Leeds United player arrested

Police have been given more time to question a Leeds United footballer over an alleged serious sex assault on a 20-year-old woman the city.

West Yorkshire Police say two men remain in custody after being detained on Monday in connection with the alleged attack.

One of the men is believed to be a Leeds United player who was arrested at the club's training ground at Thorp Arch, near Wetherby, in West Yorkshire on Tuesday.

Now officers have been given a further 12 hours to interview the player who spent Tuesday night in the city's Chapeltown Police Station.

The other man being questioned is not thought to be a footballer.

Officers investigating the case are understood to have spoken to a second player from the club at Wetherby Police station, but he was not arrested.

Police will not confirm any connection between their investigation and players at the Elland Road club, but Leeds United have issued a statement pledging full support to the investigation.

On Wednesday a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "All I can confirm is that two men are still in custody."

Forensic experts and police officers spent Tuesday evening carrying out a detailed search of a lay-by in open country on the main A58 Leeds to Wetherby Road.

The area was taped off and experts in protective suits carried out a meticulous search under spotlights.

Tell him he's dreaming
