Lichtgestalt what's the chapel of mine Geschrieben 4. Dezember 2005 QUINNS BIG CREW PROVING STRANGELY FRAGILE A colossus. A straw shack on a windy day. Those are your Maple Leafs, 5-4 losers last night to the San Jose Sharks in a contest that featured a kaleidoscope of moments: excellence and error, confidence and timidity. Let's start with ineffective special teams. The Leafs surrendered a goal with San Jose enjoying a two-man advantage, a single-man advantage and even when the Sharks were down a man. That's not the kind of thorough job on special teams Leafs coach Pat Quinn had in mind. Ed Belfour was unable to deliver the critical save. Don't forget an inexcusable loss of composure after skating to a 3-1 lead. As well, take note of a lousy night in the faceoff circle. The Leafs lost the majority of draws in all three zones. So while it's tempting to say the Leafs' downfall came about because of a second period lapse, the case is a bit less flattering. The storyline was simple enough. The Leafs, fresh off a 4-0 win in Atlanta, entered the game playing some of their best hockey of the season. Their defence had been airtight. Their goaltending had been sharp, but they were playing their third game in four nights. The Sharks, buoyed by their own larceny in landing Joe Thornton from the Bruins, were still a losing proposition. But they grabbed a 1-0 lead on a unimpeded goal from Scott Hannan. The Leafs quickly poured three past journeyman San Jose goalie Vesa Toskala on goals from Darcy Tucker, Eric Lindros, with his 11th, and Matt Stajan. The Leafs were dominant. They outshot San Jose 12-4 and you figured things looked rosy for the locals. Problem is, so did the locals. "We only gave up three shots (four actually) in the first period, but for some reason we got away from it in the second period," Tucker said. "We gave them too many goals that were easy ones." In less than seven minutes, the Sharks fired three pucks past Leafs goalie Ed Belfour. Patrick Marleau, former Leaf Alyn McCauley and Mark Smith were left on their own. "You could tell they were buzzing a little bit," Leafs defenceman Ken Klee said. "Before we got a handle on it, unfortunately, we were behind." Belfour blamed himself. "They came back and started working harder and when they got their chances, they put them away," he said. "I didn't come up with the saves." Not many could. McCauley would add another late in the third. The Leafs rallied with Jason Allison's sixth goal with 2:49 left but it was no soap. "It's disappointing," Tucker said. "We played really well in Atlanta and really well in the first period." And then they stopped. One step forward, one back. You know, the Maple Leafs are 15-10-3 and all that could go right has gone right. Aside from the injury to Mats Sundin that cost them their captain's services for 12 games, the club has been blessedly free of injury. High-risk acquisitions Eric Lindros and Allison have each played all 27 games. Lindros has been very good. Come to think of it, so has Allison. Still, the Leafs demonstrated last night that while they are big and strong, they are strangely fragile. When they don't defend, no amount of virtues on offence can save them. Same for when Belfour doesn't save them or when the power play, the league's best for a while, misfires. They are fun to watch, but are imminently fallible. -> Toronto Sun 0 Diesen Beitrag teilen Link zum Beitrag Auf anderen Seiten teilen
