ROBBIE SAVAGE claimed he was spat at by “Mad Dog” Emanuel Pogatetz.

The flashpoint overshadowed Blackburn’s win which booked a Carling Cup semi-final with Manchester United.

Angry Savage wiped his cheek and protested to ref Alan Wiley after coming face-to-face with Boro’s Austrian defender.

Pogatetz, nicknamed Mad Dog by his team-mates, escaped any punishment over the first-half incident and Wiley was confronted again by Savage at the interval.

However, the Rovers midfielder received little support from boss Mark Hughes, who said: “Pogatetz came up and shouted something and maybe something flew out of his mouth. We are not going to make an issue of it because we don’t want anything to overshadow a great win.”

Savage went on to make a major contribution to Blackburn’s win. And Hughes added: “He was excellent. It was arguably his best game since he came here.”

But Shefki Kuqi was Rovers’ star and he set up the winner for Paul Dickov in the 90th minute. Hughes said: “Shefki gives us a physical presence we didn’t have last year. I’m delighted for him because his work ethic is fantastic.”

Boro manager Steve McClaren said: “I’m very disappointed and very angry. We had a great opportunity and didn’t take it — we limped out of the cup.

“Give credit to Blackburn. They deserved their win and I was only surprised it took them so long to score.”

Road to Zion

ROBBIE SAVAGE has cleared Middlesbrough’s Emanuel Pogatetz in the spitting storm that overshadowed Blackburn’s Carling Cup win.

The duo clashed during Rovers’ 1-0 victory that secured a semi-final date with Manchester United.

It ended with Welsh ace Savage wiping his face and complaining bitterly to ref Alan Wiley he had been spat on.

Wiley took no action against Pogatetz, instead handing Savage his EIGHTH caution of the season for a challenge on Adam Johnson which led to the flashpoint.

Now the Rovers star has made it clear he accepts the Austrian defender, nicknamed Mad Dog, never intended to spit on him.

Savage, 31, said: “There was no way it was intentional. He came over shouting at me and I was caught by something from his mouth, but there was no way he intended it to happen.

“He apologised, I accepted and we shook hands.”
