Calcio Debate: Why Milan Were Humiliated By Cesena, Rino Gattuso Must Not Play, Serie A Is The Most Competitive League In Europe

Barcelona stunned at Camp Nou by Hercules, Manchester United pegged back by two injury time Everton goals at Goodison Park, Bayern Munich and Manchester City held by Werder Bremen and Blackburn Rovers respectively, and Roma thumped 5-1 by provincial islanders Cagliari – all over Europe this weekend there were shocks galore for the big sides.

It was no different at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi as tiny little Cesena – in their first Serie A season for almost two decades – caused a sensation by toppling mighty Milan 2-0.

And it was fully deserved too.

From the first whistle, the Seahorses swarmed around the Rossoneri to steal possession and launch lightning fast counter-attacks. The physical Erjon Bogdani flanked by wingers Ezequiel Schelotto and Emanuele Giaccherini were a constant thorn in Massimiliano Allegri’s side. Giaccherini, in particular, is already looking like the revelation of this new Serie A season. Having sent Roma’s Marco Cassetti dizzy in week one, the 25-year-old who “was only watching Zlatan Ibrahimovic on television” in Serie C up until two years ago ran rings around the likes of Daniele Bonera, Luca Antonini, Sokratis and Ignazio Abate, creating the first for Bogdani and firing home the second.

There were huge expectations for Milan coming into this game following not only the 4-0 thrashing of another newly-promoted side Lecce a fortnight ago but more importantly the superstar signings of Ibrahimovic and Robinho. Both made their debuts – Robinho from the bench in the second half – but it wasn’t a pleasant baptism. The Brazilian barely touched the ball, while Ibra hit the post with a penalty late on. Fellow members of the so-called ‘Fab Four’ – Ronaldinho and Pato – also struggled against a superbly-organised Cesena defence who gave nothing away and were tactically perfect. Only another replacement Pippo Inzaghi, who won the penalty, was on top form.

There is no need for Milan to panic – they are still undoubted Scudetto material – but there are some lessons to learn. Most importantly, fielding Gennaro Gattuso is suicidal. There can be no reason, other than favouritism, for why he still dons the Milan shirt. The 32-year-old has been ‘finished’ for at least two years now, and is simply not good enough for this level anymore. Ringhio can’t pass, can’t shoot, is tactically suspect, and is so slow that by time he dives in for a tackle the ball is already in Milan’s net. The Diavolo lost the midfield battle on Saturday night because of 2006 legend Gattuso, and after he was substituted Cesena didn’t escape out of their half. Allegri must prove he is tough and turn to Gattuso only as a very last resort.

In defence, just like last season, Milan look like conceding when either Alessandro Nesta or Thiago Silva isn’t playing. Nesta missed the Cesena clash, while Silva limped off at half time. Mario Yepes will be a good alternative if he matches his Chievo levels of the last two years, but that is questionable seeing as he turns 35 in January. The others who did feature at the weekend were wildly exposed. Milan will score a hell of a lot of goals this season - Ibrahimovic’s hold-up play is second to none, and he will do so much damage up-front along with the three Brazilians - but the Scudetto-hopefuls received a good wake-up call in Emilia-Romagna.

Unlike the Premier League where anyone below the European places are often crushed 6-0 by Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, there are no easy games in Italy. Only the Bundesliga can get even close to matching Serie A for competitiveness throughout the league. Indeed, things are so tight this season that many critics believe that 70 points may be enough to win the Scudetto.

Luciano Moggi spricht nach dem 2ten Spieltag über Milan, Juventus und Inter. Imho alles richtig was er sagt, den hätte ich gern bei uns an Bord.

In Bezug auf Milan hat er mMn nur bedingt recht, denn ein Top-Ersatzmann für die Offensive war nötig, allerdings wäre ein weiterer Topmann für die Abwehr nicht schlecht gewesen.

Mir persönlich unerklärlich, dass man es nicht schafft Flamini dazu zu bringen die RV-Position auszufüllen. Dann hätten wir da auch keine Probleme mehr.

War mMn seine beste Zeit bei uns als er den RV geben musste.

Fürs MF hingegen ist er offensiv nicht gut genug, da ist er nur die 1b-Variante. (Einzig bei einem 2er MF wäre er wohl gesetzt.)

Von daher bitte ihn auf dieser Position integrieren, da könnte er Weltklasse werden...

Das Motta kein Offensivverteidiger ist, und viel nach vorne bewegt, hat man zwar gewusst, doch wenn man seine "Stärken" in der Defensive hat, dann darf da nichts anbrennen

So nebenbei erwähnt wurde Motta von Ranieri aussortiert, weil er ihn für zu schwach in der Defensive befunden hat. Nach vorne hatte er nämlich bei der Roma recht gute Ansätze.

Nur um das mal festzuhalten.

Kommt es mir nur so vor oder ist in den letzten Jahren die Dichte an guten oder gar Weltklasse-AVs zurückgegangen?

Alleine wenn man sich in Italien umsieht wird einem Angst und Bange, da ist kaum wer überdurchschnittlich oder gar Weltklasse... Mir persönlich fiele eigentlich nur Maicon ein.

Aber auch in anderen Ligen sind die Top-AVs Mangelware...

Ich persönlich wüsste jetzt kein Team, dass über zwei Weltklasse-AV verfügt.

Wenn ich da an die Seie A von vor etwa 5-6 Jahren zurückdenke, da gabs alleine bei Milan 3 Weltklasse-AVs....

Kann schon sein, doch Ranieri hat andere Ansichtsweisen.

Ich habe Motta natürlich alle anderen Neuverpflichtungen intensiv beobachtet über die Vorbereitung, und war auch in Graz. Motta ist mMn defensiv stärker als offensiv, doch gegen wendige Gegenspieler (alla Cassano) hat er seine Probleme, weil einfach zu schwerfällig. Motta schlägt zwar ganz brauchbare Flanke, also im Vergleich zum Vorjahr Caceres, doch erst wenn er den Ball vorne zugespielt bekommt, den aus technischen Mängel, kann man mit ihm kein konstruktives Kombinationsspiel nach vorne realisieren, da wiederum war Caceres stärker. Alles zusammen macht das aber nicht soviel aus, da wir mit Krasic eh einen sehr sehr offensiven rechten Flügel haben, also braucht Motta vorranig einmal "nur" die Seite zumachen, und das war beim 0:1 absolut nicht der Fall, agierte viel zu passiv.
