Newcastle agree deal for Boumsong

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has confirmed that the club have reached a deal with Rangers to sign France international Jean-Alain Boumsong.

"Boumsong has an agreement with us and we have an agreement with Glasgow Rangers," said Souness on Friday.

The 25-year-old defender had his medical at St James' Park on Friday, which he passed without incident.

Boumsong will sign a five-and-a-half year deal and is expected to cost Newcastle a fee in the region of £8m.

Souness also confirmed that he had made an enquiry for Manchester City defender Sylvain Distin and had been to watch Marseille's Beye Habib as he looks to further boost his squad.

Boumsong's agent Willie McKay revealed that the agreement was reached on Friday morning.

"That's right. It was agreed this morning," said McKay on Friday. "Everything has been sorted out. "

Boumsong joined Rangers from Auxerre on a free transfer last summer but made just 28 appearances for the club.

Rangers boss Alex McLeish went to watch Newcastle's game against Arsenal at St James' Park on Wednesday but has opted against any player-plus-cash deal.

The Scottish club had earlier rejected two bids for the player, who made just 28 appearances for them.

The earliest Boumsong could make his debut for Newcastle would be 9 January, when Souness' team play Yeading in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, Newcastle confirmed on Thursday that Chelsea full-back Celestine Babayaro will become Souness' first transfer window signing on New Year's Day.

Babayaro - Boumsong - Distin - Carr

Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign Jean-Alain Boumsong after finally having an £8 million bid accepted by Rangers.

As revealed by skysports.com last August, Newcastle had made Boumsong their top target since Jonathan Woodgate left Tyneside for Real Madrid

The Magpies have made three bids for the Frenchman as they look to solve their defensive problems.

St James' Park boss Graeme Souness issued his old club an ultimatum earlier this week insisting he would not be increasing his £8 million offer and Rangers have now decided to cash-in on the player.

Boumsong has successfully undergone a medical and only personal terms need to be agreed for the move to be sealed.

It now looks increasingly likely that Souness has got his man and that Boumsong will join Newcastle when the transfer window reopens in January.

"I can confirm that we have an agreement with Glasgow Rangers and an agreement with the player, and the agreement we have with him is a five-and-a-half-year deal," said Souness.

"Jean-Alain Boumsong has an agreement with us, we have an agreement with Glasgow Rangers.

The player's agent Willie McKay revealed Boumsong was on Tyneside discussing personal terms.

"We are here now in Newcastle to discuss terms and for the player to undergo a medical," McKay told skysports.com

"Rangers have accepted the £8 million bid for Jean Alain and there is a five-and-a-half year deal on the table.

"Jean-Alain is looking forward to playing in The Premiership after an enjoyable time at Rangers and the deal should be completed soon."

Boumsong is in line to make his debut in The FA Cup tie with Yeading if the deal is sealed when the transfer window reopens.

Newcastle contract rebel Olivier Bernard has admitted he still hopes to stay at St James' Park.

Bernard has already rejected offers to extend his deal at Newcastle, with his present contract due to expire at the end of the season.

The Frenchman is believed to be a target for Middlesbrough and Juventus and he could leave Newcastle on a free transfer in the summer.

The imminent arrival for Celestine Babayaro from Chelsea has cast further doubt over Bernard's long-term future on Tyneside.

However, Bernard is hoping he can come to an agreement with Newcastle over extending his stay at the club.

"I know some clubs are attracted to me, but me I want to carry on at Newcastle," said Bernard.

"Now I have to know if the technical staff and the chairman still want me."
