D Pavel Kubina wird aller Voraussicht nach am Donnerstag gegen die Bruins sein Comeback feiern. Auch Staffan Kronwall dürfte recht bald wieder fit sein.

Leafs showing signs of resiliency

The problem for both a young team and a team learning a new style of play is its inconsistency. One night, the team functions as 20 disparate entities, with none moving in the right direction. On another, the team clicks into place and rolls over the opposition. The quality of the opposition does not appear to matter. The team can just as easily fold in front of an inferior opponent as dominate a stronger one.

At this point, the Toronto Maple Leafs are such a team. Last week, they were simply awful in losing to a mediocre team, the Florida Panthers. After that, there was no reason to think the Leafs would be anything but cannon fodder in Buffalo on Saturday for the speedy Sabres, who had yet to lose a National Hockey League game in regulation time this season and who enjoyed a 17-4-3 record over the Leafs at the HSBC Arena since it was built 10 years ago.

This was the Leafs' finest outing of the young season. Every part of their game was in sync: their young players were not making mistakes despite the Sabres' speed, their penalty killing and power play were humming, their 5-on-5 play more than adequate and their best player, Mats Sundin, was outstanding. For the first time in recent memory, the Leafs embarrassed the Sabres in their own arena, taking a 4-1 win.

"We played extremely hard and did all the little things in the game that you guys don't really talk about in the paper," Leafs winger Darcy Tucker told a couple of reporters after the game. "We did all those small things, we blocked shots, we were good on the penalty kill, okay on our power play, 5-on-5, and our fore-check was good."

This is not the first time this season the Maple Leafs have confounded their fans in this manner. On Oct. 26, the Leafs were humiliated, 7-2, by the Senators in Ottawa. Two nights later, they went into Montreal and outplayed the Canadiens badly, taking a 5-4 shootout win. But that sort of thing is encouraging in itself. It shows a coach his team has resiliency, that his young players are not letting mistakes prey on their psyches and the veterans are not throwing in the towel.

"I still think that Montreal game might be the most important game of the season," head coach Paul Maurice said. "Maybe not the most satisfying, but I think we dominated that team on their home ice and got back to a game that we can sell in the locker room: 'This is what happens when we do these things right.' That was a big game for us."

So, too, was the Buffalo game. It told the young Leafs they can play with the best in the league and it helped deflate the myth of the Sabres' speed. One of the reasons for that was Sundin. He, like most of the players on last week's Florida trip, was working hard for the most part, but was not getting results. But he kept working, and on Saturday he was the dominant presence on the ice, with two goals and an assist.

"Was he ever good," Maurice said. "I could hear him talking in the dressing room and he's saying all the things that you're hoping your players are thinking about before the game. And then he goes out and shows it."

The problem is, the Leafs could very well show up at the Air Canada Centre and serve up a stinker tonight against one of the worst teams in the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers. With each passing big win, the team hopes it is over the hump, but at this point, it is too early to tell. Maurice believes this is due more to the team as a whole learning to play an up-tempo game than his young players finding their way. "I don't think we're looking at the young guys, saying if we weren't so young, we'd be winning more," he said. "There's a major adjustment that's still going on. It's still going to take some time."

One thing that will likely help tonight is getting Pavel Kubina back into the lineup. He proved in his three games with the Leafs before getting hurt that he is a stabilizing influence on the defence. He is hoping to return tonight from a knee injury. An indication the Leafs think he might be back was the demotion of forward Ben Ondrus to the Toronto Marlies farm team, which clears a roster spot.

Gestern das erste Drittel angeschaut, also was Nittymaki gehalten hat bzw. die Leafs vergeben haben, das grenzte ja schon an Wahnsinn. Normal hätte es minimum schon 3-0 stehen müssen/können. Unglaublich wie mies die Flyers heuer sind, sicher ein Kandidat für den letzten Platz im Osten.

Andy Raycroft wurde von der NHL zum Second Star Of The Week gewählt, mit einer Bilanz von 3-0-0 und 1,67 GAA gegen Atlanta, Tampa Bay und Buffalo.

Auch der Sieg gegen die Flyers geht laut Berichten vor allem auf seine Kappe (erstes Drittel waren die Leafs turmhoch überlegen, danach spielte vor allem Philly). Scheint so, als wäre Razor auf dem Weg zurück zu der Form, die ihm 2003/04 die Calder Trophy als Rookie Of The Year bescherte. Way to go!

Sundin out 3-4 weeks; won't need surgery

TORONTO -- Mats Sundin may be out of the Toronto lineup for 3-4 weeks, thanks to a slight ligament tear in his elbow, according to several Web reports in Canada. TSN reports that Sundin is undergoing treatment for the injury, which may have occurred when he was hit in the first period against Philadelphia. He finished the game. Sportsnet.ca is calling the injury a partial tear in the ligaments in the right elbow. Sundin will not need surgery, according to the TSN report. Sundin leads Toronto in points with 19 this season. He has eight goals and 11 assists.

Jup. Wobei es, ganz im Sinne der Tante Jolesch, noch ein Glück ist, daß es gerade jetzt passiert ist, da die Leafs in nächster Zeit eher weniger Spiele haben. Sollte The Nordic God wirklich 3 Wochen ausfallen, versäumt er nur 8 Spiele.

Er ist allerdings als fast healer bekannt, also vielleicht geht es eh schneller.

Sehr beeindruckend ja die 19 Saves von Raycroft im ersten Drittel. Gerade ist das 2-5 gefallen, sollte trotzdem nicht mehr besonders spannend werden. Hoffentlich.

Muß ein gutes Gefühl für Razor sein, daß sein Gegenüber Tim Thomas, der ihm letztes Jahr vorgezogen wurde, nach einem Drittel bereits Feierabend hatte, und er stand mit 19 Saves da
