It will make it harder for us, but I guess it will be some fun to play him more often."

Sundin is back on the ice now, training hard with Djurgarden, eyeing the start of Leafs' training camp in about four weeks. "I started on ice on Aug. 1 and it felt great," he said. "I'm playing the best hockey of my life."

Mogilny bei den Devils - :heul::schluchz: x/ :suicide:

(AP) - Alexander Mogilny, the right winger who earned a Stanley Cup ring with New Jersey, signed a two-year contract Tuesday night to return to the Devils.

Mogilny came to the Devils late in the 1999-00 season and helped New Jersey to its second championship with four goals and three assists in the playoffs.

He came back strong the following season and had the third best offensive year of his career, posting 43 goals and 83 points in 75 games. But he left in the off-season, signing a free agent deal with Toronto where he spent the last three seasons.

Mogilny had other options this time around in the free-agent market, but jumped at the chance to return to the Devils.

"New Jersey has always been a front-runner for me and I always wanted to come back," he said Tuesday night from California.

Mogilny was limited to just 37 games during the 2003-04 regular season following a second operation on his arthritic left hip. There were reports that he might quit playing, but the 36-year-old said he never considered retirement.

He has been skating all summer in Russia and Los Angeles and convinced Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello that he has completely healed.

"We're 100 per cent comfortable that he is 100 per cent healthy," Lamoriello said.

Mogilny spent his first six NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and had a breakout year in 1992-93 when he netted an NHL-best 76 goals and set up 51 others. He then had 55 goals and 52 assists during the 1995-96 season - his first of four-plus with the Vancouver Canucks.

"If there's any one player capable of breaking a game open at any given time, he certainly is that. His skating certainly is exceptional. We know what he can bring as far as making other people better."

Mogilny worked very well with young forward Scott Gomez during his first stint with the Devils and will now provide offensive insurance should Patrik Elias be out for any length of time following a bout with hepatitis A.

Elias is believed to have fallen ill while playing in Russia during the NHL lockout. He lost 30 pounds and was hospitalized in the Czech Republic for almost a month earlier this year.

"We all know what he has and we all know what the time frame is," Lamoriello said. "It could be short, it could be a little longer. ... It's the doctors' call, not our call."

Mogilny has 461 goals and 1,007 points in 956 NHL games.

"We're a better hockey team today with him in the lineup than we are without him," Lamoriello said.

The signing puts the Devils over the $39-million US salary cap, but less than the 10 per cent maximum. Lamoriello said the club will be back under the threshold before the Oct. 1 deadline.

New Jersey still has room to re-sign captain Scott Stevens should he decide to come back following concussion problems that cut short his last season.

Und noch ein Artikel, dieses Mal von Al Strachan. Almo

Quinn a fan of Mogilny

But Leafs couldn't afford him

KELOWNA, B.C. -- The Maple Leafs have only enjoyed limited success in recent years, but one of the players who gave fans the hope of more was Alexander Mogilny.

Ken Hitchcock, the coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, had no hesitation in saying that during his team's first-round, seven-game victory over the Leafs in 2003, Mogilny was the Toronto player who scared him the most.

Without Mogilny in the lineup in 2004, the Leafs again were eliminated by the Flyers, this time in six games.

Now, Mogilny has been snapped up by the New Jersey Devils as a free agent.

"Good for him," Leafs coach Pat Quinn said yesterday. "He wasn't sure if he could play. He tried to play hurt for us (the previous season) and often gave us some really good times.

"I was happy to be associated with Alex Mogilny and wish him all the best. He's an outstanding player and he's a wonderful fellow, too."

Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr. showed no interest in getting Mogilny back, and from all reports Mogilny was ambivalent about returning to the Leafs. While he enjoyed many aspects of the organization, he had nothing but disdain for some of his Toronto teammates.

He had to undergo two hip operations, and after the second he told his friends that he had no intention of playing professional hockey again.

He wanted to get his hip back in order so that he could pursue his passion for golf, but his desire to play hockey had gone. He put on weight and let himself get out of condition.

But in the post-operation rehabilitation, he started to feel good again. His spirits lifted and he went back onto the ice, first in Europe, then in Los Angeles with some other National Hockey League players, including Mario Lemieux.

The word got out that Mogilny clearly was capable of playing at the NHL level and as a result, some teams started to make overtures.

The Washington Capitals were in the running for a while, but eventually, the battle came down to two teams: The Devils and Florida Panthers.

Florida GM Mike Keenan wanted Mogilny badly. With Joe Nieuwendyk and Gary Roberts, two of Mogilny's friends already signed, Mogilny would have been an excellent addition.

As a result, he kept matching the Devils' offers and pushing up the price. Finally, when the Devils went to $7 million over two years, the Panthers pulled out.

When he heard how much Devils GM Lou Lamoriello had coughed up, goaltender Martin Brodeur -- about to become Mogilny's teammate again -- laughed.

"Lou wouldn't give him that after we won the Cup," he said with a chuckle. "Now we have a new system, he gives him that."

Quinn said the Leafs didn't get involved in the bidding for the obvious reason: "We didn't have any money left."

But he thinks it's a good move for the Devils.

"It's probably a little bit of a gamble, " he said, "but I think his patience and the fact that he went overseas and worked out and discovered in his own mind that his hip is better than it has been in two or three years, and that he can make the kind of contribution he has made for a while in this league were all considerations.

"Obviously, he knows the people in Jersey so it looks like a good fit for them.

"Without a doubt, as a coach I loved him." Quinn said. "I've had him for a while and to me, he's one of the most talented guys I've had. We just didn't have the room to make that move.

"He's the kind of guy who brings levels up from other people. When you're around guys who a have a high level, they bring you along. He was the kind of guy we could put anywhere. We could have put him on defence."

Now that opportunity goes to the Devils.

Everything appeared to be OK. Karel went through the whole summer camp, worked as hard as never. He was absolutely excited and eager to play again. We were negotiating new contract for Karel and it was apparent the Maple Leafs wanted Karel back. However, after one workout Karel felt some dizziness and indisposition. First medical check suggested it was consequence of hard work he had gone through during the summer or some consequences of his viral illness he had experienced year ago...." said Pilars agent Mr. Spalenka.

Pilar underwent some treatment in Prague but a special check by Montreal based specialist was arranged immediately. It was the very same specialist who as the only one successfully determined Karels heart problems years ago. The results showed some similar heart problems Karel already experienced, although this time it is in much lesser extent. Spalenka confirmed that the Maple Leafs care about Karel very much, covered all costs and still want to sign Karel....

Montreal specialist prepared some sort of therapy and treatment for Karel. Karel went back to Prague and would be checked by Czech specialists and once a while he visits Montreal to undergo some other tests. As for today, it is obvious that Karel will not be able to play for at least three months. "If everything goes well, Karel could start skating at around Christmas time. The Montreal specialist expressed optimism about Karels return on ice," said Spalenka.

"Karel was destroyed upon hearing this news," said Spalenka. "He was so eager to play and than this. He was down, however, after last meeting with doctor in Montreal there is some hope again. Karel is determined to stick with the therapy." said Spalenka. "The most important thing is that his ilness is curable."
