Youngster Morais joins

Chelsea has increased our Portuguese contingent ahead of the closing of the summer transfer window, this time from the younger end of the age spectrum.

Nuno Morais, a 20 year-old defender/midfielder has signed on a three-year contract. Previously he played in Portugal at second division club Penafiel.

Muss ein wahnsinniges Talent sein! Ich glaube auch, dass er am Anfang eher in der Reserve zum Einsatz kommen wird, aber vielleicht gelingt es ihm, sich für die erste Mannschaft zu empfehlen.

Ein Stürmer könnte sich im Laufe des Tages noch verabschieden: Nach übereinstimmenden Meldungen steht Adrian Mutu kurz vor einem Wechsel zu Fiorentina.

Ich bin nur gespannt, ob Abramovich noch nachbessern wird. Anbieten wird er es Mourinho mit Sicherheit, aber der Coach legt eben auf die Offensive keinen allzu großen Wert. Ihm ist es wichtiger, wenn die Null hinten steht.

Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu will be staying at Stamford Bridge, according to his agent.

The Romanian international had been linked with a move to Italian outfit Fiorentina for some time.

But Andrea Pretti, Mutu's agent, told BBC Sport: "Adrian is not leaving Chelsea, he will be staying for the next season. He is still happy there."

Mutu has fallen to fourth place in boss Jose Mourinho's line-up, following the signings of marksmen Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman.

The 25-year-old scored only ten goals for the Blues last season, after making a positive start following his £15.8million move from Parma.

Eines ist doch klar: Er hat das Zeug dazu, ein absoluter Topstar zu werden. Leider schöpft er sein Potential nicht annähernd aus. Wenn er sein Privatleben besser in den Griff bekommt, haben wir mit Adrian Mutu einen der besten Stürmer Europas in unseren Reihen.

A goal conceded in the final seconds cancelled out Michele Gallaccio’s poached first-half effort as a Chelsea reserve team containing a few big names had to settle for a point in the first home game of the season. 

First team squad members Celestine Babayaro, Scott Parker and Robert Huth were all selected for the match at Aldershot which was also notable for the first sight in a Chelsea shirt of Nuno Morais, the 20 year-old from Portugal signed at the weekend.

In front of José Mourinho and all his coaching staff, the new arrival, who can also play in defence, filled the right side of a midfield diamond with Parker playing the anchor role. It was a quiet debut for Morais while Babayaro at left-back was rarely troubled defensively.

Parker meanwhile saw a lot of the ball in an early spell of sustained possession, the high point of which was a free-kick won, meaning only one thing – Huth striding forward. This time though, his well-struck effort flew comfortably over.

Chelsea continued to control the game without much penetration until the opener. It came on 21 minutes after a corner had been cleared. The ball was returned to the danger area where Danny Hollands headed it on to Danny Woodards whose shot was blocked. The ball rebounded to Gallaccio who performed the predator’s job, finishing from close in.

Just past the half-hour Chelsea were forced into a change, Filipe Oliveira losing the chance to put on a good show for his compatriot coach. He had been struggling with an injury for some minutes and was replaced by Philip Younghusband.

Ipswich, who rarely threatened, did improve towards the break, making the Chelsea penalty area on a couple of occasions. With the second, a swift move, the ball was actually poked past Lenny Pidgeley but without sufficient momentum to make the goal before being cleared.

It was a fairly comfortable ride until the closing minutes for the young Chelsea keeper, called up by England Under 21s on the morning of this game. After the final whistle he was collected by England staff and whisked off to their training camp.

Into the second-half there was a bad headed miss by Gallaccio after a towering header by Huth had found him in space and then 13 minutes from the end Chelsea put together the most flowing move of the game.

Morais played a good ball across field that was controlled well by Babayaro and laid sideways to Parker. Skipping past challenges into the area he shot but the keeper saved.

Then Gallaccio was put through by Hollands on the right but only found the side-netting with his drive when well-placed to hit the target. Chelsea were finding more space as Ipswich tired and soon after, Parker sent Younghusband through with a good ball but he too was wide with his effort.

It looked as if Chelsea would be settling for a single goal winning margin in the second game of the season but then came the stoppage time kick in the teeth.

Ipswich substitute Billy Clarke had only been on the pitch a few minutes when he reached the ball a fraction of a second before the previously impenetrable Robert Huth’s tackle. Clarke slammed the ball from the edge of the area past Pidgeley and into the top corner. It was a quality strike that denied Chelsea at the very death.

Gestern gab Claude Makelele bekannt, dass er nicht mehr für die französische Nationalmannschaft spielen werde. Der 31-jährige konzentriert sich nun voll auf die Premiere League.
