AC Milan might not be in action in European competitions next season due to a financial dispute with Botafogo FC.

The Brazilian club made formal complaints to Football governing bodyFIFA and European football governing body UEFA over unpaid training compensation. Milan owes Botafogo €298,750 ($388,783) in overdue fees over the signing of its former academy player, Sergio Luiz Ceregatti, in 2010.

UEFA specified under the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations that clubs seeking a license to play in the Champions or Europa League must have “no overdue payables that refer to transfer activities that occurred prior to the previous 31 December.”

Training compensation is enforced by FIFA in order to re-compensate clubs that have developed a player between his 12th and 21st birthdays. The training compensation is included in the list of payables. Clubs are not permitted to enter any UEFA competition without the governing body’s License.

The Campeonato Paulista side claim that they trained Ceregatti for four years before he went on to join Milan. However, The Italian club is contesting that claim, and has argued that its liability should be restricted to a sum of €61,250 ($79,588) paid to the Brazilians in May 2011, following an initial challenge over unpaid training compensation.

Although the case is currently before the governing body’s Dispute Resolution Committee, FIFA adjudication has been delayed by Milan’s failure to properly submit documentary evidence translated into one of FIFA’s four official languages. Last week FIFA gave the Serie A club until April 17 to rectify that error.

A UEFA spokesman said: “When we receive a complaint we submit the complaint to the national association concerned so they can take this complaint into account while performing their own club licensing assessment. It is up to the national associations to check whether the clubs have fulfilled all their obligations on training compensation, solidarity contributions or transfer fees in due time.

“We become involved if those clubs have qualified for our competitions and if those clubs have received a license from their national association. Then, according to Financial Fair Play, those clubs would have to report to us about their obligations. We would cross check the complaints we have received with the information submitted to us by the club to determine whether the license had been correctly granted.”

The claim was submitted by Botafogo to UEFA Club Licensing last month. According to ONE World Sports, the website contacted a lawyer representing Milan and the lawyer denied that a case had been raised with the body. He also declined to explain the “defensive arguments” the Italian club had presented to FIFA.

“It is currently open before FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber a claim lodged by Botafogo against AC Milan in relation to the payment of Ceregatti training compensation,” said Milan director Lorenzo Cantamessa. “The reasons why AC Milan deems not to adhere ton the Botafogo claim are well explained and detailed in the brief that AC Milan sent FIFA DRC, which is the competent body to decide the matter.”

UEFA has also received complaints against Belgian clubs Standard Liege, Anderlecht and Germinal Beerschot, Hungary’s Honved Budapest from and Sweden’s IF Elfsborg in recent weeks.

After tonights match against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico Walter Mazzarri confirmed that he has decided to leave Napoli in an interview with Sky: “I have reached the end of my time at Napoli, it’s been a wonderful time, I’m very moved and I have already thanked all the lads in the team. I waited with telling everyone about my decision because I wanted to secure the second spot to avoid any potential psychological lapses by the team. I decided already before the match against Bologna, where we had to win. I was thinking about leaving last sumemr but instead decided to renew my contract for one more year.”

“Now I will consider any offers if they should arrive but I could also take it easy for a few months. The thing that can persuade me to sign a contract with a new club hinges on if the project make me enthusiastic but so far I haven’t spoken to any clubs out of respect for Napoli.”
