Scotland are waiting on the fitness of Steven Pressley for the friendly with the Repblic of Ireland.

The Hearts skipper is struggling with a stomach bug and has been restricted to light training ahead of the Hampden Park clash.

Berti Vogts has already put Newcastle defender Steven Caldwell on stand-by as the Scots start life without former skipper Dominic Matteo, whose retirement from the international scene passed quietly compared to Roy Keane's.

Aberdeen's Russel Anderson and West Ham's Christian Dailly are other two members of Vogts' favoured three-man central defensive unit.

Das Terrier's other dilemma is in goal, where Dundee United's Paul Gallacher and Neil Sullivan are vying to take over from the injured Rab Douglas, despite neither of them featuring for their first teams of late.

In attack, Neil McCann and Paul Devlin are competing to partner Stevie Crawford in attack.

Andy O'Brien is likely to be drafted into defence for Brian Kerr's first game in charge of the Republic.

The Newcastle centre-back is the leading candidate to replace skipper Kenny Cunningham, who dropped out on Tuesday with a hamstring problem.
