Belak, Newbury won't back down

A night earlier, with New Year Eve spirits flowing, you could've understood Wade Belak and Kris Newbury getting carried away with thoughts of scoring big goals and fighting Zdeno Chara.

But the two Maple Leafs' plumbers actually did both last evening, going on pure adrenalin.

Capping off a wild shift with fourth-line pal Ben Ondrus, they hemmed the Boston Bruins in, survived a pitch battle with Chara, produced Newbury's first-period goal and found themselves embroiled with the NHL's biggest player in a scrum.

"My mind went blank," Belak said. "I just remember getting worked over by Chara (losing his helmet in the process), but we did a good job keeping the puck cycled low."

As the Leafs rushed Newbury to celebrate the goal, Boston's Shean Donovan interceded, bringing all players into the conflict. The6-foot-5 Belak expected the worst as he prepared to take on the 6-foot-9, 260-pound Chara, but to his amazement, 5-foot-10 Newbury got there first.

"He's my little protector, a real bulldog out there," Belak said with a laugh. "We both grabbed him at the end, but neither one of us really wanted to fight him, because we were dead tired.

"He's a big, strong man. He was definitely tossing me around out there. I'd better go lift some weights. It was just hold on and go our separate ways."

Newbury doubted his own sanity.

"When I realized who it was, I knew I'd kind of made a mistake," he said. "But I'll go to my teammate's defence anytime."

Chara, who scored Boston's only goal last night, has been at odds with the Leafs since the Battle of Ontario as an Ottawa Senator. It didn't help that last night was the sixth meeting of the Bruins and Leafs in less than two months.

"That could be part of it, but it's obvious that these games are very important now in the standings," Chara said.

Gerüchteweise haben die Leafs versucht Petr Nedved via Waivers zu bekommen. Gottseidank ist ihnen Edmonton (schlechtere Point Percentage) zuvorgekommen. Die Ottawa Senators hatten auch einen Claim für ihn abgegeben.

35 Jahre, Gehalt von 2,4 Mio. US-$. Davon zahlt die Hälfte Philly, also immer noch 1,2 Mille.

Letztes Jahr 7 Tore mit Phoenix und Philly, diese Saison hatte er 1G/6A und verbrachte die letzte Zeit beim Farmteam der Flyers. Der FLYERS.

Da seh ich lieber den Newbury.

Gut dass Welly wieder da ist. Trotzdem wär ein Defensivstürmer wie Peca noch nett.

Players on a team's active roster, Injured Reserve, Injured Non Roster or Non Roster as of 5:00pm New York time on a particular day count toward the team's upper limit; in addition, if a player practices or travels with his NHL team or plays in an NHL game prior to 5:00pm and is then assigned to the minors, he will still count for that day.

Bezüglich Langzeitverletzungen:

LONG-TERM INJURIES

A player is considered to have a bona-fide long-term injury if, in the opinion of the team, the player has an injury which will cause him to miss at least 10 games and 24 days. Even in such cases, the player's salary will continue to count against the team's Upper Limit. This is mentioned at least three times in the CBA, and is repeated in Article 50.10(a):

All Player Salary and Bonuses paid to Players on an NHL Active Roster, Injured Reserve or Non Roster that are Unfit to Play – being either injured or suffering from an illness – shall be counted against a Club's Upper Limit, Actual Club Salary and Averaged Club Salary, as well as against the Players' Share.

For players with an LTI, the team is allowed to exceed the cap by up to the amount of the injured player's salary with as many replacement players as needed, provided that when the injured player is activated the team comes into compliance with the cap immediately. The team does not get to automatically tack on the amount of the injured player's salary to the Upper Limit - an example as illustrated in Article 50.10(d) of the new CBA (reported in several places) illustrates this point:

(a) Illustration: A Player with a Player Salary of $1.5 million becomes unfit to play for more than 24 days and 10 games. At the time the Player becomes unfit to play, the Club has an Averaged Club Salary of $39.5 million, and the Upper Limit is $40 million. The Club may replace the unfit-to-play Player with another Player of Players with an aggregate Player Salary and Bonuses of up to $1.5 million. The first $500,000 of such replacement salary and bonuses shall count toward the Club's Average Club Salary, bringing the Averaged Club Salary to the Upper Limit. The Club may then exceed the Upper Limit by up to another $1 million as a result of the replacement salary and bonuses. However, if the unfit-to-play Player once again becomes fit to play, and the Club has not otherwise created any Payroll Room during the interim period, then the Player shall not be permitted to rejoin the Club until such time as the Club reduces its Averaged Club Salary to below the Upper Limit.

So - just because a player has a long-term injury does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. A team with a payroll of $33 million that has a player making $4 million get injured doesn't gain any extra cap space as a result; a team at $37 million and a player at $4 million only gains $2 million (all pro-rated, of course). Relief toward the salary cap only comes if replacing an injured player's salary would push the team over the cap, and the amount of relief is limited to the amount the team would go over the cap - not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

Mal im Champions anfragen. Andere Möglichkeit wäre das Billabong, die haben auch alle möglichen US-Sender. Sonst muß sich wohl eine gute Seele hier finden.

Stimmt so nicht ganz - Nedved kostet seinem jetzigen Team 'nur' ~600k. Hälfte der Saison ist gespielt, daher bekommt er auch nur mehr Gehalt für die Hälfte der Spiele.

Gerüchteweise wollten übrigens auch die Rangers Nedved claimen.

Wollts nur deshalb erwähnen, weil ich 600k für Nedved eigentlich nicht sooo wild find, auch wenns nur für die halbe Saison is. Er hätte ja im Prinzip alle Anlagen zu einem richtig guten Hockey Spieler - nur irgendwie schafft er es aus irgendwelchen Gründen nicht sein Potential abzurufen. Hat ja schon in früheren Jahren bewiesen dass er es eigentlich drauf hätte ...

Heut um 01:00 gegen die Bruins. Werd' mal schauen, dass ich Yahoo zum laufen bringe. Würde perfekt passen, von der Begegnung her und auch von der Uhrzeit her.

Tuckers verletzter Fuß ist nach der letzten Partie, wo er überraschenderweise dabei war, aufgegangen wie ein Germteig, sodaß er die Reise nach Boston nicht mitgemacht hat und somit heute definitiv fehlt.

Dafür konnte Ponikarovsky wieder mittrainieren und könnte in ca. 1 Woche zurückkehren.

Schau grad Leafs @ Bruins auf Comcast, fast ruckelfrei

Leafs eigentlich entgegen dem Spielverlauf im ersten PP zum 1-0 nach einem tic-tac-toe, abgeschlossen von Pohl. Bruins dann nach einem laschen Defensivspiel von Kaberle zum 1-1. Das 2-1 für die Bruins dann knapp vor Ende deren 1. PP ... FO-Gewinn Primeau, Schuss Alberts, redirected by Primeau, unhaltbar für Razor.

Battaglia gleich zu Beginn des 2. Drittels mit dem 2-2, generell heute die Line mit ihm und Pohl eindeutig am aktivsten und stärksten. Mittlerweile die Leafs besser im Spiel, eindeutige Steigerung gegenüber dem schwachen 1. Drittel. Steen befördert seinen eigenen Rebound von Thomas ins Netz, Stellungsfehler von Alberts/Chara. 3-2 Leafs. Boyes mit der Backhand an den Innenpfosten (feiner Move), Razor wehrt den Nachschuss von Chistov sensationell ab. Stuart verletzt sich an der Hand, schafft es nicht vom Eis, Battaglia staubt eiskalt ungedeckt zum 4-2 ab. Unmittelbar danach Steen mit dem 5-2 nach einem Fehler von Chara .. wunderbar gespielt von Sundin und O'Neill, a la tic-tac-toe. Nächster Schuss - nächstes Tor, diesmal Newbury. Thomas komplett am Sand, lässt einen leichten Schuss abprallen, White nimmt den Rebound von hinter dem Tor, der Rookie staubt ab. Die letzten drei Schüsse landeten alle im Netz der Bruins.

So, und jetzt bin ich outgeblacked worden .. egal, Spiel ist gelaufen
