TRADES BY RECOVERY FOR LEAFS

With his arms leisurely crossed and wearing a confident look on his face yesterday, coach Paul Maurice practically guaranteed that his Maple Leafs will pull off a trio of significant deals to bolster their roster.

But before you get too excited, don't pencil in the names of Gary Roberts, Marco Sturm and Bill Guerin into the Toronto lineup quite yet. "We're in an unusual situation," Maurice said yesterday. "We are about to make three phenomenal trades in the next two months, ones that will allow us to add Darcy Tucker, Kyle Wellwood and, hopefully, Michael Peca, to the lineup."

Sure, Maurice was having a bit of fun at the expense of a reporter, who had just asked him if he expected his team to be active before the arrival of the trade deadline next Tuesday afternoon. But it wasn't all just a front, either.

In Maurice's mind, the potential returns of Tucker, Wellwood and Peca from their respective injuries is just like acquiring talent from other teams in a trade, especially since none of those key cogs have appeared in the lineup in the past seven weeks. Tucker seems to be the closest to returning. While he didn't participate in yesterday's workout at Lakeshore Lions Arena, the feisty winger did attempt to squeeze his healing left foot into a skate boot. Should all go well, Tucker, who accompanied the team on its three-game trip to Long Island, Philadelphia and Montreal, hopes to be back on the ice for practice tomorrow. He has played just one game since suffering minuscule fractures in the foot while blocking a shot against the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 26.

"I just want to get out there and see how it feels," said Tucker, who was wearing a plastic brace on the foot as he prepared to head to the airport to catch the team charter. "I've been able to do certain things in the gym with my shoes on. (Strength and conditioning coach) Matt Nichol has done a great job helping me build up the muscle I lost in the foot (during my inactivity). Welly, Michael and I just want to get back. I don't think the three of us care what capacity we fill when we return." The best-case scenario would see Tucker participate in game action within a week.

While Maurice would be more than satisfied if his roster remained intact after the deadline, general manager John Ferguson continues to explore trade options. With TSN.ca reporting that Sturm is closing in on a four-year pact with the Boston Bruins, there likely is one less alternative for Ferguson. "We'll pay value if a deal make sense," Ferguson said last night en route to Toronto from the GM's meetings in Naples, Fla. "But we don't want to overpay."

Ferguson is wary of trading away the future for short-term gains. To this point, the asking price remains high. "The teams who are attempting to move guys, feel they are asking fair value," he said. "I do not share that perception."

LEAFS KEEP PACE IN TIGHT PLAYOFF RACE

Philadelphia — Before their big showdown in Montreal against the Canadiens on Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs knew they had to take care of business against the lowly Philadelphia Flyers, a team that has performed so badly at home that it could set a record for futility for fewest wins at home in a season. The record for fewest wins at home in a season is six, set by the Washington Capitals 32 seasons ago. The Leafs 5-2 victory over the Flyers on Saturday evening, before an announced crowd of 19,277, has left Philly with only five wins at the Wachovia Center and 11 home games remaining on its docket.

Although it was far from an entertaining game, the Leafs managed to keep pace in the race for the final playoff positions in the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference. "The Montreal game is huge for us, but in order for it to be huge we had to win this game," said Toronto forward Alex Steen, who scored the Leafs only goal in the first period, his first in seven games.

The Leafs, who improved their road record to 18-10-4, remain in 10th spot with 69 points, one point behind the eighth-place New York Islanders. Like the Islanders, the ninth-place Habs also have 70 points after a 3-2 loss on Long Island on Saturday afternoon. Among their final 20 regular season games, the Leafs have three games remaining the Canadiens this season and one apiece with the Islanders and the seventh-place Carolina Hurricanes. The Stanley Cup champions have 71 points.

The other good news for the Leafs was that injured forward Darcy Tucker was back on skates for the first time in five weeks. He went for a 10-minute spin around the ice in the morning. If his injured left foot responds well tomorrow to his first day back on the ice, Tucker will increase the intensity on Monday when he is scheduled to return for another on-ice session. Tucker, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, also stated that he is optimistic he and the Leafs are close to agreeing on a new contract.

The Leafs were making their second visit to Philadelphia in 10 days. Just before the game on Feb. 15, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren shipped Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators. The Flyers were in disarray that night and dropped a 4-2 decision. After the Leafs-Flyers rematch on Saturday, Holmgren announced that he had traded away veteran defenceman Alexei Zhitnik to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for young blueliner Braydon Coburn. Zhitnik assisted on Simon Gagne's goal in the final minute of the game.

The Leafs enjoyed a 1-0 lead after the opening period and 3-1 after 40 minutes when O'Neill and Chad Kilger scored and Sami Kapanen counted for the Flyers. Toronto goalie Andrew Raycroft made a big right-pad stop on Gagne in the final minute of the second period to maintain the Leafs two-goal bulge.

O'Neill, who is five years removed from his career high of 41 goals, hit the 20-goal mark for the first time since the 2002-03 season. "Twenty goals is not what is expected of me in this league," O'Neill said. "Thirty-to-35 is what is expected of me."

Andy Wozniewski returned to the Leafs lineup after an almost five-month absence and played well, setting up captain Mats Sundin for a third-period goal. Wozniewski separated a shoulder that required surgery on Oct. 7 in the Leafs third game of the season against the Montreal Canadiens. Wozneiwski replaced injured Toronto defenceman Pavel Kubina, who fractured a finger while blocking a shot in the Leafs 3-2 shootout loss against the New York Islanders last Thursday and will miss at least two weeks. "It felt great to be back out there, taking shifts in the National Hockey League," he said. "I had some confidence in my game and this is what I expected."

Toronto's John Pohl completed the scoring for his club with 70 seconds remaining and then Gagne, with his 11th goal in 11 games, beat Raycroft in the final minute.

The Leafs finished the third-quarter of the season with an impressive 12-6-3 run.

Wichtiger Spieler

:aaarrrggghhh:
